Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Carrington homes

Carpet has come up in a lot of these houses. The work is rugs on stripped boards, a runner over painted treads, and the grit that has been ground into a varnished floor under a rug nobody has lifted in two years.

Carpet has come up in a lot of these houses. Stripped and finished boards downstairs with rugs over them is close to standard now in a small period house, and it changes this job completely. The wear lands on a rug rather than on a fitted carpet, the rug can be lifted and cleaned properly on both faces, and the floor underneath is the part people forget: board gaps holding years of grit, and a rectangle of paler timber where the rug has kept the light off it. Upstairs there is often a runner over painted treads, which has to be cleaned without soaking the exposed timber down either side of it.

Carrington sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly small two up two down cottages built to one pattern in short straight streets from the 1830s, many with painted brick fronts, and larger bay fronted houses on the roads climbing away, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Carrington carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs

Rugs on a hard floor slide, and where they slide they grind. Lift one that has been down a couple of years and there is a dull band in the varnish under its leading edge, with grit driven into the finish rather than sitting on top of it. An underlay or a gripper mat deals with the cause; cleaning does not. On the rug itself we check the back before anything wet happens, because plenty of what is sold as a cotton flatweave will shrink, and a jute backing will mark a pale board while it dries. We dry rugs raised off the floor rather than flat on it, as much for the boards as for the rug.

How a Carrington carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs

The hose run is the constraint that decides how this job goes here. A machine works from the vehicle, and the vehicle has to stand somewhere on a street of terraces where every space is spoken for, so the distance from the kerb to the back bedroom is longer than it looks on the doorstep. We carry extra hose for that and we protect the front step and the hall where it crosses, since a hose dragged over a painted threshold marks it. Where the run genuinely cannot be made, a portable unit comes in instead, filled and emptied at the kitchen tap, which is slower but does not fail halfway up the stairs. Drying is the other local reality. These rooms are small, the windows are modest, and with the front and back of the house on different levels there is often no through draught worth the name. So we plan the day around it: soft furnishings and upstairs first, downstairs last, windows open where the weather allows, and a realistic answer about when the room is usable rather than an optimistic one.

Who books it here

Check out cleans arrive singly and all year rather than in a summer block, because the renting is done by people working in the city and at the hospital up the road and a notice period lands whenever a job does. Around that sits fortnightly work in the owned houses, and deep cleans booked when a small property changes hands.

We run Carrington on the same round as Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields.

What we check on every Carrington job

Sofas in these front rooms live hard against a wall or into the side of a chimney breast, and they never move, which produces damage people blame on the fabric. The back panel facing the wall collects a fine grey bloom that is a mixture of wall rub and dust, and the top of the back cushion carries a darker band exactly where heads rest. Lift the seat cushions and the deck underneath is the real story: crumbs, coins and hair, plus a fine crumbly orange dust along the seams if the foam has started to break down, which no amount of cleaning reverses. On a three seater squeezed into a narrow room the arm nearest the door is always the dirtier one, because everybody uses it to lever themselves up on the way past, and that arm needs a slower pass than its twin.

What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Upholstery: Cleaned panel by panel so no drying edge shows
  • Upholstery: Care label checked for the W, S, WS or X code before anything is applied
  • Carpets: Hot water extraction at pressure
  • Carpets: Thorough dry vacuum first

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Carrington

Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£35 to £60

Typical one-off in Carrington. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical one-off
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Single room£35 to £60
Hallway, stairs and landing£45 to £85
2 bed flat, throughout£75 to £175
3 bed house, throughout£140 to £260
4 bed house, throughout£200 to £350

Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Upholstery, 3 seat sofa£45 to £90
Mattress clean£30 to £60
Pet urine treatment, per spot£15 to £40
Rug, per square metre£8 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Can a rug be cleaned in the house, or does it have to go away?

Most can be done in the house with low moisture extraction and then raised to dry, which is quicker for you and avoids anything going missing. What we would rather take away is a wool or silk rug that needs immersion, anything with dyes that move when tested, and anything so heavily soiled that it wants a proper wash rather than a surface clean. We test a corner first and say which of those it is rather than committing blind.

Our stairs have a runner over bare boards. Can they be cleaned in place?

Yes, by hand and with very little water. The runner gets an upholstery tool worked in two directions rather than a wand, because a wand overhangs the edge and puts water onto the timber either side, which is where the damage would be. The exposed boards get a crevice tool along the join with the runner, since that is where grit collects. Reckon on the treads staying damp for a few hours, so a morning booking is better than an afternoon one.

Will cleaning get rid of a pet smell for good?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on how far down it went. If it sat on the surface of the pile it comes out. If a dog or cat repeatedly used one spot, the liquid passed through the backing into the underlay and, in a house with boards rather than a solid floor, into the gap between them, and cleaning the carpet then treats the smallest part of the problem. We test with a light before quoting so you know whether you are buying a clean or a new underlay.

Our sofa has no cleaning label left on it. What do you do then?

We test rather than guess. A hidden panel, usually under a cushion or behind the base valance, gets a small controlled wetting and a white cloth pressed on it to see whether dye moves and whether the pile marks as it dries. That tells us whether it takes water based extraction or has to be treated with a solvent method. If it moves colour on the test patch we stop and tell you, because a label is missing far more often than a fabric is genuinely unknown.

Do you cover the whole of Carrington?

Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Carrington?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Carrington?

Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. Streets inside the old grid are short, narrow and parked both sides with no drives at all, so we stop where it is legal and carry in, and we group Carrington with Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields on the rota.
