Professional carpet cleaning means hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning although no steam is involved. A pre-spray breaks down the soil, the fibres are agitated, then the machine injects hot water under pressure and immediately vacuums it back out along with the suspended dirt.

We will tell you before starting which marks are likely to be permanent. Anyone who promises every stain will come out is either inexperienced or setting up a difficult conversation later. If urine has reached the underlay we will say so rather than take payment twice for a smell that comes back.

How extraction actually works

Identify the fibre first

Wool, nylon, polypropylene, polyester and natural fibres all behave differently. Wool is alkaline-sensitive and a high-pH cleaner costs you colour permanently. Sisal, jute and seagrass should not be wet cleaned at all. If a company does not ask what your carpet is made of, that is your answer.

Colourfast test in a hidden area

Before anything is applied across the room. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between a clean carpet and a claim.

Dry vacuum, then pre-spray, then dwell

Most of the cleaning happens before the machine touches the carpet. The pre-spray breaks the bond between the soil and the fibre, and it needs time to do it. Skipping the dwell is why hired machines disappoint.

Extract, then rinse to neutral

Hot water injected under pressure and immediately vacuumed back out. Then a neutralising rinse, because detergent residue left in the pile is sticky and attracts soil, which is why a badly cleaned carpet re-soils faster than one never cleaned at all.

Groom the pile and get air moving

Two to six hours to dry with good extraction and ventilation. Anything longer means over-wetting. Protective tabs stay under furniture legs for 24 hours, or you get rust marks and wood stain bleeding into a carpet you just paid to clean.

When to book it

Annually for most homes, every six months with pets or young children. After a deep clean rather than before it, and after decorating rather than before. If you are moving out, book it alongside the end of tenancy clean rather than as a separate visit, which incurs a second minimum charge.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

The mistakes below account for most of the disappointment in this kind of work, ours included. Several of them will save you money whether you hire us or not.

Rubbing a fresh spill

It spreads the spill outward into clean fibre and distorts the pile, leaving a fuzzy patch visible long after the stain itself is gone. Blot, from the outside inward, with a white cloth so you can see what is transferring.

Hot water on a protein stain

Blood, milk, egg and vomit all set permanently with heat. Cold water only, and never steam a urine stain before treating it, which locks the odour in for good.

Hiring a machine and over-wetting

The real hazard of doing it yourself. Too much water causes shrinkage, delamination, brown watermarks wicking up from the backing, and rippling that needs the carpet re-stretching. Use less solution than the instructions say and do more dry passes than feel necessary.

Skipping the rinse

Detergent residue left in the pile is sticky and attracts soil, so a badly cleaned carpet re-soils faster than one never cleaned at all. This is why a carpet sometimes looks worse a month after cleaning.

Replacing furniture too early

Metal and wooden legs on a damp carpet give you rust marks and wood stain bleeding into the pile, both far harder to remove than the soil you just paid to take out.

How often should carpets be cleaned?

Once every 12 months for most homes, every six months with pets, young children or heavy traffic. Many carpet warranties require professional cleaning at a defined interval and ask for receipts, so check the terms before you hire a machine instead.

Is it safe on wool?

Yes, with the right chemistry. Wool is alkaline-sensitive, so high-pH cleaners cause colour loss and texture change, and it needs lower moisture because it holds more water. We identify the fibre before choosing the product.

Why did my carpet re-soil quickly after a previous clean?

Almost always detergent residue left in the fibre, which is sticky and attracts soil. It is caused by insufficient rinsing, and a proper neutralising rinse prevents it.

Can you get pet smells out?

Where the urine is in the carpet, yes, with an enzymatic pre-treatment that breaks down the uric acid crystals ordinary detergents leave behind. Where it has soaked into the underlay, cleaning the carpet will not fix it.
