Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Thorneywood homes

Two or three flights of stairs in a house this shape, and winter road salt off gritted streets in the pile of every one of them. Salt draws moisture back in, so it has to come out with the water rather than be brushed off.

Steep streets get gritted early and gritted often, and rock salt is what separates carpet here from carpet on a level street. It arrives on shoes as hard white crystals, works down to the backing where a domestic vacuum cannot reach it, and unlike ordinary grit it is hygroscopic: it draws moisture out of the air and keeps that part of the pile faintly damp for the whole winter. That is why a hall can feel cool and slightly tacky underfoot in February while looking perfectly clean. Brushing achieves nothing with salt, because it is dissolved rather than swept. It has to be taken out in the water, which is the argument for booking the hall and stairs in early spring rather than waiting for summer.

Thorneywood sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly late Victorian and Edwardian terraces built in short runs across the slope, some standing a storey above their own pavement and others dropping below it, with interwar semis on the higher ground, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Thorneywood carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs

Staircases in these houses rarely run straight. A hillside terrace nearly always turns, so there are winders at the bottom or a half landing part way up, and the winder treads are the awkward part: wedge shaped, deep at one end and almost nothing at the other, with the carpet folded rather than cut where it narrows. That fold holds grit and hides it completely. A stair tool has to go into the fold from the wide end and be drawn toward the newel post, one tread at a time, which is slow and is the reason stairs are quoted separately from rooms. The half landing takes the heaviest wear anywhere in the house, because everyone pivots on it.

How a Thorneywood carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs

Drying is the part of this job that has to be planned in these houses, not the cleaning. Rooms are small, the sash and casement windows on opposite walls rarely line up, and a rear yard that sits in shade under the bank does not pull much air through the back of the house. So we take the earliest slot of the day wherever we can, ask for the heating to be on at a normal setting rather than turned up, and open windows on the sheltered side only. We also need to know where the nearest tap and drain are before we arrive, because filling and emptying is done from inside the property here rather than from a vehicle sitting at the kerb. Anything that needs to move off the carpet ideally moves the evening before, particularly in a front room where the bay leaves very little clear floor. If there are pets or small children, plan for them to be elsewhere until the pile is dry to the touch rather than merely walkable.

Who books it here

Regular domestic cleaning takes most of the diary, in houses that are two storeys at the front and three at the back because of the fall of the land. Tenancy-end work is steady on the rented terraces lower down the slope. Deep cleans cluster in autumn, before the heating goes on and the house is shut up for winter.

We run Thorneywood on the same round as St Ann's, Sneinton and Porchester.

What we check on every Thorneywood job

The dark grey line that appears along the skirting, across a doorway threshold and at the top edge of the riser on each stair is not dirt sitting on the carpet. It is soot fine airborne material that has been filtered out of moving air by the pile, which is why it appears exactly where air is being pulled through a gap. In houses with original floorboards and no seal beneath the carpet, air comes up through the boards all winter and the carpet does the filtering. Recognising it matters because it changes the treatment. Ordinary extraction passes straight over it, since the soiling is bonded to the fibre rather than loose within it. It needs a pre-treatment left to dwell and then agitation along the line itself, and even then a stubborn edge may lighten rather than disappear. We say which it is before starting rather than after.

What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Upholstery: Vacuumed with an upholstery tool, including down the sides and under cushions
  • Carpets: Thorough dry vacuum first
  • Upholstery: Cleaned panel by panel so no drying edge shows
  • Carpets: Agitation with a brush or rotary tool

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Thorneywood property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Thorneywood

Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£35 to £60

Typical one-off in Thorneywood. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical one-off
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Single room£35 to £60
Hallway, stairs and landing£45 to £85
2 bed flat, throughout£75 to £175
3 bed house, throughout£140 to £260
4 bed house, throughout£200 to £350

Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Upholstery, 3 seat sofa£45 to £90
Mattress clean£30 to £60
Pet urine treatment, per spot£15 to £40
Rug, per square metre£8 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Questions

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaningin Thorneywood

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Can you get an extraction machine up to a first floor flat with an outside stair?

The machine does not go up. It stays at ground level or in the van and only the hose and the wand come up the stairs, which is how this work is done in any property with awkward access. What we need to know beforehand is roughly how many steps there are and whether the door at the top opens inwards, because hose runs have a working limit and beyond it suction drops off enough to leave the carpet wetter than it should be.

Do you need to move the furniture, and can you on a floor that is not level?

We move what two people can shift safely and we leave anything beyond that, cleaning up to it and telling you what was not reached. On uneven floors there is one extra thing worth flagging: furniture in these houses often has packers or folded card wedged under the feet to stop it rocking, and those get lost if nobody notices them. We keep them with the item. Protectors go under the legs while the carpet dries.

How long before we can use the room normally again?

Walkable in socks within a couple of hours in most cases, back to normal use later the same day, and fully dry overnight where the room can be ventilated. In a back room with one window and no cross draught it takes longer, so we bring an air mover for those. What slows drying more than anything is putting furniture straight back down onto damp pile, so leave the protectors we put under the legs in place until the following morning.

Is hot water extraction safe over old floorboards?

Yes, when the machine is set up properly and the operator is not chasing a stain with extra water. The risk in these houses is the gaps between boards, because anything that gets past the underlay ends up under the floor where it cannot dry. That is why we use controlled passes and dry strokes rather than soaking, check moisture at the edges before finishing, and treat a heavily soiled area with pre-spray and dwell time instead of more water.

Do you cover the whole of Thorneywood?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Thorneywood?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Thorneywood?

Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Parking is on-street and often round the corner on the level rather than outside the door, and we group Thorneywood with St Ann's, Sneinton and Porchester on the rota.
