Mattress Cleaning for Woodthorpe homes

Wide bedrooms mean we can work all the way round a bed without moving it out. The staircase is the constraint instead: a right angle on winders near the top, which is why a big mattress here has usually never come down it.

Bedrooms here are wide enough that a bed does not have to be shifted to be cleaned, which is never true in a terrace box room. We can get all the way round the frame, work both long sides without shuffling it, and stand a mattress on its side against the wall if it needs turning. The staircase is the constraint instead. Stairs in this stock turn through a right angle on winders near the top with a low ceiling over the turn, so a large mattress that went up while the house was empty will not come down again without a struggle. Nothing has to leave the room, which is the whole point of cleaning a bed where it stands.

Woodthorpe sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. Houses that are wide rather than tall, so floor area sets the hours instead of ceiling height. Almost every plot has mature planting on it, which means leaf litter, sticky sap and pollen arriving through the back door and settling on the glass for most of the year.

What we run into on Woodthorpe mattress cleaning jobs

The bed in the main bedroom is nearly always a divan on castors standing on fitted carpet, and it has not moved in years. The castors sink into the pile and leave four sockets, the carpet under the base is a shade darker than the rest, and a drift of dust and lost oddments sits in the gap between the base and the skirting. Drawer bases are the other reservoir. A two drawer divan collects fibre from whatever is stored in it, and the underside of the drawer runs along the carpet as it opens, so the dust ends up on top of the linen rather than beneath it. We lift the drawers right out before anything else starts.

How a Woodthorpe mattress cleaning job actually runs

Everything comes upstairs, so the practical planning is about the route rather than the room. The hose and the machine head go up a staircase that turns near the top, which means the cable and the hose have to be flaked out on the landing rather than pulled round the winder under tension, and it is why we ask for the landing to be clear of laundry baskets and anything on the floor of the turn. In the bedroom itself we want the bed stripped before we arrive, the linen out of the room entirely rather than piled in the corner, and the bedside tables and lamps moved clear of both long sides. If the divan has drawers, empty them. Timing follows the drying. A bed slept in that night gets the first slot of the day so it has the longest possible window, and a guest room bed can go later. We ask for windows open through the afternoon and the heating on low in that room, and we would rather you left the bed unmade until bedtime instead of putting a duvet straight back over it.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly wide interwar detached houses and large semis on generous plots, with 1950s and 1960s detached infill on the roads falling away from the park, and mature gardens behind almost all of it, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Woodthorpe on the same round as Sherwood, Daybrook and Mapperley.

What we check on every Woodthorpe job

The side of the mattress against the outside wall is the side that tells you something. In the bedroom over the bay, the headboard usually stands against the external wall with the divan pushed hard back to it, so there is no air gap at all behind the bed. Through the winter that wall runs colder than the room, moisture condenses on it and the mattress side facing it stays damp for months, which is where the grey speckling and the musty smell come from rather than from anything anyone spilled. We find it by pulling the bed forward and looking at the wall as well as the mattress, and we say plainly that cleaning the mattress treats the symptom. Pulling the bed a hand's width off the wall and leaving the gap there does more for it than we can, and it costs nothing.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The mattress itself: Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
  • The mattress itself: Label and construction checked before anything is applied
  • The rest of the bed: Protector or topper handled, washed or refitted as the label allows
  • The rest of the bed: Skirting and the wall line behind the headboard

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Woodthorpe

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Woodthorpe. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Could you do it outside on the drive where there is more space?

No, and we would talk you out of it even in good weather. A mattress carried down a turning staircase gets scuffed on the newel post and the ceiling, and one laid on a drive picks up grit that works into the ticking and never fully comes out again. Damp is the worse risk: outdoor air puts moisture into a mattress faster than we can take it out. The room is wide enough to work in, so we work in the room.

The spare room is only heated when somebody stays. Will a mattress dry properly in there?

Yes, provided we plan for it rather than discover it. A cold room slows evaporation, so that bed goes first in the day, gets the driest method the soiling allows and has air moved across it while we work elsewhere in the house. Open the window for the afternoon and put the heating on low rather than high in that room only. Leave the bed unmade overnight, because a duvet thrown back over a damp surface traps everything we have just lifted.

We have found grey spotting on the underside of the mattress. Can you get rid of it?

We can clean it and reduce it, and we will not promise it goes completely. Spotting on the underside is surface growth fed by moisture, so the first job is finding where the moisture came from: a cold wall behind the bed, a slatted base over a solid floor, or a protector that was put on damp. If it has gone into the foam or the fill rather than sitting on the ticking, that is beyond cleaning and we will say so on the day.

Is it worth doing the divan base as well as the mattress?

Yes, and it is the half people leave out. The base is fabric covered, it sits on the carpet collecting everything the room drops, and the top platform under the mattress holds a surprising amount of fibre and dust that goes straight back into a freshly cleaned mattress the moment it is laid down again. Doing one without the other is like cleaning a carpet and leaving the underlay. Drawer interiors and the fabric headboard are part of the same pass.

Do you cover the whole of Woodthorpe?

Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Woodthorpe?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Woodthorpe?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Almost every house has a drive, so the van comes off the road and the equipment travels a short distance, and we group Woodthorpe with Sherwood, Daybrook and Mapperley on the rota.
