Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for Old Basford homes

Terrace staircases here turn at the top on winder treads, which are wedge shaped and cannot be cleaned with a wand at all. Those go tread by tread with a hand tool, which is slow and is why stairs are quoted apart.

Stairs are the job here more often than rooms are. A terrace staircase runs straight up from the living room and then turns at the top on winder treads, which are wedge shaped, narrower at one end than a hand tool is wide, and impossible to reach with a wand. It is slow work and it is where the dirt is, because there is no hall to catch anything: the front door opens into the room the stairs come out of, so street grit goes onto the bottom treads within a step or two of arriving. The semis are more conventional, with a hall carpet and a straight flight, and they clean the way any postwar house does.

Old Basford sits in NG6, under Nottingham City Council. The housing here is mostly nineteenth century terraces built for the hosiery and lace trades, with postwar council semis filling the gaps left by clearance, and small modern closes on former factory land, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Old Basford carpet & upholstery cleaning jobs

Drying is the constraint in a terrace rather than the cleaning. There is one door front and back, the rooms are small, and the staircase in the middle of the house pulls damp air upstairs rather than out of it. So we work at lower moisture than the same carpet would get in a bigger house, extract twice on the traffic lane, and put an air mover at the foot of the stairs facing up the flight. The other thing worth knowing is that the underlay in front of where a fire used to be is often thinner and older than the rest, because it was cut round a hearth, and it wets through faster.

How an Old Basford carpet & upholstery cleaning job actually runs

Upholstery in these front rooms usually has to be cleaned where it stands. A three piece suite in a terrace living room went in through the front door with the feet off, and it is not coming out again for a cleaning visit, so we work round it: pull it forward off the wall, clean it in place, and put it back once it is dry rather than while it is damp. That last part matters here because so many of these sofas sit against an outside wall, which is the coldest surface in the room and the slowest place for anything to dry. The postwar houses give more room to move and the suites tend to be newer, so they behave more predictably. Whichever it is, we want to know before the visit what the suite is covered in and whether the covers come off, because a loose cover, a fixed back and a leather frame are three different jobs and only one of them can be decided on the doorstep.

Who books it here

Regular fortnightly work in the owner occupied semis, and a steady run of landlord turnarounds on the terraces, a lot of which are rented rather than lived in by their owners. Deep cleans come third and cluster after a sale, when the carpet has come up in an empty house and nobody expected what was under it.

We run Old Basford on the same round as New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood.

What we check on every Old Basford job

The deck under the cushions is where the evidence is on any sofa that has lived in a house with no hall. Lift the seat cushions and there is grit in the crease at the back of the deck, brought in on shoes and worked down there by everybody who has sat on it. Vacuuming that out with a crevice tool comes first, because wetting grit just makes a paste that works into the fabric. The arms and the headrest area are the other half. Hair oils and hand contact leave a darker patch that reads as wear until it is cleaned, and on an older suite the fabric there has usually had more sun on it as well, so we test in a hidden place first and tell you what is soil and what has already faded. Airflow across the arms shortens the drying considerably.

What the carpet & upholstery cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Also covered: Mattresses, HEPA vacuumed with low-moisture spot treatment
  • Upholstery: Embedded hair lifted with a rubber brush
  • Carpets: Hot water extraction at pressure
  • Also covered: Pet urine, with enzymatic pre-treatment and extra dwell time

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full carpet & upholstery cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Old Basford property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What carpet & upholstery cleaning costs in Old Basford

Hot water extraction, priced by room or by property. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£35 to £60

Typical one-off in Old Basford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical one-off
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Single room£35 to £60
Hallway, stairs and landing£45 to £85
2 bed flat, throughout£75 to £175
3 bed house, throughout£140 to £260
4 bed house, throughout£200 to £350

Stairs are priced separately from rooms because they are slow and cannot be done with a standard wand.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Upholstery, 3 seat sofa£45 to £90
Mattress clean£30 to £60
Pet urine treatment, per spot£15 to £40
Rug, per square metre£8 to £20

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Questions

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaningin Old Basford

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Can the winder treads at the top of the stairs actually be cleaned?

Yes, one at a time with a hand tool worked from the wide end in. It takes longer per tread than the straight part of the flight, which is why stairs are quoted separately from rooms rather than measured as floor area. The riser above each winder gets done at the same time, because on a turn that is the part your shoe scuffs, and it usually looks worse than the tread does.

The carpet just inside the front door is darker than the rest of the room. Will it come back?

Usually a good part of it. Two things are happening in that patch: bonded soil, which extraction lifts, and abrasion, where the grit has scratched the tips of the fibres so they scatter light differently. The first comes out. The second does not, and no amount of cleaning puts a fibre tip back. We will tell you which you have before we start, and in a house with no hall it is often some of both.

How long before we can use the room again?

You can walk on a cleaned carpet in clean socks fairly soon, but leave shoes off and keep furniture off it until it is properly dry, which in a small terrace room with limited airflow takes longer than the same carpet in an open plan house. Upholstery is the slower of the two. Sitting on a damp seat cushion presses moisture back down into the foam and undoes the extraction, so we would rather you gave it the rest of the day.

Do we need to move the furniture out first?

No, but the more that is off the floor the better the result. We shift what is safe for two people to shift and we work around anything heavy, sliding it and putting protectors under the feet where the floor will be damp. Beds, pianos and full bookcases stay where they are and we clean up to them. If you want the whole floor done wall to wall, clear the small items beforehand and say so when you book.

Do you cover the whole of Old Basford?

Yes, all of NG6 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does carpet & upholstery cleaning cost in Old Basford?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the room count, whether stairs are included, the fibre type, and whether there is pet urine to treat. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start carpet & upholstery cleaning in Old Basford?

Within a week usually, and we would rather do it alongside a deep clean than as a separate visit. On-street throughout, and the terraced rows have shared rear entries that are frequently gated with a lock nobody has the key to any more, and we group Old Basford with New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood on the rota.
