Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for St Ann's homes

Approaches are concrete and tarmac rather than grass, so what comes in is sharp path grit that works down low in the pile. Most fitted carpet in this stock is synthetic, which takes a stronger pre-spray than wool would.

What gets walked into a house here is path grit rather than garden mud. The approaches are concrete and tarmac, the parking courts are surfaced, and the route from car to door is short and hard the whole way. That grit is small and angular, it works down through the pile instead of sitting on top of it, and a domestic vacuum lifts very little of it. It is also why carpet in these houses goes flat and grey along the walking line long before anyone would call it dirty. The other thing worth knowing is fibre. Most fitted carpet in this stock is synthetic rather than wool, which widens what can safely be used on it.

St Ann's sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly 1970s redevelopment housing in low brick terraces and cul-de-sacs, with garage courts and walkways between them, plus older Victorian terraces surviving along the hill's upper edges and around the allotment boundary, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on St Ann's carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs

The staircase in a 1970s terrace is usually one straight flight with a small square landing at the top, which is a different proposition from the two flights and half landing in the older houses further up. A straight flight puts the wear in the same place on every tread, right at the nose, and the nose is the part a wand cannot get into. It takes a hand tool, tread and riser separately, working downwards so nothing already cleaned gets walked over. The bottom three treads are almost always darker than the rest, because that is where grit off the path gets kicked as people come in.

How a St Ann's carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs

The practical problem on this estate is the distance between the machine and the room. Parking is in a court behind, the front door faces a footpath, and the hose has to travel that whole way, along the walkway, over the threshold and into the lounge. So the first thing we do is walk the route, work out where the door needs propping and where matting goes so nothing gets trodden through the house, and agree that with you rather than discovering it with the hose already run. Inside, a through lounge with a three piece suite in it has to be worked in halves, since there is nowhere to put a sofa except the other end of the room. Drying is the other local factor. A concrete floor holds cold, and night storage heating is fading through the afternoon, so upholstery cleaned late in the day dries slowly unless air is moving. Morning appointments dry better, which is why we offer them for suites specifically rather than for everything.

Who books it here

Regular fortnightly cleans in occupied family homes, and a steady run of tenancy-end work, because much of the housing here is rented rather than owned and turnover is constant. Deep cleans tend to be booked by an adult child arranging one for a parent, or ahead of a housing inspection rather than on a spring impulse.

We run St Ann's on the same round as Sneinton, Mapperley and Nottingham City Centre.

What we check on every St Ann's job

Upholstery gets checked before anything wet touches it. We find the manufacturer's label under a cushion or along the base and read the cleaning code, test for colourfastness on a hidden seam at the back or under the skirt, and check whether the covers are removable, because a zip does not always mean a cover is meant to come off. Frames get a look too, since an old sofa with a loose leg should not be dragged across a slab. Dry soil comes out with a vacuum and an upholstery tool before any moisture, otherwise wetting simply turns dust into a stain. Afterwards the pile is groomed, air is put across the piece, and we check the seat cushions by hand rather than the arms, because the arms always dry first and tell you nothing useful. Feet and castors go back onto protectors so a damp frame is not standing on carpet while it dries out.

What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Also covered: Stairs and landings, priced separately because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand
  • Upholstery: Low moisture, because the foam underneath holds water for days
  • Upholstery: Cleaned panel by panel so no drying edge shows
  • Upholstery: Embedded hair lifted with a rubber brush

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your St Ann's property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in St Ann's

Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

Questions

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaningin St Ann's

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

How do I know whether my carpet is wool or synthetic?

We test rather than guess, because the answer decides the chemistry. A burn test on a few fibres taken from a hidden edge settles it quickly: wool smells of burnt hair and leaves an ash that crushes between your fingers, while synthetic melts into a hard bead. Wool wants lower pH and less moisture. Synthetic will take a stronger pre-spray and a hotter rinse, which is genuinely useful when the soiling is ground-in path grit rather than spills.

Will cleaning bring back the flattened line down the hall?

Partly, and it depends what has happened to the fibre. Where the pile is matted and dirty, extraction and grooming lift it noticeably. Where the tips have already abraded away under years of grit, that is wear rather than soil and nothing puts it back. We tell you which of the two you have before we start rather than afterwards. A mat inside the door is what slows the next round of it down.

How long will the sofa take to dry?

Several hours rather than an hour, and longer here than in a modern house. Cold floors and heating that fades through the evening both slow it down. We extract as dry as the fabric allows, groom the pile and put air across it before leaving. Keeping a window ajar in that room for the rest of the day makes a real difference. Sitting on it while the foam is still damp is what causes marks to come back.

My chair has no cleaning label on it at all. Can it still be done?

Usually, though it changes how we approach it. With no code to work from we test more carefully, on a hidden area at the back or underneath, and start with the gentlest method that will move the soil. Some older fabrics and anything with a viscose content will not take much water at all, and for those a low moisture method is the sensible route. If a test tells us it is not safe to clean, we say so before starting.

Do you cover the whole of St Ann's?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in St Ann's?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in St Ann's?

Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Much of the estate separates cars from front doors: parking sits in courts and rear bays while the house opens onto a footpath, and we group St Ann's with Sneinton, Mapperley and Nottingham City Centre on the rota.
