Mattress Cleaning for Arnold homes

Owner occupiers who have slept on the same bed for years, in three bedrooms of wildly unequal size. The box room over the stair bulkhead is barely wider than a single, so the mattress works on its side against the wall.

This work is almost all owner occupied here and almost always one bed rather than a batch, and the reason is usually specific: a child who has been ill, a room that has quietly become the guest room, or a bed being assessed before a downsizing move. What shapes the visit is the room it is in. A postwar semi gives you a double bedroom over the bay, a second over the kitchen, and a third over the stairs that is barely wider than the bed standing in it. Where a loft has been converted, and a fair number here have, the bed is up a second flight steeper and narrower than the first, so nothing at all comes out of that room.

Arnold sits in NG5, under Gedling Borough Council. Mostly straightforward family homes on a weekly or fortnightly rota. Good parking, which sounds trivial and is one of the reasons slots here are easy to keep to time.

What we run into on Arnold mattress cleaning jobs

The box room dictates the method. The ceiling drops over the stair bulkhead at the foot of the bed, the bed sits under the window with a hand's width down one side and nothing down the other, and there is no clear floor to lay a mattress on. So it goes on its side against the long wall and both faces are worked vertically, which is slower and keeps the room usable that night. What turns up behind those beds is consistent: the wall above the skirting scuffed where the mattress has rubbed against it for years, and a cold outside corner in a room facing the back garden that has never had the radiator on.

How an Arnold mattress cleaning job actually runs

These are nearly all single bed bookings in an occupied family house, so the visit is short and it has to be timed around the room being usable that night. An hour is realistic for a double once the bed is stripped, longer where a set stain needs treating on its own. What we ask for beforehand is the floor around the bed cleared and the bedding already off and in the machine, because a slot spent moving toys and books is a slot not spent on the mattress. Access to the room is the variable. The stairs in a postwar semi turn at the top onto a small landing, and a king mattress will not swing round that turn without catching the newel post, so anything bigger than a double is worked in the room rather than moved out of it. Where a loft has been converted the second flight is steeper again and nothing comes down it at all. Parking is not a problem, so the air movers arrive with everything else on one trip and drying starts the moment the last pass is finished.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly postwar semis and estates around the town centre, with older cottages near Front Street and newer developments on the edges, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Arnold on the same round as Sherwood, Carlton and Hucknall.

What we check on every Arnold job

Everything checkable happens before any moisture goes near the bed. The label comes off the side seam and gets read, because most memory foam and a good deal of what is sold as hybrid says spot clean, and that decides the entire method. A colourfast test goes along the base seam where a valance covers it. Both faces, all four sides, the piping and the handle wells are vacuumed through a HEPA machine first, and the handle wells are where the volume actually is. Then the parts of the bed nobody books: the top platform of the divan under the mattress, the sides of the base, the inside of both drawers, the gap behind the headboard and the wall it has been resting against, and the floor under the bed, which in a room this size has not been reached since the frame went in. Anything that will lighten rather than clear is said out loud first.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The mattress itself: Pre-treatment matched to the soiling, with proper dwell time
  • The rest of the bed: Divan base sides and top platform vacuumed and spot cleaned
  • The mattress itself: Low moisture agitation, with extraction only where the soiling justifies it
  • The rest of the bed: Fabric headboard cleaned to the same standard as the mattress

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Arnold

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Arnold. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The bed is in the converted loft. Can it still be done up there?

Yes, and it is done in place. A king mattress will not come down a converted stair without taking plaster off the turn, so we work in the room with the bed pulled away from the wall and air moving across the surface. What we do need is the roof window opened or a fan running. A loft room is the warmest in the house and the most likely to hold that moisture overnight.

How long before we can make the bed up again?

Four to eight hours in a warm room with air moving, and longer in a back bedroom facing the garden in January. That is exactly why the method runs more dry passes than wet ones. If the room is cold, say so at booking rather than on the day. It changes the approach to a drier one, and it changes whether treating a set stain is worth doing at all.

The mattress has been on the same divan since we bought the house. Is cleaning it worth doing?

That depends on the base as much as the mattress. Sight along the middle third from the foot of the bed. If there is a dip, or if the base underneath has a broken slat or a collapsed sprung edge, the mattress has been badly supported for years and cleaning it will not change how it sleeps. If the base is sound and the ticking is intact, it is worth doing, and the perspiration tidemarks will lighten considerably. We say which before starting rather than after.

The back bedroom is cold and faces the garden. Does that rule it out in winter?

No, it changes the method. A cold room with no through draught means less moisture goes in and more dry passes come out, and it means running air across the surface for longer before we leave. Put the heating on in that room for a couple of hours before we arrive and leave the door open afterwards. What we will not do is make the bed up for you, and you get a time before which it should not be made up.

Do you cover the whole of Arnold?

Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Arnold?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Arnold?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Good, and we group Arnold with Sherwood, Carlton and Hucknall on the rota.
