Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Sherwood Rise homes
A single staircase carries every resident to their own front door, and the carpet on it is the cheapest the landlord could buy. On a hill, shoes bring grit up rather than along. Inside, furnished lets mean sofas and mattresses that came with the flat.
Two different jobs here, booked by different people. The first is the common staircase, which carries every resident of the building to their own front door and takes more traffic in a year than a family hall takes in five. It is on a hill, and grit off a pavement is sharp enough to saw at fibre every time somebody walks over it. Extraction is what takes the oily soil back out of the fibre base, and it is the difference between a stair carpet that is worn out and one that only looks it. The second job is inside the flats, where furnished lets mean a sofa and mattresses that arrived with the tenancy and have never once been cleaned by anybody who owned them.
Sherwood Rise sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly large three storey Victorian villas and bay fronted semis on the slope, most of them long since divided into self contained flats, with a run of smaller terraces at the lower end, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Sherwood Rise carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs
Drying is the constraint on a common staircase, because there is rarely a window on it. A converted villa often has one small pane on a half landing and nothing else, so moisture has nowhere to go and the hall smells damp for two days if the job is done wet. We keep moisture low, work from the top landing down so nobody has to cross finished treads, and leave an air mover running wherever there is a socket that will not trip anyone. Mornings beat afternoons for that reason. We also record the state of the nosings first, because a worn front edge on a tread is wear rather than dirt and it will not come back.
How a Sherwood Rise carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs
How the machine reaches the room decides how the job gets booked. Running a hose from a van at the kerb up a communal stair to a second floor flat means the front door of the building stands open while we work, and an open door to a shared entrance is not something the other households will thank you for. So either somebody stays on the door, or we work from a portable machine carried up, which is slower and means more filling and emptying at your sink. Either way, that decision needs making before the day rather than on it. Power is worth checking too, because a machine and a heater on the same tired circuit in a converted flat will find the weak point in it. Furniture is the other half of the planning. Small rooms mean everything has to go somewhere and there is no spare room to put it in, so we work in halves and need one clear area to start from. Morning slots are better, since the carpet then has the whole day to dry.
Who books it here
End of tenancy work dominates, because a converted villa holds four or five tenancies and each one ends on its own date. Landlords book a deep clean when a flat has turned over several times without one. Regular domestic work is smaller flats on a fortnightly slot, plus a monthly pass on the common stairs.
We run Sherwood Rise on the same round as Carrington, Forest Fields and New Basford.
What we check on every Sherwood Rise job
The dark line along the skirting is the detail worth understanding, because it is not dirt in the ordinary sense. Air gets pulled through the edge of the carpet where it meets the wall, or under a closed door, the pile acts as the filter, and what it traps is the fine soot and cooking soil suspended in the air of the flat. In buildings on a slope with traffic at the bottom of it, and in flats where people burn candles or cook without a working extractor, those grey bands turn up at every skirting and across each doorway. They are stubborn. They need a dedicated treatment worked along the line by hand rather than a pass with the wand, and they do not always come out completely, which we say before we start rather than after. Sealing the gap under the skirting is what stops them returning, and that belongs to whoever owns the building.
What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Also covered: Mattresses, HEPA vacuumed with low-moisture spot treatment
- Upholstery: Embedded hair lifted with a rubber brush
- Carpets: Hot water extraction at pressure
- Also covered: Pet urine, with enzymatic pre-treatment and extra dwell time
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Sherwood Rise
Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£35 to £60
Typical one-off in Sherwood Rise. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Single room | £35 to £60 |
| Hallway, stairs and landing | £45 to £85 |
| 2 bed flat, throughout | £75 to £175 |
| 3 bed house, throughout | £140 to £260 |
| 4 bed house, throughout | £200 to £350 |
Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Upholstery, 3 seat sofa | £45 to £90 |
| Mattress clean | £30 to £60 |
| Pet urine treatment, per spot | £15 to £40 |
| Rug, per square metre | £8 to £20 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

How often should the stair carpet in a converted house be done?
More often than a domestic staircase, because it is carrying several households rather than one. Once a year is the least that keeps it in reasonable condition, and twice suits a building where flats change hands frequently or where the front door gives straight onto the street. In most buildings the cost is shared between the flats through the service charge, which tends to make the arithmetic easier than the conversation about who books it.
The sofa came with the flat and I do not know what it is. Can you clean it?
We check before anything happens to it. There is normally a care label under a cushion or on the underside of the frame carrying a cleaning code, and that code decides whether we use water or a solvent. Plenty of budget upholstery in furnished lets carries a code that water will ring permanently, so guessing is an expensive way to find out. With no label at all we test somewhere out of view first and tell you what we found.
How long will it take to dry with no through draught?
Longer than in a house, so plan the day around it. We control how much moisture goes in, extract more than we lay down and leave an air mover running where there is a socket, but a small room with a sash painted shut and no cross ventilation is slow. Morning appointments help. So does keeping the heating on gently rather than turned right up, because warm still air holds moisture while moving air actually removes it.
One stain keeps coming back. Why does that happen?
Because something remains in the fibre below the depth that was cleaned. A spill soaks through the pile into the backing and the underlay, the surface gets cleaned, and as everything dries the rest travels back up and reappears in the same outline a few days later. That is wicking. It is solved by extracting properly through the backing and weighting a pad over it while it dries, not by scrubbing the top again. Tell us what was spilled and what was used on it.
Do you cover the whole of Sherwood Rise?
Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Sherwood Rise?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Sherwood Rise?
Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. The hill is the problem, and we group Sherwood Rise with Carrington, Forest Fields and New Basford on the rota.
