Mattress Cleaning for Netherfield homes
Which bedroom the bed is in changes the job. The back room has solid wall on two sides and nothing warming it, so a mattress pushed into that corner is doing the drying for the wall as well as for itself.
Which bedroom the bed is in decides how this visit is planned, and on a terrace that is not a small difference. The back bedroom sits over the outrigger or hard against a solid gable with nothing in the wall to interrupt the cold, and it runs a few degrees under the rest of the house from October onward, so a mattress cleaned in there after lunch is still damp when somebody wants to sleep on it. The front bedroom has the bigger radiator and whatever sun the street gets. Beds here are therefore booked in the morning, worked at the dry end of the method rather than the wet end, and an air mover runs across the surface for the whole time we are on the base and the headboard.
Netherfield sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. Everything here sits low against the Trent flood plain, and the housing was put up quickly and cheaply for men working the railway yards. Solid brick walls with no cavity and a lot of it now rented, so damp, condensation and mould come up more often than ordinary dirt does.
What we run into on Netherfield mattress cleaning jobs
The face of the mattress against an outside wall is the one to look at first. The bed goes into the corner because no other wall is long enough to take it, and the ticking on that side picks up a fine grey speckle that gets read as dirt. It is surface growth on the sizing in the fabric, fed by air that cannot move through the gap between cold brick and a mattress edge, and it responds better than the sweat marks in the middle do. The divan sides carry it low down near the castors as well. We treat both, then ask you to leave a hand's width behind the bed when it goes back.
How a Netherfield mattress cleaning job actually runs
Everything for this job comes in through the front door and goes up a staircase that rises out of the living room, so the machine stays in the van and the hose runs the length of the ground floor and up the stairs with the doors held open behind it. That puts the van within reach of the house rather than anywhere on the street, which is the main reason mattress work on these rows is booked in the morning. The landing is the other constraint. There is not enough of it to swing a wand, so a bed gets pulled off the wall and worked from the doorway and the free side rather than walked around, and anything on the floor needs to be gone before we arrive. Strip the bed beforehand and get the bedding out of the room, because there is nowhere on a landing this size to stack a duvet and two pillows while somebody works past them. If the house is on shifts and that bed is needed the same night, tell us when you book rather than on the day, because it changes which room we start in and how much moisture goes in.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly railway terraces in long straight rows off Victoria Road, built for the Colwick yards, with postwar infill toward the flood plain and a high share of the stock privately let, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run Netherfield on the same round as Carlton, Colwick and Gedling.
What we check on every Netherfield job
Turn a mattress over on a divan and the underside often carries a map of the base it has been sitting on. Dark bars where the mattress met the timber of the platform, paler between them, sometimes with a musty smell that is stronger down there than anywhere on the sleeping face. It is condensation rather than dirt. Warm damp air from a body moves down through the mattress overnight, meets a base that is cold because the room is cold, and gives up its moisture where the two touch. In an unheated back bedroom it happens all winter. Cleaning the top face and ignoring that is half a job, so the base platform gets vacuumed and treated as well, and the practical fix is airflow: a slatted frame instead of a solid top, or the mattress stood off the base for an hour on a dry day now and then.
What the mattress cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- The mattress itself: Air movement across the surface before we leave
- Stains and odour: Enzymatic pre-treatment for urine, which breaks down the uric acid crystals a detergent leaves behind
- Stains and odour: Bicarbonate deodorising where the smell sits in the surface
- Stains and odour: An honest verdict on what will lighten rather than clear, given before we start rather than after
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What mattress cleaning costs in Netherfield
Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£40 to £70
Typical per mattress in Netherfield. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per mattress |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Cot or child's mattress | £15 to £30 |
| Single | £25 to £45 |
| Double | £40 to £70 |
| King | £50 to £85 |
| Super king | £60 to £100 |
One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Divan base or headboard, each | £25 to £50 |
| Set stain treatment, per area | £10 to £30 |
| Deodorising treatment | £10 to £25 |
| Second and later mattresses, same visit | 20% to 30% less each |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can a double divan be taken apart to get at it?
Most of the ones in these bedrooms are two halves clipped together, and that is worth establishing before the visit rather than during it. Split, a base is easier to vacuum, spot clean and pull off the wall, and easier again to move on a landing this size. A one piece base stays where it is and gets worked in position. Either way the mattress itself is cleaned on the bed rather than stood up on its edge.
When can we make the bed up again?
Later than you would expect in the back room, which is the reason we start early. Four to eight hours in a ventilated room is normal on a sprung mattress and longer on foam, and a cold room with the window shut adds to that figure rather than to nothing. We check the surface by hand before leaving and say plainly whether it is a tonight job or a tomorrow job, so nobody puts a fitted sheet over damp filling.
Can you do both bedrooms in one visit?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to buy it on a house this size, since the hose is already run and the call-out is already covered. What it does mean is the whole upstairs being out of use for the afternoon while both dry. We take the back bedroom first because it is the slower of the two, then the front, so the room that needs the longest gets the most daylight hours before anybody wants to use it.
The bed is a metal frame with slats rather than a divan. Is that easier?
It dries quicker, which is the part that matters in these rooms, because air reaches the underside instead of being trapped against a platform. It is also lighter to move off the wall. The trade is that slats catch dust and the floor under the bed is exposed rather than closed off, so the vacuum work takes slightly longer. On balance a slatted frame in a cold back bedroom is the better bed to own here.
Do you cover the whole of Netherfield?
Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does mattress cleaning cost in Netherfield?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Netherfield?
Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. On-street only across the terraced streets, with cars both sides and not much room to pass, and we group Netherfield with Carlton, Colwick and Gedling on the rota.
