Our front door opens into the living room. Does that change anything?
It changes where the time goes rather than how long the visit takes. The front of the room needs more attention and the hall time goes into it instead. A barrier mat immediately inside the door is worth more in a Carlton Hill terrace than almost anywhere, because there is no hallway to catch anything and shoes reach the carpet in one step.
Why does the front room always look dirtier than the back?

What adds time is the step or threshold between the old back wall and the new floor, which traps grit along its whole length and needs a nozzle rather than a mop, and the extra glazed doors, which get finger marked far more than a window does.
