Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Sherwood homes
Period houses with fitted carpet over original boards, where over-wetting is the real risk. Proper extraction pulls the water back out rather than leaving it to find the boards underneath, which is the difference between a clean carpet and a cupped floor.
The classic Sherwood booking is hall, stairs and landing, and in a period terrace that run has two features a modern house does not. The stairs usually turn on winders rather than running straight, so the treads are wedge shaped at the corner and cannot be done with a standard wand at all. And the carpet is laid over original floorboards with gaps between them rather than over a concrete slab, which means over wetting does not merely slow the drying, it sends water down to the joists and occasionally through the ceiling below. We work deliberately low moisture on those floors and do more dry passes rather than fewer wetter ones.
Sherwood sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis running off Mansfield Road, with larger detached houses toward Woodthorpe, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Sherwood carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs
Underlay is the tell. Lift a corner in one of these houses and it is often thin felt or a rubber crumb laid decades ago, sometimes straight onto boards with no ply over them, and it holds water far longer than a modern foam does. That is why a carpet here can feel dry on top at four hours and still be damp underneath at bedtime. We check the underlay at the start, and where it has gone hard and brittle we say so, because at that point cleaning is delaying a decision rather than fixing anything.
How a Sherwood carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs
Winter is when the drying plan matters here, and it follows from the same ceilings that make everything else slower. A tall room holds a large volume of cold air, plenty of these houses still have single glazed sashes, and the moisture a carpet gives up as it dries travels to the coldest surface in the room, which is the glass. Leave the sashes shut and you get condensation and wet reveals by evening. Leave them open and you have a ground floor window open on a street. What works is short bursts of through ventilation while somebody is in, heating kept low and constant rather than turned up in a blast, and an air mover set to blow along the pile rather than at it. The job gets planned around that: front rooms first thing so they have the whole day, and any room somebody sleeps in finished before lunch. Knocked through reception rooms are common here, which means one long run of carpet drying as a single job instead of two rooms done on separate days.
Who books it here
Professional households wanting a regular fortnightly clean, and a steady run of deep cleans in period houses where the annual jobs have been left a little too long.
We run Sherwood on the same round as Mapperley, Arnold and New Basford.
What we check on every Sherwood job
Furniture in these rooms is large, because the rooms are, and the pieces that come with a period house cause their own problems. A deep sofa standing in a bay is usually on castors, and castors mark a stripped board floor the moment the frame is dragged, so the legs come up onto blocks and the tabs go under once it is back. Wool appears far more often in this stock than in newer housing, in the fitted carpet and in the rugs, so the pre spray is chosen for its pH rather than for a synthetic, and the pile is groomed rather than left flattened. Rugs on bare boards are the item we most often take away instead of cleaning in place, because there is nothing underneath to catch moisture. Cotton fringes on a wool ground bleed if they are worked wet, so they are cleaned along their length by hand and dried flat rather than hung.
What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Carpets: Fibre identified and a colourfast test in an inconspicuous area
- Carpets: Agitation with a brush or rotary tool
- Carpets: Pile groomed, protective tabs under furniture legs
- Upholstery: Embedded hair lifted with a rubber brush
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Sherwood
Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Single room | £35 to £60 |
| Hallway, stairs and landing | £45 to £85 |
| 2 bed flat, throughout | £75 to £175 |
| 3 bed house, throughout | £140 to £260 |
| 4 bed house, throughout | £200 to £350 |
Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Upholstery, 3 seat sofa | £45 to £90 |
| Mattress clean | £30 to £60 |
| Pet urine treatment, per spot | £15 to £40 |
| Rug, per square metre | £8 to £20 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Will the water go through to the ceiling below?
Not with proper extraction, and controlling the moisture is exactly why we work differently on a boarded floor than on a slab. The risk comes from a hired machine putting down more solution than it takes back up. If a previous clean left a mark on the ceiling below, tell us, because it changes how we approach that area and may mean the underlay is holding water.
How are the winder stairs priced?
Separately from the flat run, as stairs always are, and a turning flight takes longer than a straight one. Each wedge shaped tread is done with a hand tool from an awkward position, and the risers and the string at the side need doing as well. It is slow rather than difficult, and it is why hall, stairs and landing is quoted as three items.
Can you clean a rug that sits on stripped floorboards?
Usually we would rather take it away and do it properly off site, because a rug on bare boards has nothing beneath it to hold the moisture and the boards have gaps. If it has to be done in place, we lift it onto a sheet and a barrier layer, work it low moisture, and put it back only once it is dry. Tell us the fibre and whether it is hand knotted when you book.
The sofa sits in the bay on castors. Do we need to move it?
Leave it to us. Castors will score a stripped board floor as soon as anyone shoves the frame, so we lift rather than push, take the cushions off first to reduce the weight, and set the legs on blocks while the carpet under and around it dries. Clear the small things from the windowsill and the shelves in the bay before we arrive, and that is genuinely all we need from you.
Do you cover the whole of Sherwood?
Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Sherwood?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Sherwood?
Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. On-street parking on the roads off Mansfield Road, generally fine outside the evening rush, and we group Sherwood with Mapperley, Arnold and New Basford on the rota.
