Mattress Cleaning for Mapperley Park homes

Bedsteads rather than divans, standing on soft pine boards that a brass castor scores if a bed gets dragged instead of lifted. Rooms are tall and cold, so the drying governs the booking and a top floor guest room is the slowest of them.

Three kinds of bed turn up in these houses and they are not the same job. The principal bedroom over the bay usually has a bedstead, iron or timber, with slats and a sprung mattress rather than a divan, so there is no base to clean and clear floor underneath. The old staff floor above holds the guest beds, in dormer rooms with the coldest glass in the house and no heating on for most of the year. The flats have a landlord's mattress that appears on an inventory and gets looked at by somebody who never slept on it. The first of those is straightforward, the second is a drying problem before it is a cleaning one, and the third has to be photographed before and after.

Mapperley Park sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. Scale is the first problem and fragility is the second. These are houses with a full top floor built for live-in staff, so a visit that would cover a semi covers one floor here. Original joinery, tiled paths and cast iron grates then decide which products can go anywhere near them.

What we run into on Mapperley Park mattress cleaning jobs

Moving the bed is where the risk of damage sits, and it is not the mattress that is at risk. Bedroom floors here are original pine, soft, frequently waxed rather than varnished, and a bedstead on brass castors dragged a metre across them leaves four grooves that stay for good. Iron bedsteads are heavier than they look and their joints are pinned rather than bolted, so a frame taken hold of by the wrong rail racks itself and drops a pin on the floor. We lift instead of sliding, put felt or board under every foot before anything moves, and where a bed cannot be shifted safely we work around it and say so rather than forcing it.

How a Mapperley Park mattress cleaning job actually runs

Book it for a morning, and book it in the half of the year when a window can stay open. That is the single most useful thing to know about having a bed cleaned in one of these houses, because the cleaning is quick and the drying is not, and a tall room that has been shut up is slow whatever the method. Which floor the bed is on then sets the rest. A first floor bedroom over the bay is warm enough and has a large window, so it behaves like any other room. A guest bed on the old staff floor needs the heating asked for in advance and the door left open afterwards, and in deep winter it is honestly better held over. Practical things worth settling when you book: strip the bed beforehand and have the linen out of the room, tell us if a protector is going back on so it goes on dry, and plan where anybody sleeping in that bed goes tonight. Two or three beds in one visit is normally sensible, but they get worked from the top of the house downwards so nothing has to be carried back up.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly large late-Victorian and Edwardian villas on wide plots, red brick with stone dressings and deep bays, a good number now divided into flats, and almost nothing built small, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Mapperley Park on the same round as Mapperley, Sherwood and St Ann's.

What we check on every Mapperley Park job

Bedrooms in these houses were built with no fitted storage at all, so what accumulates under a bed does more harm than what is on top of it. A room of this size ends up with cases, boxes and spare bedding pushed under the frame and left for years, and that layer stops air moving beneath the mattress in a room that is already cold. Cardboard sitting there goes soft at the corners and the boards underneath stay darker than the rest of the floor. It is also where most of the dust in the room actually is, held in the gaps and against the skirting rather than in the mattress. We clear the space, vacuum the floor and the frame while it is open, and ask for the boxes to go back somewhere with air around them, because sliding them straight back in undoes a fair part of what the visit achieved.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The rest of the bed: The gap behind and under the bed, which nothing reaches once the frame is in place
  • The mattress itself: Pre-treatment matched to the soiling, with proper dwell time
  • Stains and odour: Mineral tidemarks from perspiration treated separately from the body oils beside them
  • The rest of the bed: Ottoman and drawer interiors cleared of dust and debris

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Mapperley Park

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Mapperley Park. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The guest room is on the top floor and it is freezing up there. Can it still be done?

In spring and summer, comfortably. In January it needs planning, because that floor has dormer glass, no heating on and little air movement, and a mattress that does not dry is worse off than one nobody touched. We book those rooms for a morning, run an air mover across the surface, and ask for the heating on low and the door left open for the rest of the day. If the room genuinely cannot be warmed we will say so instead of taking the booking.

The flat is let furnished and the mattress is on the inventory. What should we ask for?

Photographs, before and after, and a written note of the marks that were already there. A clerk compares the check out against the check in report with an allowance for fair wear, so an old sweat tidemark is not something you are expected to have removed, but a mattress that has clearly never been vacuumed is. Get the verdict on what will lighten rather than clear before the work starts, and keep it with the rest of your check out paperwork.

When can the bed be made up again?

Four to eight hours in a ventilated room is the normal answer, and in a cold top floor room here it is the longer end of that or more. If we finish in the afternoon, treat it as tomorrow night rather than tonight, and sort out a spare room or a sofa before we arrive rather than after. Sheets and a duvet on a mattress that is still damp seal the moisture in and undo the job, and a body on top adds heat and more moisture to it.

Can you do several beds in the same visit?

Yes, and it is the sensible way to buy it, because the call out is covered once rather than three times. The order matters in a house on three floors. We start at the top, where the room is coldest and needs the longest to dry, and work down, so the slowest bed gets the most hours of daylight and nothing is carried back upstairs at the end. Tell us which beds when you book so the morning is planned rather than improvised.

Do you cover the whole of Mapperley Park?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Mapperley Park?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Mapperley Park?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Most houses have a drive, often gravel and often shared between flats, so we ask which space is yours rather than guessing, and we group Mapperley Park with Mapperley, Sherwood and St Ann's on the rota.
