Domestic Cleaning for Carlton homes

Interwar semis spreading toward Gedling, mostly fortnightly, mostly family homes. Straightforward properties where the quote holds from the description without a visit.

Carlton splits into two regular cleaning jobs and they behave differently. The terraces along the hill open more or less straight off the pavement, sometimes into a small lobby and sometimes into the front room itself, with the road directly outside. Traffic film settles on the front window sill, the skirting beneath it and the top of anything on that wall, and it is a greasy grey rather than ordinary dust, so it wants a detergent wipe rather than a dry cloth. The interwar semis spreading toward Gedling are the more conventional job, with a hall to catch what comes in and a stair carpet doing the work instead. We do not clean them the same way or quote them the same way.

Carlton sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. An even split between regular domestic cleaning in the interwar semis and end of tenancy work on the rented terraces along Carlton Hill.

What we run into on Carlton domestic cleaning jobs

In a front room that opens onto the pavement, the first half metre of floor is effectively a different surface in terms of what lands on it. Where there is carpet, it greys quickly. Where nets or a blind are up, they collect the same film and are worth washing twice a year rather than being left until they look grey against the glass. We also check the letterbox draught, because a plate that no longer seals pulls road dust straight through and leaves a fan of grit on the mat and the skirting either side of the door.

How a Carlton domestic cleaning job actually runs

Most of our regular work here is in the semis on the Gedling side, and the visit runs back to front rather than top to bottom. The kitchen sits at the rear, often in a later extension a step down from the hall, and the back door is the one the household actually uses, so mud arrives there and never at the front. We start upstairs while the bathroom is still airing, do the landing, then work down and finish in the kitchen, because it is the room most likely to still be in use when we arrive. Getting in is the other practical matter. We park on the side roads rather than on the hill itself, so a cleaner arrives on foot with a caddy and a vacuum, and a key safe by the back door saves a few minutes at both ends of every visit. Fortnightly slots sit best mid morning, once the school run has cleared the streets and before anyone is back for lunch. Bin day matters more than people expect, because a kitchen bin emptied the night before collection stays empty for a fortnight.

Who books it here

On the practical side: On-street, usually available. Carlton Hill itself is busy, so we work from the side roads.

We run Carlton on the same round as Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold.

What we check on every Carlton job

In a semi of this age the fixed points we check every visit are the ones that go wrong quietly. The airing cupboard holds a hot water cylinder in a fair number of these houses, and the slatted shelves above it collect lint that ends up on clean bedding, so they get wiped rather than admired. The cupboard under the stairs usually holds the consumer unit, the meter and the vacuum, and its floor is bare boards nobody has swept since the last power cut. Back door thresholds gather grit in the weather bar groove, and that grit is what grinds into the kitchen floor. We check the bathroom extractor grille for a fur of dust, because a blocked one is why the mirror stays fogged. The fridge handle, the bin lid, the light switch by the back door and the newel post at the foot of the stairs are the touch points a family house handles most and cleans least.

What the domestic cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Bathrooms: Floor cleaned
  • Kitchen: Microwave interior
  • Bedrooms and living areas: Mirrors and glass
  • Bathrooms: Toilet inside and out, including the seat, hinges and base

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full domestic cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What domestic cleaning costs in Carlton

Regular domestic cleaning, per visit, at a typical company rate. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

PropertyTypical per visit
1 bed flat£40 to £50
2 bed£50 to £70
3 bed£60 to £80
4 bed£80 to £100
5 bed£100 to £120

A fortnightly clean of a two bedroom home works out around £1,560 to £1,820 a year. Weekly is roughly double.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Regular domestic, per hour£17 to £25
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Our front door opens into the living room. Does that change anything?

It changes where the time goes rather than how long the visit takes. The front of the room needs more attention and the hall time goes into it instead. A barrier mat immediately inside the door is worth more in a Carlton Hill terrace than almost anywhere, because there is no hallway to catch anything and shoes reach the carpet in one step.

Why does the front room always look dirtier than the back?

Because it faces the road. Traffic leaves a fine oily film that bonds to glass, sills and paintwork, and it builds faster than household dust does. It shows on a light coloured skirting under a front window before anywhere else in the house. It is not a sign the room is being missed, it simply needs a wet wipe rather than a duster.

We are on a side road with no driveway. Does the cleaner need a space outside?

No. Everything a regular visit needs fits in one load carried from wherever there is a space, so a full street costs you nothing. It only becomes a factor on the jobs that involve a machine, which is carpet work and floor work rather than a fortnightly clean. If your road has a resident permit scheme, tell us when you book so we know to look further out rather than circling.

Half the house is the original layout and half is a rear extension. Does that add time?

A little, and not where people assume. The extension is usually the kitchen, so it adds hard floor rather than rooms, and hard floor is quick. What adds time is the step or threshold between the old back wall and the new floor, which traps grit along its whole length and needs a nozzle rather than a mop, and the extra glazed doors, which get finger marked far more than a window does.

Do you cover the whole of Carlton?

Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does domestic cleaning cost in Carlton?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the bathroom count more than the bedroom count, how often we come, and whether there are pets. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start domestic cleaning in Carlton?

Usually within a week for a regular rota, and we will tell you the day rather than a window. On-street, usually available, and we group Carlton with Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold on the rota.
