Deep Cleaning for Carrington homes
Small rooms decorated every few years since the 1830s, which means layers: gloss over gloss, emulsion over paper, paint straight onto kitchen tile. What a degreaser does to old paintwork decides how a deep clean here is run.
Deep cleans on this stock run straight into paint. A cottage decorated every few years since it was built carries a lot of layers, and on the older ones those layers include gloss over gloss on the skirtings and door linings, emulsion over wallpaper, and in the kitchen a coat of paint taken straight over tile or brick. All of that changes what cleaning can actually do. A degreaser that behaves on a modern satin finish will soften an old gloss and take it off in a strip if it is left to sit, and paint over paper lifts at the seams the moment it gets wet. So the first job is establishing what we are working on, room by room, and telling you where the answer is cleaning and where the answer is a decorator.
Carrington sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly small two up two down cottages built to one pattern in short straight streets from the 1830s, many with painted brick fronts, and larger bay fronted houses on the roads climbing away, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Carrington deep cleaning jobs
The tops of the wall units are where the hours go. In a low kitchen they sit close under the ceiling, nobody has ever seen them, and what is up there is not really dust: it is airborne fat that has collected dust and gone hard. It will not wipe. It wants a degreaser given time to work, a plastic scraper on the worst of it, then a rinse pass. The built in cupboards in the alcoves are the other one. They are original, they never get emptied, and the bottom shelf holds a fine pale grit that has been coming out of the plaster behind them for decades.
How a Carrington deep cleaning job actually runs
A deep clean in a house this size is a logistics problem before it is a cleaning problem. There is no garage, no utility room and usually no spare bedroom, so everything that comes out of a cupboard has to go somewhere in a house that is already full. We work room by room and put a room back together before opening the next one, rather than emptying the ground floor into the hall and hoping. If the weather is dry the yard takes the overflow for a few hours, and if it is not, we plan for that instead of discovering it. The cellar is the other thing worth agreeing beforehand. Many of these houses still have one under the front room, reached by a door off the hall or the kitchen, down steep stone steps with no natural light. We will clean the cellar head, the steps and the handrail, and we will take a light down there and tell you honestly what we find. What we will not do is treat a cellar packed with stored belongings as a cleaning job, because it is a sorting job first.
Who books it here
The old part of this was laid out in one go, so a run of houses is genuinely identical: same frontage, same room sizes, same window openings, same box room over the stairs. Learn one and you have learned the row, which is why rounds here run street by street rather than jumping about.
We run Carrington on the same round as Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields.
What we check on every Carrington job
Nearly every room in these houses has a chimney breast, and nearly every one of those flues has been blocked off with a plate and a small vent left in it. That vent is doing exactly what it was fitted to do, which is let air move up a shaft lined with a century of soot, and the evidence collects in a fine grey brown line on the wall directly above the grille and on the top edge of the breast where the ceiling meets it. Wipe it with anything wet and it smears a long way sideways, because soot is oily rather than dusty. It wants dry removal first, brush and vacuum, then a wash. The other place it lands is the grout on an original tiled hearth, where it has settled into the joints and darkened them unevenly, so the tiles look sound and the lines between them do not.
What the deep cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Bathrooms: Shower head soaked or bagged with descaler
- Kitchen, which is about 40% of the time: Dishwasher filter and spray arms
- Kitchen, which is about 40% of the time: Inside, on top of and underneath all cupboards
- Kitchen, which is about 40% of the time: Oven interior, racks, side runners, door glass and grill pan
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full deep cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What deep cleaning costs in Carrington
A one-off deep clean, priced as a job rather than by the hour. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£165 to £280
Typical one-off in Carrington. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Studio | £110 to £180 |
| 1 bedroom | £135 to £220 |
| 2 bedrooms | £165 to £280 |
| 3 bedrooms | £220 to £350 |
| 4 bedrooms | £300 to £460 |
Our cost research puts a one-off deep clean of a two to three bedroom home at £165 to £350, which is the anchor the rest of this table is built around.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Single oven deep clean | £45 to £80 |
| Double oven | £70 to £110 |
| Range cooker | £80 to £130 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Will a deep clean sort out the paintwork, or does it need repainting?
Some of both, and it is better said at the start than discovered later. Dirt, hand marks and cooking film come off paintwork that is sound. What does not come off is yellowing on old gloss, chalking on emulsion gone powdery, or a surface where a previous coat went on over grease and never keyed. We wash a test area in each room, show you the result, and let you decide where cleaning stops being worth it.
How long does a deep clean take in a two bedroom cottage?
Plan on a full day rather than a morning. The jobs that take the time are fixed rather than proportional: an oven is an oven, a bathroom needs its contact time whatever size it is, and the kitchen ceiling and unit tops in a small back extension are worse than in a large kitchen rather than better. If the day is not enough, we would rather split it across two visits by room than rush the second half of one.
Does a deep clean include the chimney itself?
No, and the difference matters. Sweeping a flue is a trade with its own equipment and its own certificate, and we are not it. What we clean is everything the flue has put into the room: the vent and the plate, the face of the breast, the mantel, the hearth and the tiles. If you are thinking of opening a fireplace back up, have it swept and checked first and book the clean afterwards, because opening one puts a lot of loose soot into the room.
We still have the original quarry tiles in the kitchen. Anything to know?
Yes, and it changes the method. Floors of that age were usually laid straight onto the ground with no membrane under them, so they draw moisture up and they never fully dry. Flooding them with water makes that worse and takes days to disappear. We use very little water, no strong acid, and we do not seal them, because a sealant over a floor that breathes traps the damp underneath and pushes it into the skirting and the plaster instead.
Do you cover the whole of Carrington?
Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does deep cleaning cost in Carrington?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how long it has been since the last one, the state of the oven, and how many bathrooms need descaling. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start deep cleaning in Carrington?
Within a week or two normally, longer in March and April and through November when everyone books at once. Streets inside the old grid are short, narrow and parked both sides with no drives at all, so we stop where it is legal and carry in, and we group Carrington with Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields on the rota.
