Three different things get sold under one word, and most confusion about price starts there. A service wash is your everyday washing done by weight: sorted, washed, dried and folded, priced per kilo with a minimum load. Ironing is a separate job priced by the item or by the hour, and a bag of shirts weighs almost nothing while taking a long time. Linen rotation is a third thing again, a set count of sheets and towels cycled for a let or an HMO rather than a household's clothes.
This sits alongside two services rather than replacing them. Ironing done in your home during a domestic cleaning visit is charged by the hour as an extra on that booking, and linen for short lets is handled inside the changeover. This page is the collection service: bags picked up, washed off site, returned on a set day. It is a domestic scale operation, not a commercial laundry. There is no dry cleaning plant, no industrial washer and no shop counter, so anything needing those is named and sent to a specialist instead.
What is included
Service wash, charged by weight
- Bags weighed at collection, with the weight and the price confirmed before anything is washed
- Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
- Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
- Non-bio and fragrance-free detergent on request, at no extra cost
- Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
- Folded and bagged by person or by room if you tell us how the house works
- An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection
Ironing
- Priced per item or per hour, whichever is cheaper for what you actually have
- Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
- Bed linen and duvet covers, slow work and priced separately from clothes
- Returned on hangers under a cover, or folded flat, whichever you ask for
- Steam on the reverse of anything that shines, and a pressing cloth on wool
- Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
Linen, towels and household items
- Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
- Towels washed hot and kept separate from clothing
- Duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases washed and either pressed or folded flat
- Pillows and single duvets where the drum size genuinely allows it, said plainly at booking
- School uniform on a fixed weekly slot through term time
- Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out
What is not included
- Dry clean only labels, and garments with no label left in them at all
- Suits, tailoring, structured jackets and anything with fused interlining
- Silk, cashmere, unlined wool and hand wash only knitwear
- Items with a broken zip, a loose button, unsecured trim or an existing tear
- Heavily soiled workwear carrying oil, solvent, paint or biological contamination
- King and super king duvets, and feather duvets of any size
Every one of those is refused rather than risked. A dry clean only label means the garment has never been tested in water, and a service wash is not the place to find out. A broken zip becomes a torn sleeve at 1,200 revolutions a minute. A king duvet in a domestic drum comes out wet in the middle, because it never moved. Named at booking, these go to a dry cleaner or a launderette with the right machine.
How long it takes
| Property | Our team | On your own |
|---|---|---|
| Standard weekly bag, 6 to 8kg | Collected one day, returned the next | One machine load, then most of a day of drying and folding |
| The same bag with ironing | 48 hours, sometimes 72 in a busy week | That day again, plus an evening at the board |
| Ironing only, 20 to 25 items | Next day | An evening, and longer if most of them are shirts |
| Bed linen set for a let | 24 hours, or same day if it goes in first thing | A full cycle per set, which ties up the machine on a changeover day |
| Same-day turnaround | Needs a morning collection and a machine slot held for it | Only if you are home to move it between machine and line |
The right-hand column is hands-on time plus drying rather than elapsed time, since a machine runs without you. Turnaround is drying, not washing. Same day is possible on a small load collected before nine, and it is not possible on eight kilos of towels.
What laundry & ironing costs in Nottingham
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Nottingham. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
How a laundry round runs
A fixed slot, not a phone call
The round works because the same streets are done on the same day. A weekly slot means your bag goes whether you remembered to book it or not, and it costs less than ad hoc because the van is already on the street. Ad hoc collections are possible, and they are the first thing squeezed when a week goes wrong.
Counted in, at the door
Items onto a sheet, a copy each, and anything already stained, bobbled, holed or missing a button written down before it leaves. Thirty seconds at the door removes the entire class of argument that begins with the words it was fine when I gave it to you.
Sorted at the machine, not in your hall
Whites, lights, darks and towels separated, zips done up, pockets emptied, anything inside out turned back. New and strongly dyed items run on their own for the first two or three washes, which is when they give up most of their loose dye.
Care labels set the temperature
Not one temperature for everything. Forty degrees for most cottons, thirty for synthetics and anything printed, sixty for towels, bedding and workwear where hygiene is the point of the wash. Wash separately means washed separately. Do not tumble means it does not go in the dryer, whatever that costs in time.
Stains treated before the wash, never after
Pre-treated, left to work, washed, then checked while still wet and treated again if it survived. Once a stain has been through a dryer the heat has set it, and at that point there is usually nothing honest left to offer.
Returned hung or folded, your choice
Shirts and anything that creases come back on hangers under a cover, which is why a hanging return needs somewhere to put them. Everything else is folded and bagged, by person or by room if you tell us how the house runs. The count sheet comes back with it.
When to book it
Book the weekly slot at the start of a term, a job or a tenancy rather than in the week it becomes urgent, because a fixed day only works if it is genuinely fixed. School uniform and workwear are the two patterns that suit it best: both are needed on the same day every week, and both are ruined by being remembered on a Sunday night. For a let, agree the linen rotation before the first booking rather than after the first gap.
Whoever turns up is directly employed by us, DBS-checked and reference-verified, which is not the same arrangement as most companies quoting against this. More on how we work on the about page, and the common pre-booking questions are on the FAQ page.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it
The mistakes below account for most of the disappointment in this kind of work, ours included. Several of them will save you money whether you hire us or not.
Bagging everything together and expecting it back together
Sorting is part of the job, so one bag is fine. What is not fine is one bag holding the school uniform you need on Monday, a new red jumper and the spare bed set, in a week when the round is full. Split what you need back quickly from what can wait, and say which is which.
Sending something that has already been dried
This is the one that cannot be undone. A stain that has been through a hot wash and a tumble dryer is set, and no service wash will lift it afterwards. If a home attempt fails, stop at the wet stage and send it wet in a separate bag rather than drying it and hoping somebody else can fix it.
Cutting the care label out
People remove them because they itch, and then nobody knows what the garment is. With no label the safe assumption is the most cautious one, which usually means cool, slow and no dryer, and that is not what you wanted for a work shirt. Unpick the label from the seam and keep it, or photograph it before it goes.
Comparing a per kilo price with a per item price
A bag of shirts weighs two kilos and takes two hours to iron. A bag of towels weighs eight kilos and takes twenty minutes of handling. Per kilo is the right unit for a service wash and the wrong one for ironing, which is why the same laundry quotes both. Compare like with like, or the cheaper quote is just the one measuring the wrong thing.

Amazing service. They went over and beyond my expectations.
Punctual, thoroughly trustworthy, and respectful of client spaces.
Thanks for the professionalism in your Services. Nice job.
What happens if you lose or damage something?
Everything is counted at collection onto a sheet, you keep a copy, and anything already stained, holed or missing a button is written down before it leaves the house. The same sheet is counted back at return. That procedure is the answer rather than a promise: a missing item is traceable to a load and a date, and the sheet shows whether damage was recorded going in. Ask any laundry service for their procedure and their insurance in writing before you hand over a bag.
Can you get this stain out?
Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on what has already happened to it. A fresh stain treated before it is washed usually comes out. A stain that has been through a hot wash and a tumble dryer is normally permanent, because heat sets protein and dye into the fibre. Point stains out at collection rather than hoping they get noticed, and say what caused them, because blood, wine and cooking oil each need a different treatment.
Do I need to sort it before it is collected?
No, but tell us if anything must not go in with the rest. Bagging everything together is the normal case and sorting is part of the job: whites, lights, darks and towels get separated at the machine. What sorting cannot rescue is a new red item, a full set of bedding and the school uniform in one bag on a week you need all three back quickly. Two bags and a note solve that.
Can you use a detergent that suits sensitive skin?
Yes. Non-bio and fragrance-free are both standard options and neither costs more. Non-bio leaves out the enzymes some people react to, and fragrance-free leaves out the perfume, which is the more common trigger of the two. If someone in the house has eczema, say so at booking, because it also means an extra rinse and no fabric conditioner, and conditioner is usually the thing causing the problem.
Do you take duvets?
Single duvets and pillows sometimes, depending on the filling and whether they move freely in the drum. Doubles, kings and feather duvets go to a launderette or a commercial laundry, and we will say so rather than take the money. A duvet needs room to tumble, or the middle never gets properly wet and never gets properly dry, which is how they come back smelling worse than they went in.
