Mattress Cleaning for Bulwell homes
Beds do not turn on a terrace staircase here. The flight rises straight out of the living room to a doorway at the head, so a double goes up on its edge, and everything after that happens in the room it stands in.
Two buyers here, and the timing separates them more than the work does. The rented terraces near the centre go to households and working tenants rather than students, so a void can fall in any month, and a mattress clean usually arrives attached to one: the bed is staying, the tenant is not, and somebody has to decide whether it is fit to let again. The other half is owner occupiers on the estates, who book one bed and give the reason on the doorstep: a new baby in that room, somebody ill through the winter, or a bed bought when the house was furnished and never touched since. Furnished flats along the tram corridor sit with the first group, because the mattress belongs to the landlord and not to whoever is sleeping on it.
Bulwell sits in NG6, under Nottingham City Council. A market town centre that happens to be inside the city. Small commercial units above and behind the shops make up a fair share of the work.
What we run into on Bulwell mattress cleaning jobs
In a terrace back bedroom the bed almost always stands against the coldest wall in the house, and that is where the evidence is. The edge of the mattress nearest that wall is the one that feels cool and slightly damp to the back of a hand, the ticking on that side spots before anything else does, and the wall behind the headboard often carries the same pattern at the same height. That is condensation rather than soil, and no amount of cleaning touches the cause. We report it, and we leave the bed pulled a few inches off the wall, because air behind it does more than any product will.
How a Bulwell mattress cleaning job actually runs
These are morning bookings for a reason. The bed has to be dry before anyone sleeps in it, four to eight hours ventilated is normal, and a back bedroom in a terrace does not ventilate on its own. One open window in a room with a wall on three sides is a vent rather than a draught, so the front bedroom window goes open as well and the doors between them stay ajar, which is fine in June and a conversation in January. In winter we would rather run the heating low and keep the window on the latch than open everything up and cool the fabric down, because a cold mattress gives moisture back slowly. Access is otherwise simple: the machine is portable, runs off a socket in the room and fills from the kitchen tap, so nothing comes off the van except an air mover. What we do need is room to work. One long side and the foot of the bed clear, wardrobe doors able to open, and whatever is stored under the bed out before we arrive rather than during. In a let with several bedrooms we work from the far room back toward the stairs.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly Victorian terraces around the market place, postwar estates toward Rise Park, and newer development along the tram corridor, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run Bulwell on the same round as New Basford, Aspley and Hucknall.
What we check on every Bulwell job
The base tells you as much as the mattress does. In the let terraces it is usually a storage divan, drawers or a lift up ottoman, and the inside has never been emptied by anybody: dust, hair, a line of grit along the seams and often paperwork belonging to somebody two tenancies ago. In the estate bedrooms it is more often a slatted frame with the household's overflow stored underneath, all of which has to come out before anything can be vacuumed. Labels are checked before water is. A one sided mattress with a pillow top is cleaned on the sleeping face and stays that way, and turning it is not the favour it looks like. The findings that get named rather than treated are a sag through the middle third, ticking that has been soaked at some point and dried with a tidemark across it, and a protector that has perished and started to shed into the fabric under it.
What the mattress cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- The mattress itself: Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
- The rest of the bed: Protector or topper handled, washed or refitted as the label allows
- The rest of the bed: The gap behind and under the bed, which nothing reaches once the frame is in place
- The rest of the bed: Fabric headboard cleaned to the same standard as the mattress
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Bulwell property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What mattress cleaning costs in Bulwell
Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£40 to £70
Typical per mattress in Bulwell. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per mattress |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Cot or child's mattress | £15 to £30 |
| Single | £25 to £45 |
| Double | £40 to £70 |
| King | £50 to £85 |
| Super king | £60 to £100 |
One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Divan base or headboard, each | £25 to £50 |
| Set stain treatment, per area | £10 to £30 |
| Deodorising treatment | £10 to £25 |
| Second and later mattresses, same visit | 20% to 30% less each |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
There is black spotting on the side of the mattress against the outside wall. Can that be cleaned off?
Surface growth lifts and the smell usually goes with it. The staining often does not, because the mould has coloured the ticking rather than sat on it, and once it has reached the filling the bed is a replacement decision rather than a cleaning one. We can usually say at the door which one you are dealing with. Either way the wall behind it is the real problem, and that is heating and ventilation rather than anything we can sell you.
The bed cannot get off the landing. Is that a problem?
No, because none of it needs to leave the room. We work around the bed where it stands, which wants about a metre clear on one long side and at the foot, so a chair or a wash basket moved out beforehand helps more than you would think. The mattress is stood on its edge against the frame to reach the second face, and it goes back down before the air mover runs.
We are reletting and there are three beds. Clean or replace?
We look at all three before starting and tell you which are worth it. Ticking marked but sound, no dip through the sleeping area and nothing that has soaked down into the filling, that one gets cleaned. A bed whose edge gives way when you sit on it, or that has been sagging into a failed frame, is past the point of cleaning and we will say so rather than do it and invoice you. A protector fitted afterwards is what stops the next tenancy repeating it.
It is January and the room is cold. Will it actually dry?
Yes, with the heating on low and the air moving, and it takes longer than the same bed in July. We keep the moisture down to begin with by pulling more dry passes than wet ones, run an air mover across the surface, and tell you the hour it can be made up again rather than leaving you to guess. Where that time lands in the evening, the honest answer is that the bed is for the following night.
Do you cover the whole of Bulwell?
Yes, all of NG6 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does mattress cleaning cost in Bulwell?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Bulwell?
Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Market days fill the centre, and we group Bulwell with New Basford, Aspley and Hucknall on the rota.
