Mattress Cleaning for Carlton homes
Much of the terraced stock is let, so the bed belongs to the landlord and gets cleaned between tenancies in an empty house with the heating off. The semis are family beds, cleaned around the people sleeping in them that night.
A good share of the terraces on this side are let, which changes whose bed it is. A landlord's mattress gets cleaned between tenancies rather than as household maintenance, in an empty property with the heating off and every window shut, and that is the worst drying condition there is, so we ask for the heating to go back on the day before rather than the morning of. The label has often gone as well, cut off by somebody at some point, which takes the care code and the construction with it, so the method has to come from a hidden test and from how the fill behaves under pressure instead of from print. The owner occupied semis are the opposite job: a bed in nightly use, cleaned around the family sleeping in it.
Carlton sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. A lot of the terraced stock is rented, so end of tenancy and landlord turnarounds sit alongside the regular domestic work.
What we run into on Carlton mattress cleaning jobs
The find on a let is under the mattress rather than on it. Lift a divan mattress off a two drawer base and the platform beneath carries a printed grid of dust in the shape of what is under it, the board edges, the runner rails and the joint down the centre where two halves clip together, because nothing has moved it since the bed was built. The drawers hold the rest: coins, socks, a charger and bedding that went in damp. We vacuum the platform, the drawer interiors and the floor beneath the base, and photograph anything worth keeping so it is recorded rather than bagged as rubbish.
How a Carlton mattress cleaning job actually runs
Scheduling follows who owns the bed. A landlord booking sits between tenancies, competing for the same short window as everything else that has to happen in an empty house, and it should go in before the carpets rather than after, because a mattress is worked in the room and what comes off it lands on the floor. A household booking is the opposite problem: the bed has to be slept in that night, so it goes in first thing and never late afternoon. Bedrooms in the terraces are small and the furniture stands close, so we need the bed pulled clear of the walls and roughly a metre free along one side to work down, which usually means a wardrobe door will not open while we are in the room. Access is on foot from a side street with the machine and the vacuum carried in together, and the stairs in these houses are steep and turn at the bottom, so nothing large comes in or goes out on the day. Say at booking whether the base is a divan, a slatted frame or an ottoman, because the ottoman is the one that has to be emptied before we arrive.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly Victorian terraces along Carlton Hill and interwar semis spreading north toward Gedling, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run Carlton on the same round as Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold.
What we check on every Carlton job
Two marks turn up again and again in this stock and they are not the same thing at all. The first is a broad yellow bloom across the middle of the mattress, widest where the shoulders and hips sit, which is perspiration salt and body oil that has migrated down into the filling over years. That lightens and does not clear, and we say so before starting rather than after. The second is a sharp edged tidemark with a defined ring, a spill that dried from the outside in, and those respond much better than they look as though they will. On a bed standing on a solid platform base rather than slats, the underside is the face that never dries, and in a cold back bedroom it can carry a musty smell and a shadow of spotting along the edge where it meets the platform. We lift it, clean and dry both faces, and tell you plainly when the base has failed rather than the mattress.
What the mattress cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- The mattress itself: More dry passes than wet ones, so less water goes in than a carpet would take
- Stains and odour: Bicarbonate deodorising where the smell sits in the surface
- The rest of the bed: Ottoman and drawer interiors cleared of dust and debris
- The mattress itself: Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What mattress cleaning costs in Carlton
Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£40 to £70
Typical per mattress in Carlton. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per mattress |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Cot or child's mattress | £15 to £30 |
| Single | £25 to £45 |
| Double | £40 to £70 |
| King | £50 to £85 |
| Super king | £60 to £100 |
One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Divan base or headboard, each | £25 to £50 |
| Set stain treatment, per area | £10 to £30 |
| Deodorising treatment | £10 to £25 |
| Second and later mattresses, same visit | 20% to 30% less each |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
The label has been cut off. Does that stop you cleaning it?
It makes us more careful. The label carries the care code and usually the filling, and without it we work from a hidden test area and from how the mattress behaves under pressure. Foam takes far less water than a sprung one, so an unlabelled bed is treated as the more delicate of the two. In a let the missing label matters twice over: a mattress supplied in a furnished tenancy should carry a permanent fire safety label, and cleaning does not put one back.
The house is empty between tenancies. Is that a good time to do it?
It is the right time and the hardest conditions. An empty house has the heating off, the windows shut and nobody moving air through it, so a mattress that would be dry by evening in a lived in room can still be damp the next morning. Switch the heating on at its normal setting the day before and leave it on, and take a morning slot. We finish with air moving across the surface and give you an honest verdict before we go.
Can you clean the bed in a furnished let before a check in?
Yes, and it is worth photographing while we are there. A mattress on an inventory is described by its condition, so a cleaned bed with a dated photograph is a far better position at the next check out than an argument about who caused a mark. We vacuum, treat and dry it, list what lightened and what did not, and send the pictures the same day. We will not wet clean anything the label restricts to spot cleaning, and we say which items those were.
Should a landlord clean this one or replace it?
Look at the structure before the surface. Cleaning deals with soil, smell and what sits in the top layer. It does nothing for a collapsed side, a spring you can feel through the fill, a torn cover or a mattress that has been soaked right through at some point, and none of those get better for money spent on them. We give you a straight view in the room, and where the answer is replace we will say it rather than take the booking anyway.
Do you cover the whole of Carlton?
Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does mattress cleaning cost in Carlton?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Carlton?
Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. On-street, usually available, and we group Carlton with Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold on the rota.
