Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Woodthorpe homes

The honest conversation happens before the machine comes off the van, because in rooms this size a clean stops hiding what years of light and footfall have already done to the carpet rather than undoing it.

Two things come up in these houses that do not come up in smaller ones. The first is that the furniture has not moved in years. A suite in a room this size stays where it was put, and the carpet under and around it is a different colour from the traffic route through the middle, so a clean does not create that difference, it stops hiding it. The second is sunlight. A wide bay facing south lays a strong line of light across the same strip of carpet every day for a decade, and the fading that produces is permanent. We point both out before starting, because the moment to hear about them is not after the machine has been over the floor.

Woodthorpe sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly wide interwar detached houses and large semis on generous plots, with 1950s and 1960s detached infill on the roads falling away from the park, and mature gardens behind almost all of it, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Woodthorpe carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs

Pile reversal is the other thing worth explaining in advance. In cut pile carpet, and particularly in a plain wool one, patches of pile can settle lying in a different direction from the rest and reflect light differently, so they read as damp or dirty long after the carpet has dried. It is a permanent characteristic of how that piece of carpet has bedded down rather than something cleaning caused, though cleaning makes it more obvious because the pile has been groomed one way. In this stock it shows up most in long hallways and where a rug has sat on a fitted carpet for years.

How a Woodthorpe carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs

A carpet clean in Woodthorpe is usually a whole ground floor rather than a single room, because the reception rooms open into one another and the same carpet runs through the hall behind them. That has consequences on the day. We work back from the furthest room towards the front door so that nothing already cleaned gets walked over, and the hall and the stairs are always done last. Access is easy here for once: a drive at the side means the machine and the hose run in through a side or front door without crossing a public footpath, which is what makes a powerful unit workable at all on these streets. Drying is the part worth planning. Rooms this size hold a lot of air, so we want windows open at both ends of the house and the heating on low rather than high, and on a damp week we ask for the room to be left alone for the day rather than furniture going straight back onto a pile that is still giving up moisture.

Who books it here

Regular domestic cleaning in houses with more rooms than a working household can stay on top of, and annual deep cleans booked before Christmas and again once the pollen has finished in June. Carpet extraction runs above average, because gravel drives and long gardens feed grit into the hall from October onwards.

We run Woodthorpe on the same round as Sherwood, Daybrook and Mapperley.

What we check on every Woodthorpe job

Filtration soiling is the mark people ring us about most in these houses, and the one they have almost always misread. It shows as a hard, evenly dark line tight against the skirting, sometimes under a door and along the nose of a stair riser, and it looks as though something has been spilled and spread along the wall. It is airborne soot and fine dust drawn through the gap where the carpet meets the skirting as air moves from the room into the void below the floor, which is why original suspended timber floors make it common here. It responds to a specific pre treatment and a great deal of agitation rather than to ordinary hot water extraction, it does not always clear completely, and it will return unless that gap gets sealed. We photograph the worst of it before and after, so you can see what actually shifted rather than taking our word for it.

What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Carpets: Agitation with a brush or rotary tool
  • Upholstery: Vacuumed with an upholstery tool, including down the sides and under cushions
  • Also covered: Rugs, on site or collected
  • Carpets: Pre-spray suited to the soiling, with proper dwell time

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Woodthorpe

Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£35 to £60

Typical one-off in Woodthorpe. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical one-off
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Single room£35 to £60
Hallway, stairs and landing£45 to £85
2 bed flat, throughout£75 to £175
3 bed house, throughout£140 to £260
4 bed house, throughout£200 to £350

Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Upholstery, 3 seat sofa£45 to £90
Mattress clean£30 to £60
Pet urine treatment, per spot£15 to £40
Rug, per square metre£8 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The carpet looks patchy where the sofa was. Did the cleaning do that?

No. What you are looking at is carpet that has been protected from light and footfall next to carpet that has had years of both. Cleaning removed the layer of soil that was evening the two out. Fading from a south facing bay is not reversible and neither is fibre that has already abraded at the tips. Moving furniture around a room every few years is the only real prevention, and we will tell you which of the two you are seeing.

Do you move the big furniture?

The larger pieces, yes, and the feet go onto barrier tabs before anything is set back down. Move the small things yourself: lamps, ornaments, anything on a low shelf and anything with a cable trailing to it. What we cannot move is a fitted wardrobe, a piano or a loaded bookcase, so the carpet beneath those stays as it is and we clean up to the edge cleanly rather than leaving a visible line across the room.

How long before the rooms are usable again?

Walkable within a couple of hours in clean socks or on the covers we put down, and back in normal use the same evening. Rooms this size take longer than a flat, because there is more carpet and far more air to move, so we bring air movers and we want windows open at both ends of the house. Put the heating on low rather than high, since hot dry air on a damp wool pile dries the surface and traps the moisture underneath it.

Our carpets are old wool. Is cleaning them safe?

Usually, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. Wool here is often original to the last time the room was done, and it is more sensitive than a modern synthetic: it dislikes high alkalinity, high heat and over wetting, and a strong product strips the natural lanolin and leaves the pile feeling harsh. So we test in a corner, use a wool safe product at a lower pH and extract more than we put down. Where a hessian backing has gone brittle we tell you before starting.

Do you cover the whole of Woodthorpe?

Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Woodthorpe?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Woodthorpe?

Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Almost every house has a drive, so the van comes off the road and the equipment travels a short distance, and we group Woodthorpe with Sherwood, Daybrook and Mapperley on the rota.
