Mattress cleaning is the bed treated as its own job. Our carpet and upholstery service already cleans a mattress as an add-on while the machine is in the house for the floors: a HEPA vacuum and low moisture spot treatment, half an hour, charged as an extra line. This page is the standalone visit, priced by bed size, where the mattress is the reason we are there. That means both sides, every seam, the divan base, the headboard and the gap behind the bed, and enough time to dry it properly before we go.

The other difference is what you are cleaning off. A carpet holds tracked-in grit and oily soil from shoes. A mattress holds what a body leaves in it: perspiration, sebum, skin, and the body fluids that are the usual reason anyone books a mattress clean. Sweat carries mineral salts, which is why the marks are yellow-brown, ring-shaped and spread outward from the middle rather than sitting on top. Salts and set protein do not respond to the pressure that works on a carpet, and a mattress cannot be lifted out and aired the way a rug can, so the whole method is built around moisture and drying instead.

What is included

The mattress itself

  • Label and construction checked before anything is applied
  • Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
  • HEPA vacuum over both faces, the sides, seams, piping and handles
  • Pre-treatment matched to the soiling, with proper dwell time
  • Low moisture agitation, with extraction only where the soiling justifies it
  • More dry passes than wet ones, so less water goes in than a carpet would take
  • Air movement across the surface before we leave

Stains and odour

  • Cold treatment for protein: blood, sweat, milk and vomit
  • Enzymatic pre-treatment for urine, which breaks down the uric acid crystals a detergent leaves behind
  • Mineral tidemarks from perspiration treated separately from the body oils beside them
  • Bicarbonate deodorising where the smell sits in the surface
  • Odour traced to its source, because a fragrance laid over a urine mark comes back in the first humid week
  • An honest verdict on what will lighten rather than clear, given before we start rather than after

The rest of the bed

  • Divan base sides and top platform vacuumed and spot cleaned
  • Fabric headboard cleaned to the same standard as the mattress
  • Ottoman and drawer interiors cleared of dust and debris
  • The gap behind and under the bed, which nothing reaches once the frame is in place
  • Skirting and the wall line behind the headboard
  • Protector or topper handled, washed or refitted as the label allows

What is not included

  • Bed bugs, fleas or any other infestation, which is pest control work for a licensed contractor and not a cleaning job
  • Deep-set yellowing and old body fluid tidemarks, which usually lighten rather than disappear
  • Mould inside a mattress that has already been soaked, which cannot be reached and is a replacement decision
  • Bleach marks, dye transfer and sun fading, which are damage to the fibre rather than soil on it
  • Wet cleaning of anything the manufacturer marks spot clean or dry clean only, which covers most memory foam
  • Duvets, pillows and feather items, which need a launderer with a machine large enough for them
  • Repair: torn covers, failed zips, collapsed foam and sagging all stay as they are

We give you the verdict before starting, not after. Old body fluid marks and sweat tidemarks are mineral and protein deposits that have been setting for years, and on most mattresses they lighten rather than disappear. If that is not worth the money to you, say so and we will not take the booking. A protector fitted afterwards is what stops the next round.

How long it takes

PropertyOur teamOn your own
Single mattress30 to 45 minutes1 to 2 hours, then a bed you cannot use that night
Double, king or super king45 to 75 minutes2 to 3 hours, then a bed you cannot use that night
Set stain or urine treatment, per areaAdd 20 to 30 minutesNot one to attempt: heat and hire machines set it permanently
Divan base and headboard20 to 30 minutes1 hour with a domestic vacuum and an upholstery tool
Two beds in one visit1.5 to 2.5 hoursA weekend, with both beds out of use overnight

The third column is a hired supermarket machine. The cleaning is the quick part either way; the cost is the drying, because a hire machine puts down more water than it recovers and a mattress cannot be lifted and aired. Four to eight hours ventilated is normal, longer for memory foam.

What mattress cleaning costs in Nottingham

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Nottingham. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

How a mattress clean runs

Construction before chemistry

Sprung, memory foam, latex and hybrid all take different amounts of moisture, and the label tells you which. Foam takes the least. A one-sided mattress is cleaned on one side and stays that way. If the cover unzips and is machine washable, that is a wash rather than a clean, and it costs you nothing to be told so before you pay for a visit.

Dry work first, and most of it

A HEPA vacuum over both faces, the sides, the piping, the handles, the seams where debris collects, and the platform underneath. Most of what leaves a mattress leaves dry. Anything taken out with a vacuum is not something that has to be dissolved and then pulled back up through the surface with water.

Treat the stain you have, not the stain it looks like

Protein gets cold water and no heat. Urine gets an enzymatic pre-treatment with real dwell time, because uric acid crystals are what an ordinary detergent leaves behind and what smells again in humid weather. Sweat tidemarks are mineral and need different chemistry from the body oils sitting alongside them.

Low moisture as the default

The wand is set light and dry passes outnumber wet ones. Over-wetting is the classic way to ruin a mattress, and it happens because the operator is chasing a stain that lives deeper than the cleaning reaches. We would rather leave a mark lighter than push water into filling that has no way of giving it back.

Air movement, then a check by hand

An air mover runs across the surface while we do the base and the headboard, then the windows go open. Four to eight hours in a ventilated room is normal. We tell you when it is safe to make the bed up rather than leaving you to guess, and if a protector is going on, it goes on dry.

When to book it

Every six to twelve months if anyone in the house sweats heavily, has young children or lets a pet on the bed, otherwise every one to two years. Book it in the morning so the bed has daylight hours to dry, and in warmer months when a window can stay open. If you are having carpets done as well, book both on the same visit: a mattress added to a carpet job avoids a second minimum call-out, which is usually £60 to £90.

Whoever turns up is directly employed by us, DBS-checked and reference-verified, which is not the same arrangement as most companies quoting against this. More on how we work on the about page, and the common pre-booking questions are on the FAQ page.

Where we do this

Mattress Cleaning runs across all 69 areas we cover, at the same price with no travel supplement. Each link goes to what this job involves in that particular place.

If you want everything we do in one place rather than this service on its own, the area pages cover that: Arnold, Aspley, Attenborough, Bakersfield and every other area. The services hub compares this service against the other 13.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

The mistakes below account for most of the disappointment in this kind of work, ours included. Several of them will save you money whether you hire us or not.

Hiring a machine and soaking it

The classic failure, and the one that turns a stained mattress into a ruined one. A carpet machine puts down more water than a mattress can give back, the filling holds it for days, and what grows in the middle cannot be reached, dried out or cleaned. Brown watermarks wicking to the surface a week later are the visible half of the problem.

Putting heat on a protein stain

Blood, sweat, milk and vomit are protein, and heat sets protein permanently. Cold water only, blotted from the outside inward with a white cloth so you can see what is transferring. Steaming a urine mark before an enzyme has broken down the uric acid does the same thing to the smell, and locks it in for good.

Making the bed up the same evening

Four to eight hours of drying is not a suggestion. Sheets and a duvet on a damp mattress seal the moisture in and undo the whole job, and a body on top adds heat and more moisture to it. If we finish at four in the afternoon, that bed is for the following night. Plan a sofa or a spare room before we arrive.

Calling a cleaner about bites

Bites, small dark spots along the seam and a sweet musty smell are pest signs, not cleaning ones. A cleaning visit will not treat them, and moving the mattress can spread the problem through the house. Ring a pest control contractor first, and ask what qualification they hold for the products they intend to use.

Questions

Mattress CleaningQuestions

Anything not covered here, ring us on 07438 843980.

Will old stains come out?

Usually they lighten rather than disappear, and we will tell you which is which before starting. Fresh spills respond well. A yellow-brown ring that has been there for years is sweat salts and set protein that have migrated down into the filling, and cleaning reaches the top layer, not the depth. Anyone promising an old mattress will look new has not seen it yet.

Is it steam cleaned, and how wet does it get?

No steam, and as little water as the job allows. Hot water extraction is the right tool for a carpet, because a carpet sits on a floor and can be dried from above and below. A mattress cannot be lifted, turned on its edge and aired, so water that goes in has to come back out through the same surface. We work low moisture, with more dry passes than wet ones.

Does it help with dust mites and allergens?

We can tell you what is physically removed, which is skin, dust, hair and the mite debris held in the top layer and the seams, taken out through a HEPA filter rather than blown back into the room. We make no health claims beyond that. If allergen is the reason you are asking, weekly bedding washes at 60 degrees and a barrier encasement do more than any cleaning visit.

Can you deal with bed bugs?

No, and neither can any cleaning company. Bed bugs are a pest infestation and need a pest control contractor qualified to use the products involved, so look for a British Pest Control Association member. Cleaning an infested bed can spread the problem into other rooms, so we will decline the booking and tell you why. Treat the infestation first, then book a clean afterwards if you still want one.

What about memory foam and toppers?

Memory foam tolerates far less moisture than a sprung mattress, because the foam is a closed cell structure that holds water in the middle where no airflow reaches. Many foam covers are fixed rather than removable, and marked spot clean only. We vacuum, spot treat and dry it, and we do not extract it. Toppers get the same treatment, and a washable one is usually better off in the machine.
