Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Bakersfield homes
Wool twist laid down decades ago, a suite nobody has moved, and a quarter turn stair with winder treads that no wand meets squarely. Drying is quicker than average, because the timber floor void underneath is ventilated at both ends.
Two features of the housing decide how this work goes. The first is the age of the floor covering: much of it is wool twist laid years ago over jute backed underlay, and jute browns if it is over wetted, so the machine is set for the fibre in front of it instead of run at full flow. The second is what sits underneath. These are suspended timber floors ventilated at both ends, so once the pile is groomed and air is moving they dry noticeably faster than the same carpet over a concrete slab. Upholstery goes with it, because the suites here are old, full sized and heavy, and they have absorbed years of the same person in the same chair.
Bakersfield sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly 1930s semis and blocks of four in long curving roads off Oakdale Road, council built with deep gardens, alongside private bay fronted semis of the same decade and pockets of later infill, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Bakersfield carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs
The stair is the awkward part of every job in these houses. It turns a quarter at the bottom on winder treads, which are wedge shaped, so a wand cannot sit flat and the narrow end never gets the passes the wide end does unless somebody works it by hand with a stair tool. The nosings date the carpet before anything else does: on a stair walked for twenty years the fibre at the front edge of each tread is not soiled, it is worn away, and cleaning the tread faces makes that contrast more obvious rather than less. Better to know that before we start than after.
How a Bakersfield carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs
The practical constraint here is the distance between the van and the room being cleaned. Hose has to run from the machine in the vehicle to a back bedroom in a house standing above the pavement at the top of a long path, and on the steeper roads the van needs somewhere level enough to work properly, so it helps to tell us where there is realistic space to stop before the day. A hose through the front door means that door stays propped, which is fine in June and cold in January, and it is why winter bookings sit best in the middle of the day. Preparation makes more difference to the result than anything else. Small items, lamps, plant pots and whatever lives under a bed want lifting beforehand, because time spent moving ornaments is time not spent on the carpet. Where two rooms have been knocked into one, that space is a single job and cannot be split across two visits without a visible line where the work stopped, so plan on the room being out of use for the rest of the day.
Who books it here
Fortnightly domestic rounds fill most of it, in houses where the same family has been in place for years. Deep cleans follow, usually set off by redecorating or by an elderly relative moving in. Carpet and upholstery work is the third strand, booked for tired pile rather than a spill: long occupancy, heavy suites, and rooms nobody rearranges.
We run Bakersfield on the same round as Carlton, Sneinton and Colwick.
What we check on every Bakersfield job
Look at where the carpet meets the skirting board in any room over a suspended timber floor and you will usually find a dark line about a finger wide running the full length of the wall. It is not a mop line and it is not spillage. Air is drawn up through the gap between the floorboards and the wall, the carpet edge acts as a filter, and it catches soot and fine airborne particles out of that air for years on end. The same line shows under a door that is normally kept shut, and across a hearth where a flue has been blocked but never properly sealed. It needs a specific pre spray and a hand tool rather than the wand, it takes several passes, and it very rarely comes out completely. We will tell you at the survey whether yours will lift or only lighten.
What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Carpets: Agitation with a brush or rotary tool
- Carpets: Fibre identified and a colourfast test in an inconspicuous area
- Also covered: Rugs, on site or collected
- Upholstery: Cleaned panel by panel so no drying edge shows
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Bakersfield
Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£35 to £60
Typical one-off in Bakersfield. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Single room | £35 to £60 |
| Hallway, stairs and landing | £45 to £85 |
| 2 bed flat, throughout | £75 to £175 |
| 3 bed house, throughout | £140 to £260 |
| 4 bed house, throughout | £200 to £350 |
Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Upholstery, 3 seat sofa | £45 to £90 |
| Mattress clean | £30 to £60 |
| Pet urine treatment, per spot | £15 to £40 |
| Rug, per square metre | £8 to £20 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

How long before we can walk on it?
Touch dry in a few hours in these houses, and properly dry the same day if the weather lets a window stay open, which is quicker than we would promise on a solid floor. The ventilated void under the boards does most of that, and grooming the pile so it stands upright instead of lying matted does the rest. Walk on it in clean socks rather than shoes or bare feet until it is fully dry, and leave furniture on foam blocks until that evening.
Will cleaning make a twenty year old carpet look new?
No, and anybody who says it will is selling something. Extraction removes soil, and soil is only part of what makes an old carpet look tired. The traffic lane down a hall and the front edge of every stair tread are physical wear: the fibre tips are abraded and no longer catch the light evenly, and nothing brings that back. What does come back is colour, smell and texture across the rest of the room, which is usually most of the floor you look at.
The dog had an accident months ago and the smell keeps coming back. Can you fix it?
It depends how far down it went. Urine passes through a wool pile into the backing, and often into the underlay and the boards below, so cleaning the pile alone takes out the stain and leaves the smell, which then reappears in warm weather. We treat what can be reached with an enzyme product and proper dwell time. Where the underlay has taken it, the honest answer is that a section needs lifting, and we will say which of the two you have before starting.
How much furniture do we need to move ourselves?
We move what one person can lift safely: dining chairs, a small table, a light armchair. Beds, wardrobes and heavy suites stay put and we clean up to and around them, which loses very little, because carpet that has sat under a wardrobe since the day it was laid is not soiled. If you want every inch of floor done, empty the room the evening before rather than on the morning. Anything electrical, fragile or valuable is for you to move, not us.
Do you cover the whole of Bakersfield?
Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Bakersfield?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Bakersfield?
Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Parking is easy: wide roads, verges and drives on many plots, and we group Bakersfield with Carlton, Sneinton and Colwick on the rota.
