Mattress Cleaning for Gedling homes

Two drying problems on one round. The older semis have a cold back bedroom over an unheated kitchen. The estate houses are sealed tight, warm and still, so moisture put into a mattress has nowhere to leave.

What decides this job here is not the bed, it is what the room will do with the water afterwards. Less goes in than a carpet takes, but it still has to leave. In the interwar semis the awkward room is the back bedroom sitting over a kitchen nobody heats, and in winter a surface that felt dry at four in the afternoon is cool and damp again by bedtime. The houses on the reclaimed ground have the opposite fault. They are built to hold air in, so opening a window achieves less than it does in older stock and there is no draught through the house to carry moisture off. One room wants heat, the other wants air moved deliberately, and the slot is booked accordingly.

Gedling sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. A village core, two waves of estate housing and a new development on reclaimed colliery ground, all within a walk of each other. A three bedroom semi here can mean a house finished before the war or one finished in the last few years, and the two want different products and different hours.

What we run into on Gedling mattress cleaning jobs

Storage beds are the recurring find in the newer bedrooms, because a room that size has nowhere else to put anything. Lift the platform on its gas struts and the underside of the mattress, the fabric lined tray and whatever has been kept in there have spent the year sealed in one unventilated box under a sleeping body. Spare duvets come out smelling of the room rather than of washing, and a fine grey deposit has gathered along the tray seams off the bedding itself. The tray goes through the machine while the platform is held up, and we would rather what was stored in it came out and aired than went straight back down.

How a Gedling mattress cleaning job actually runs

Getting to the bed is most of the planning. On the estate the staircase turns on winders with a handrail either side, the landing is short, and a modern double will not come round that turn on edge without dragging along a ceiling, so we work in the room and the frame stays where it is. That means clearing a strip of floor either side of the bed before we arrive, which takes five minutes and saves a great deal of shuffling. The older semis are easier upstairs and harder outside, since a fair number have a flight of steps up from the pavement to the front door and the machine and the air mover go up those by hand. Parking is the usual estate story, narrow roads and visitor bays gone by mid morning, so tell us what to aim for. Almost all of this work here is a household's own bed rather than a landlord's, so somebody is normally in, and the useful conversation about what will lighten rather than clear happens before we start instead of at the end.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly interwar and postwar semis on the streets off Arnold Lane and Shelford Road, a small older core around the church, and newer estate housing built on the reclaimed colliery ground, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Gedling on the same round as Carlton, Netherfield and Mapperley.

What we check on every Gedling job

A house move produces a new bed, and on the newer plots that bed arrived rolled up in a box. Those are foam through their full depth rather than sprung, and the care label on nearly all of them says spot clean, which is not a manufacturer being cautious. Foam takes up water like a sponge and has no ventilation path, so anything driven into the surface has gone deeper than it can be drawn back out of, and a soaked core will not dry inside a bedroom at any temperature. What that mattress gets instead is a full HEPA vacuum over both faces, the sides and the seams, targeted treatment on the marks with the least moisture that works, and honest wording about the result. The label sits on the side seam, sometimes under the piping, and we read it in front of you rather than deciding for you. Where it has been cut off, we test in a hidden area and treat it as foam until proved otherwise.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The rest of the bed: Skirting and the wall line behind the headboard
  • Stains and odour: Cold treatment for protein: blood, sweat, milk and vomit
  • The rest of the bed: The gap behind and under the bed, which nothing reaches once the frame is in place
  • The mattress itself: Air movement across the surface before we leave

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Gedling

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Gedling. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Can we sleep in the bed the same night?

In most rooms yes, if the appointment is a morning one. We put in the least moisture the soiling allows, finish with more dry passes than wet ones and run air across the surface before leaving. Strip the bed and leave it open rather than making it up at teatime, because a fitted sheet over a mattress that is not quite dry traps exactly what we have spent the morning removing.

The bedroom window only opens on a small vent. Does that matter?

It matters more than people think, and it is why a newer house is not automatically the easier job. A restrictor or a trickle vent gives you very little air change, so moisture sits in the room instead of leaving it. We bring an air mover and work it across the surface rather than relying on the window, and we ask for the heating on low rather than high, because warm still air holds moisture rather than carrying it away.

There is a mark we have had for years. Will it come out?

Probably not entirely, and you should hear that before rather than after. Old body fluid marks and the yellowing that comes with them have oxidised into the fibre, so they lighten rather than clear. What can be dealt with properly is the smell, because that comes from crystals a detergent leaves behind and an enzyme treatment breaks down. We give a verdict on each mark at the start, and where a mattress is past the point of helping we will say so plainly.

Should the protector be cleaned as well?

Have it off with the bedding rather than leaving it on the bed. Most are machine washable and a great many have never been washed at all, which defeats the point of owning one, since a saturated protector simply passes everything on to the mattress beneath. We look at it while the bed is stripped and tell you whether it is still doing its job. If it is backed with a membrane, hot washing and tumbling will have hardened that, and it is a replacement.

Do you cover the whole of Gedling?

Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Gedling?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Gedling?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Mostly straightforward, because the older semis have a drive or a verge to pull onto, and we group Gedling with Carlton, Netherfield and Mapperley on the rota.
