Mattress Cleaning for Porchester homes

A blocked chimney breast in both main bedrooms and a bay taking the whole window wall means a double bed only fits in the alcove beside it, one side hard against a wall. The head end is where the marking always is.

The first floor of these semis has a blocked chimney breast in both main bedrooms, and it decides where the bed goes. In the front room the bay takes the whole window wall, so a double ends up in the alcove beside the breast with its head against an outside wall and one long side hard against another. That is comfortable to sleep in and awkward to work on, because a mattress cleaned where it stands has a side nobody can get to. We ask for the bed pulled clear of both walls before we arrive, which takes two minutes once the bedding is off and decides whether both faces get done properly. The third bedroom is the opposite problem: the bed cannot be walked round at all, so the mattress comes out onto the landing.

Porchester sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. Bay-fronted semis in pairs, each with a garden at the front and a longer one behind. Two gardens mean soil entering the house at both ends, and because the plots sit slightly above or below the road, the ground between the back door and the lawn is usually the wettest part of it.

What we run into on Porchester mattress cleaning jobs

The head end tells you where the bed has been standing. Against a wall that runs cold, the ticking picks up a fine grey shadow along its top edge and a scatter of black speckling in the piping, which is airborne mould settling rather than dirt worked in, and it sits on the surface rather than down in the fill. A hand's width of gap behind the headboard would prevent most of it. The base is the other constant. A divan on castors over a boarded floor sits in moving air, and the underside of the platform collects fine grit working up between the boards, so it is grey where the mattress above is not.

How a Porchester mattress cleaning job actually runs

Everything for this job goes up the stairs and comes back down again, so the practical questions are all about the first floor. The flight rises off the hall and turns near the top, and the machine, the hoses and the kit are carried up it, which is worth knowing if you have a cat that bolts. Morning slots beat afternoon ones for the same reason they do on carpets, which is drying time. In winter we ask that the heating has been on beforehand and that the bedroom windows will open, because a shut bedroom holds on to the moisture we have just put into the surface. Beds want stripping before we arrive rather than while we stand there, and in a child's room the floor around the bed matters as much as the bed does, since we have to walk both long sides of it. In a let the questions change. Tell us what the inventory calls the mattress, whether a protector was listed with it, and who is signing the result off, because a landlord and an outgoing tenant do not always want the same report.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly interwar and postwar bay-fronted semis running the length of the ridge road, most with a garden front and back, and plots that step up or down from the pavement, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Porchester on the same round as Mapperley, Carlton and Thorneywood.

What we check on every Porchester job

A mattress in one of these bedrooms is turned far less often than its label asks, and the reason is floor space rather than laziness. With the bed in the alcove beside the chimney breast there is nowhere to stand a double on its side and swing it, so it gets flipped face to face if it gets anything, and almost never rotated end to end. You can read that straight off the surface. There is a hollow on each sleeping side with a ridge left between them, the top third carries the head end marking and the bottom two thirds are nearly clean. The wall side is the other tell. Where a bed has been pushed hard against plaster, the ticking along that edge is compressed flat and grey down its whole length, and the piping there holds a line of lint that a vacuum run from the top of the bed has never once reached.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The rest of the bed: Ottoman and drawer interiors cleared of dust and debris
  • Stains and odour: Mineral tidemarks from perspiration treated separately from the body oils beside them
  • The mattress itself: Pre-treatment matched to the soiling, with proper dwell time
  • The rest of the bed: The gap behind and under the bed, which nothing reaches once the frame is in place

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Porchester

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Porchester. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Does the bed have to come apart, or can you work with it made up?

The bedding comes off and the bed moves, but the mattress stays where it is. What we need is to walk both long sides, so the frame or divan wants pulling away from the walls before we start rather than while we wait. If it is a divan with drawers, empty them the night before, because the drawer interiors and the platform under the mattress are part of the job and neither can be done full.

How long before we can make the bed up again?

Several hours, and the front bedroom is the slowest room in the house for it, with cold outside wall on two sides and glass across most of a third. Far less water goes into a mattress than into a carpet and we finish with air moving across the surface, but it only gives that up from one face at a time. Leave the window on the catch, keep the door open to the landing, and make it up in the evening.

Will the stains come out?

Some will, and you get told which before we start rather than afterwards. Fresh protein marks, blood, sweat and milk, lift with a cold treatment. Urine needs an enzyme and dwell time, because the crystals a plain detergent leaves behind are what brings the smell back in the first humid week of the year. Old yellowed tidemarks that have gone through the ticking usually lighten rather than clear, and anything soaked down into foam is out of reach.

The room smells damp and we assume it is the mattress. Is it?

It may well be the room. The front bedroom has cold outside wall on two sides and a bay beneath it, and a bed jammed into the alcove with no air behind it holds moisture at its head end whatever condition the mattress is in. We will vacuum, treat and dry it and tell you honestly what the ticking shows. If the marking is all on the wall side, pulling the bed a few inches off the plaster does more good than any clean will.

Do you cover the whole of Porchester?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Porchester?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Porchester?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Most pairs of semis have a side gate and a passage to the back garden, so equipment goes round rather than through the house, and we group Porchester with Mapperley, Carlton and Thorneywood on the rota.
