Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Clifton Village homes

Mature trees mean leaf litter from September, and what comes in off it is tannin rather than grit. Tannin is a dye: it stains pale wool a warm brown and lifts with a reducing agent, not with more detergent and pressure.

The trees set the calendar here. Mature planting round the church and along the escarpment sheds leaf from September into November, and what walks in off wet leaf litter is not the grit that comes off a road. It is tannin, in solution, and tannin behaves as a dye rather than as soil. It goes into wool rather than sitting on it, it shows worst on pale carpet, and it leaves a warm brown cast that stronger detergent and a harder pass will not touch, because there is nothing on the fibre to lift. What shifts it is a reducing agent given the right dwell and then flushed out, which is a different chemistry from the one that handles everyday soil, and knowing that before somebody scrubs saves a patch going pale in a dark carpet.

Clifton Village sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly listed and period property round the church and the hall, from small cottages to substantial houses in walled grounds, with twentieth century infill dropped in between them, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Clifton Village carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs

Old wool rugs and stair runners here are frequently jute backed, and jute is why we are careful with water. Wet it and it swells, then dries shorter than it started, which pulls a rug out of square and can lift the edges for good. Jute also releases its own brown colour up into a damp pile from underneath, so a rug cleaned too wet comes up marked through the pale areas a day later. Under it, the floor is usually board rather than concrete, with gaps, so whatever moisture we leave has somewhere to go and the ceiling below is where it arrives. Rugs come up, get cleaned off the floor and go back dry.

How a Clifton Village carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs

Machine choice here is decided by the lane. A van mounted system needs the vehicle within a hose run of the door, and for a good number of these houses there is nowhere the van can stand that close, so the work goes onto portable extraction with the tanks filled and emptied indoors. That is slower and it wants planning: a route for full tanks that does not cross carpet already cleaned, and somewhere to empty them that is not the kitchen sink you have just been asked not to block. Power is the other limit. Older wiring here often puts a whole floor onto one circuit, so a machine, a heater and an air mover running together will trip it, and the consumer unit is usually in an inconvenient corner under the stairs. We ask what has tripped before and stage the equipment around it. Winter bookings are then planned around drying rather than around cleaning, which is why we would rather come on a dry mild day in the middle of the week than on a wet one that suits the diary.

Who books it here

Settled owner occupiers who move rarely, so the work is a stable fortnightly round rather than a churn of one off jobs. Alongside it, an annual deep clean in houses where the fabric dictates the method, and carpet and upholstery work driven by what the mature trees put on the ground from September onward.

We run Clifton Village on the same round as Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington.

What we check on every Clifton Village job

The dark line that appears along the carpet against the skirting is the thing people always ask about, and it is not a mark left by a mop. Air is being drawn through the pile at the edge of the room, because there are gaps between the floorboards, a draught under the door and no seal anywhere in between, and the carpet is working as the filter. Everything airborne in the house, soot from an open fire, candle carbon, cooking smoke, is deposited in a narrow band exactly where that air enters. You see the same lines under doors and along the front edge of each stair tread. It answers to solvent and patience rather than to ordinary extraction, it rarely comes out entirely, and it returns unless the gaps in the floor below are dealt with. We say that before starting rather than afterwards.

What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Carpets: Agitation with a brush or rotary tool
  • Upholstery: Cleaned panel by panel so no drying edge shows
  • Carpets: Thorough dry vacuum first
  • Upholstery: Vacuumed with an upholstery tool, including down the sides and under cushions

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Clifton Village property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Clifton Village

Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£35 to £60

Typical one-off in Clifton Village. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical one-off
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Single room£35 to £60
Hallway, stairs and landing£45 to £85
2 bed flat, throughout£75 to £175
3 bed house, throughout£140 to £260

Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Upholstery, 3 seat sofa£45 to £90
Mattress clean£30 to £60
Pet urine treatment, per spot£15 to £40
Rug, per square metre£8 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. Can the hall runner be cleaned where it lies?

It is better lifted. Most of the older runners here are jute backed and sit straight on boards, and jute is the difficulty: it swells when wet, dries shorter than it started, and can drag a rug permanently out of square. It also gives up a brown colour into the damp pile from beneath. Lifted, cleaned away from the floor and dried flat, none of that happens, and the boards underneath get done while it is off them.

Every autumn the carpet inside the front door goes brown. Is that permanent?

Usually not, but it wants the right treatment rather than a harder scrub. What is in it is tannin off wet leaf, acting as a dye and sitting in the fibre rather than on top of it, so detergent and agitation only wear the carpet down. A reducing agent left to dwell and then flushed takes the colour out instead. The other half of the answer is a longer barrier mat, and booking extraction once the leaf has finished falling rather than before.

How long will a carpet take to dry if we book in winter?

Longer than in summer, and the honest planning number is most of a day with the heating on and windows cracked. These rooms have limited ventilation and cool surfaces, so moisture leaves slowly. We control it by extracting harder rather than wetting more, running an air mover where the wiring allows, and cleaning the rooms you need back first. If the weather is genuinely wet and still on the day, we will suggest moving it rather than leaving you with damp carpet for two days.

Can the sofa be cleaned where it stands? It will not come out of the room.

Yes, and it usually has to be. Doorways in these houses are low and often narrow, and plenty of furniture went in before a partition or a fitted cupboard did, so it is staying put. We work it in place with sheeting under and behind. The one thing to watch is the feet: iron castors and metal glides left standing on damp carpet will bleed a rust ring into the pile, so they go onto pads until everything underneath is properly dry.

Do you cover the whole of Clifton Village?

Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Clifton Village?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Clifton Village?

Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive, and we group Clifton Village with Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington on the rota.
