Domestic Cleaning for Clifton Village homes

Half the job here is knowing which surfaces take water and which do not. Limewashed plaster, waxed timber and old ironwork are dry dusted; the modern kitchen and bathroom behind them take everything a new house would.

The first visit to an old house here is mostly a survey of what the surfaces will take. In a room that has never been replastered, the finish on the wall is limewash or soft distemper, held on by very little: a damp cloth lifts it and carries the colour away, so those walls are dusted dry with a soft head and otherwise left alone. Waxed oak, unlacquered brass and old ironwork behave the same way, in that the general purpose spray which suits a modern kitchen strips or dulls them. Behind all of that, the kitchen and the bathroom are usually recent and take everything a new house would. The visit therefore runs on two sets of rules under one roof, and we settle which applies where before the first clean rather than during it.

Clifton Village sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. Settled owner occupiers who move rarely, so the work is a stable fortnightly round rather than a churn of one off jobs. Alongside it, an annual deep clean in houses where the fabric dictates the method, and carpet and upholstery work driven by what the mature trees put on the ground from September onward.

What we run into on Clifton Village domestic cleaning jobs

Door furniture is the recurring small job. Rim locks, thumb latches and unlacquered knobs take hand oils all day, go dull and then green in the crevices, and the polish that fixes that is abrasive and runs. On a modern door it would not matter. On a door carrying paint built up over a century, a run of polish dries into the brushmarks and the open grain and cannot be got out without taking the paint with it. So the metal comes off the door where it sensibly can, or it is worked with the paint masked. Old doors are rarely square either, and the leading corner has usually scored an arc into the carpet that no cleaning removes.

How a Clifton Village domestic cleaning job actually runs

Regular visits here are planned around getting to the door. The old village sits enclosed by the much later estate, and the lanes serving it were laid out for carts rather than for a van with kit in the back, so there is often nowhere to stop within sight of the house being cleaned. We work out at the survey where a vehicle can sensibly sit, how far equipment has to be carried, and whether that carry is up a slope, because all of it comes out of the hour. Timing matters as much. Term time traffic heading for the campus and the schools fills the approach roads at both ends of the day, so a mid morning start holds better than an early one, and a fixed weekly slot holds better than a floating one. Inside, the house adds its own delays: steps between rooms that were never levelled, doorways that will not take a full sized machine through without turning it on its side, and no utility room to work out of. A realistic visit length here is longer than the same floor area would need on the estate.

Who books it here

On the practical side: The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive. We leave the van where there is space and walk the kit in. Say beforehand if the only route to the back is a single door in a boundary wall.

We run Clifton Village on the same round as Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington.

What we check on every Clifton Village job

What walks in off the escarpment paths is not the black grit that comes off a main road. The slope down towards the river is sandy ground and the tracks above it are cut into that ground, so what arrives on boots and paws is pale buff, very fine, and bone dry once it is indoors. It hides in a mid tone carpet completely. You can look at a hall floor, see nothing, then take a damp cloth along the skirting and lift a wide brown mark off it. Because it is sand it is abrasive as well, so walking it up a hall wears the pile at the door line faster than anything else in the house manages to. We vacuum the first stretch of hall in two directions rather than one, and skirtings and the bottoms of doors go into the routine visit rather than being treated as an occasional extra, because that is where it settles.

What the domestic cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Kitchen: Sink and taps cleaned and polished
  • Bathrooms: Toilet inside and out, including the seat, hinges and base
  • Bedrooms and living areas: Beds made, or changed if clean linen is left out
  • Kitchen: Worktops wiped and disinfected

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full domestic cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Clifton Village property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What domestic cleaning costs in Clifton Village

Regular domestic cleaning, per visit, at a typical company rate. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

PropertyTypical per visit

ExtraTypical cost
Regular domestic, per hour£17 to £25
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. Our sitting room walls are limewashed. Can they be washed down?

No, and it is the one request we will refuse outright. Limewash and soft distemper sit on the plaster rather than in it, so a damp cloth takes the finish off onto the cloth and leaves a patch lighter than everything round it. Those walls get dusted dry with a soft head, cobwebs lifted rather than wiped, and marks left where they are. Anything worse than that belongs to a decorator, and we will tell you so on the first visit.

Do you polish the brass handles and latches?

If you want them polished, yes, but tell us, because plenty of people here want the patina left alone and are horrified when it disappears. The practical problem is the paint round the fitting. Metal polish is abrasive and it runs, and paintwork built up over generations has an open grain and brushmarks that hold the residue. So the handle comes off the door where it sensibly can, or the paint round it is masked before anything touches the metal.

Where will your van actually park?

We settle that at the survey rather than on the first morning. Some of these lanes have nowhere legal or sensible to stand, in which case we park where we can and carry, and we allow for the carry when we agree how long a visit takes. What we will not do is block a neighbour in or leave a vehicle across a passage, so if you know of a spot that works, or you have permission to use somebody's frontage, tell us and it saves everyone the guesswork.

We walk the dog down Clifton Grove most days. Can anything be done about the hall?

Yes, though it is management rather than a cure. The soil off those paths is fine pale sand, it travels much further into a house than road dirt does, and it grinds at the pile where everyone turns to shut the door. A long absorbent mat inside and something coarse outside catches most of it. Beyond that we vacuum the hall in two directions on every visit and do the skirtings there each time, because that strip needs more attention than the rest of the ground floor put together.

Do you cover the whole of Clifton Village?

Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does domestic cleaning cost in Clifton Village?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the bathroom count more than the bedroom count, how often we come, and whether there are pets. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start domestic cleaning in Clifton Village?

Usually within a week for a regular rota, and we will tell you the day rather than a window. The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive, and we group Clifton Village with Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington on the rota.
