Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Mapperley homes
The hill means more grit walked in, and grit is abrasive. Stair carpets take the worst of it and are priced separately because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Carpet cleaning is the job Mapperley generates more of than anywhere else on our patch, and the reason is the stairs. One flight, often two, plus a half landing, all carrying the traffic of every room in the house. A stair run wears at the nosing of each tread first, where the pile bends over the edge and gets ground against the grit that came up the hill on somebody's shoes. It cannot be done with a standard wand either, so it is hand tool work, tread by tread and riser by riser, which is why it is priced on its own rather than folded into a room rate. Cleaned on a sensible interval it is the best value job in the house.
Mapperley sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly Victorian villas on the hill, interwar semis toward Porchester, and a steady flow of converted flats, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Mapperley carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs
Machine access is worth mentioning when you book. Where the house sits well above the road we run hose and cable from the van at the kerb, up the external steps and into the hall, and there is a practical limit to that reach before suction starts dropping off. If there is a nearer space, a drive, or a socket in a garage part way up, say so. On a steep frontage we also route the hose so nothing crosses the steps at ankle height, which matters if anyone is coming and going while we work.
How a Mapperley carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs
Pricing a stair run up here begins with counting it properly. A straight flight of thirteen is one thing. A hill house usually turns, so there are winders at the corner, three or four wedge shaped treads that take roughly twice as long as a straight one because the tool has to be worked across a triangle without overwetting the narrow end. Add the short flights of three or four steps between levels that nobody counts when describing the property, plus the half landing, which behaves like a small room in its own right. We ask how many flights there are and whether any of them turn before quoting, because that answer moves the time more than the room count does. On the day we work from the top down, standing on the flight below whichever tread is being cleaned, so nothing wet gets walked on and there is no reason for anyone to step over a running hose. If the household needs to move about, we say which flight is out and clean it straight through instead of in halves.
Who books it here
Regular domestic work in the interwar semis, and carpet cleaning more often than average, because the hill means more grit walked in and stair carpets that take the brunt of it.
We run Mapperley on the same round as Sherwood, Carlton and Sneinton.
What we check on every Mapperley job
On a stair run the fibre gets identified first, because a wool runner and a polypropylene fitted carpet want different moisture and different heat. Then the dry pass, which takes longer than the extraction: a crevice tool along the gripper line at the back of every tread where grit gathers, the same down both sides against the string, and the spindle bases, which trap hair and fluff that nothing else reaches. Stair rods come out and are cleaned separately rather than worked around. Where a runner sits on polished timber we mask the exposed boards, since water wicking under a varnished edge lifts the finish and drying does not put it back. Less moisture goes into a flight than into a floor for the same reason: anything that runs finds the nosing, then the riser under it, then the bottom step, and the bottom step is the one that stays damp longest.
What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Upholstery: Cleaned panel by panel so no drying edge shows
- Carpets: Neutralising rinse, so no sticky detergent residue is left to attract soil
- Carpets: Fibre identified and a colourfast test in an inconspicuous area
- Upholstery: Low moisture, because the foam underneath holds water for days
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Mapperley property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 8.
What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Mapperley
Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Single room | £35 to £60 |
| Hallway, stairs and landing | £45 to £85 |
| 2 bed flat, throughout | £75 to £175 |
| 3 bed house, throughout | £140 to £260 |
| 4 bed house, throughout | £200 to £350 |
Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Upholstery, 3 seat sofa | £45 to £90 |
| Mattress clean | £30 to £60 |
| Pet urine treatment, per spot | £15 to £40 |
| Rug, per square metre | £8 to £20 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

How long before we can use the stairs again?
Two to six hours to dry, and a stair run dries faster than a room because air moves through the well. You can use them carefully before that in clean socks rather than shoes or bare feet. What we would avoid is carrying anything heavy up while the pile is damp, since that presses the fibres flat exactly where the wear already shows.
Is it worth cleaning a stair carpet that already looks worn?
Sometimes, and we will tell you which it is before starting. Grey, flattened pile is bonded soil and it comes out. Pale strips along the front edge of each tread are abraded fibre tips, which is wear rather than dirt, and no cleaning restores it. On a hill house the two usually sit side by side on the same flight.
Our stairs turn at the corner. Does that change anything?
Yes, in time rather than in method. Winder treads are wedge shaped, so the tool cannot be pulled in one straight stroke, and the narrow end by the newel takes very little water before it has had too much. They are the slowest part of any flight and the part most likely to look untouched if somebody rushes them. Say how many turns there are when you book and we allow for them properly instead of discovering them on the day.
We have a runner with polished wood either side. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but it changes the job. The exposed timber is masked along both edges before anything wet goes down, and the runner is worked from the middle outward rather than into the edge, so nothing wicks under the finish. If the boards themselves want attention that is a different job with different products, and we will tell you so rather than wetting a varnished stair. Rods and brackets get lifted and wiped while the runner dries.
Do you cover the whole of Mapperley?
Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Mapperley?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Mapperley?
Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Steep streets and some properties well above road level, and we group Mapperley with Sherwood, Carlton and Sneinton on the rota.
