Mattress Cleaning for Strelley homes

Cottage staircases box round a winder with a door at the bottom, so nothing is carried out to be cleaned. Beds here sit on slatted wooden frames rather than divans, and the underside shows it in bands.

The staircase decides the method here, and the two halves of the area give different answers. A cottage stair boxes round a tight winder with a door at the foot of it, and a modern double has rarely come up it flat, so nothing is going back down for the sake of being cleaned. The bed is worked where it stands, one face at a time, turned in place rather than carried out onto a landing not wide enough to hold it. The estate is easier at the front of the house and no better at the back, since the second bedroom on these semis takes a bed and very little else. Where the newer housing has given somebody room to walk round three sides of a bed we say so, because it is quicker and it dries better.

Strelley sits in NG8, under Nottingham City Council. Two settlements with a dual carriageway between them. The estate side is uniform, with modern fittings and predictable rooms. Over the A6002 the village is a conservation area of listed cottages, a hall and a church, where the products get agreed before anyone starts rather than chosen on the day.

What we run into on Strelley mattress cleaning jobs

Beds in the older cottages sit on wooden or iron bedsteads with slats rather than on a divan, and you can read that off the underside of the mattress before anybody mentions it. The cover carries alternating bands: a clean strip where a slat pressed against it and a darker one across each gap, because the gap is where air and dust moved and the slat is where nothing did. On a bed that has not been turned in years those bands have set into the ticking instead of lying on it. They lighten and they do not clear, and that is the verdict you get before we start rather than afterwards.

How a Strelley mattress cleaning job actually runs

Two things want settling before we arrive. The first is the room. We work down both sides of the bed and along the foot of it, so a bedroom holding a bed, two wardrobes and a chest needs half an hour of somebody's evening beforehand rather than ten minutes of ours on the day. The second is power, which sounds trivial and is not. The air mover runs for as long as the drying takes, and in the cottages there is often a single socket in a bedroom with the bedside lamp already in it, so we would rather know in advance and bring an extension than unplug something of yours. On the village lane the van stands wherever it can without blocking the road and the equipment comes in by hand, so tell us which door to use and whether the stair has a door at the bottom that needs propping open. Nothing is taken away and nothing is left wet. We do not remove old mattresses either, though a clearance is a separate booking if that is where this ends up.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly postwar city estate semis and short terraces along Strelley Road and Flamsteed Road, newer housing around Princess Boulevard, and a small group of listed brick and clay tile cottages in the village itself, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Strelley on the same round as Bilborough, Aspley and Wollaton.

What we check on every Strelley job

The other job we get called to here comes from landlords, and it usually involves a mattress that has been stored rather than slept on. A bed stood on its edge in one of the garages behind the terraces between tenancies is standing on cold concrete against a brick wall in an unheated, unventilated building, and it comes back with a grey speckling up the face that was against the wall and a smell that only arrives once the room warms up. That is growth on condensation rather than soiling, and where it is on the surface we can treat it and dry it. Where a mattress has been down there through a winter it has taken moisture into the filling, and nothing reaches the middle of a mattress to dry it out again. We say so on the day rather than take the booking, because that is a replacement decision and not a cleaning one.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The rest of the bed: Skirting and the wall line behind the headboard
  • Stains and odour: Mineral tidemarks from perspiration treated separately from the body oils beside them
  • The mattress itself: Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
  • Stains and odour: An honest verdict on what will lighten rather than clear, given before we start rather than after

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Strelley

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Strelley. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Can the mattress be taken outside or downstairs to be done?

No, and it should not need to be. Getting a double round a cottage winder is how covers tear on a newel post and how somebody puts a knee through a plaster wall, and a mattress carried out into a damp garden comes back holding more moisture than we would ever put into it. All of it happens in the bedroom, which is why the room has to be clear enough to work down both sides of the bed.

How long before the bed can be made up again?

Four to eight hours with air moving, and longer in a cold room whose window is a small casement that barely opens. Book it for the morning so the bed has the daylight hours, and plan to sleep somewhere else if we finish late in the afternoon. Sheets and a duvet over a mattress that is still damp underneath undo the whole visit, and a body on top adds more moisture again.

Is a mattress that has been in the garage between tenancies worth cleaning?

Look at it before you decide, and we will look at it with you. A few weeks against a cold wall usually leaves surface growth that treats and dries out perfectly well. A winter down there does not, because the moisture has gone into the filling where no air movement reaches and no cleaning can. If it is the second of those, paying for a clean buys you a mattress that smells again in the first humid week of the tenancy.

There is one socket in the bedroom and the bed is stood in front of it.

Say so at the booking and we will bring an extension lead and work off the landing instead. It is worth mentioning because drying is the part of a mattress clean that genuinely needs the electricity, and an air mover that has to come out so a lamp can go back on adds hours to when the bed is usable. In a cold cottage bedroom that is the difference between sleeping in it tonight and not.

Do you cover the whole of Strelley?

Yes, all of NG8 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Strelley?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Strelley?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. The estate half is easy: wide roads, verges, garage courts behind the terraces and off-street space at many properties, and we group Strelley with Bilborough, Aspley and Wollaton on the rota.
