Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Carlton homes
Family homes with carpet through the hall, stairs and landing, which is the highest-traffic run in any house. Annual extraction there is what gets a mid-range carpet to the top of its five to seven year life rather than the bottom.
The hall, stairs and landing run in a Carlton interwar semi is usually one continuous fitted carpet, turned around a quarter landing or a set of winders at the bottom, and it is the hardest working carpet in the house. Everything that comes through the front door crosses it and everything going upstairs uses it. On a fitted run like that the wear is never even. It concentrates on the front edge of each tread and on the outside of the turn, where feet take the corner. Cleaning it as one piece rather than as three separate areas is the only way to avoid a visible line where one section was done and the next was not.
Carlton sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. The housing here is mostly Victorian terraces along Carlton Hill and interwar semis spreading north toward Gedling, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
What we run into on Carlton carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs
Winders, the wedge shaped treads at the bottom of a turn, are the awkward part and the reason a stair run is hand tool work. A standard wand will not sit flat on them, and the carpet is frequently cut and joined right at that point, so a heavy wet pass can lift an edge held only by gripper and adhesive. We work them with an upholstery tool and less moisture, and check the seam before we start. On a rented property we will also say honestly when a run has gone past cleaning and into replacement.
How a Carlton carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs
How the machine gets to the room decides a lot of what happens here. There is no drive on the terraces and the side roads fill up, so this is portable machine work carried in rather than a hose run from a van parked outside. Fresh water comes off your kitchen tap, waste goes down the kitchen sink or the outside gulley, and the power lead runs from a socket in the room being cleaned rather than from the street. In a terrace the front room sockets are frequently on the same circuit as the kitchen, so we check that before starting rather than tripping the board halfway through a pass. Drying is the other local constraint. A small terrace has almost no cross ventilation once the front door is shut, so we open front and back together for an hour, put the heating on low rather than high, and book these jobs earlier in the day so the floor is walkable by the evening. A semi with a through lounge moves air far better and the same work dries in less time.
Who books it here
An even split between regular domestic cleaning in the interwar semis and end of tenancy work on the rented terraces along Carlton Hill.
We run Carlton on the same round as Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold.
What we check on every Carlton job
Before anything wet: fibre identification, a colourfast test somewhere hidden, and a look at the back of the carpet at a doorway or a cupboard corner to see whether it is wool rich or polypropylene. That matters here, because the rented terraces are usually laid with polypropylene, which will take a bleach based spotter that would pull the colour straight out of a wool twist, and which flattens rather than soils, so a good part of what looks like dirt is crushed pile that grooming lifts. On upholstery the care label under the seat cushion comes first and its W, S, WS or X code decides everything after it. A sofa sitting in a front bay usually has one faded arm, which is sun damage and does not clean out. Bonded pet hair is lifted with a rubber brush before any water goes near it, because wet hair mats.
What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- Carpets: Pre-spray suited to the soiling, with proper dwell time
- Carpets: Neutralising rinse, so no sticky detergent residue is left to attract soil
- Upholstery: Vacuumed with an upholstery tool, including down the sides and under cushions
- Upholstery: Low moisture, because the foam underneath holds water for days
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Carlton
Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
| Property | Typical one-off |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Single room | £35 to £60 |
| Hallway, stairs and landing | £45 to £85 |
| 2 bed flat, throughout | £75 to £175 |
| 3 bed house, throughout | £140 to £260 |
| 4 bed house, throughout | £200 to £350 |
Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Upholstery, 3 seat sofa | £45 to £90 |
| Mattress clean | £30 to £60 |
| Pet urine treatment, per spot | £15 to £40 |
| Rug, per square metre | £8 to £20 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Can you clean just the hall, stairs and landing?
Yes, and it is one of the most common bookings we take in Carlton. It is priced as its own job rather than by room count, because stairs are slow work. If you are having other rooms done in the same visit it works out better than booking it separately later, since every visit carries a minimum charge of its own.
Our landlord is talking about replacing it. Is cleaning worth it first?
Often, and it is a cheap way to find out. If the pile is grey and flattened, that is bonded soil and it comes back looking substantially better. If the tread edges have gone pale and fuzzy, the fibre tips have abraded and no cleaning restores them. We will look at it and tell you which before anyone spends anything.
Can you take water from our kitchen and empty the machine into the sink?
Yes, and that is the normal arrangement in a terrace with no drive. We fill from the hot tap, run the waste through a strainer so nothing solid goes down, and use the outside gulley instead where the recovered water is greasy. All we need is a working hot tap and a socket. If the kitchen is mid refit or the water is off, tell us, because that is the one thing that stops the job.
We have wool downstairs and something synthetic upstairs. Same treatment?
No, and doing it the same way is how carpets get damaged. Wool wants a near neutral pre-spray, less moisture and a careful rinse, because high alkalinity yellows it and over-wetting can shrink it. Synthetic pile takes a stronger, more alkaline pre-spray and more water without complaint. We test both, mix separately, and clean them as two jobs in one visit.
Do you cover the whole of Carlton?
Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Carlton?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Carlton?
Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. On-street, usually available, and we group Carlton with Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold on the rota.
