Mattress Cleaning for Attenborough homes

Bedrooms here are small and the beds are large for them, so a mattress is cleaned flat where it lies with no room to stand it on edge. Put a divan against a solid outside wall and the marks are on the underside.

Almost every mattress we clean in the village is cleaned in the room it lives in, and in the older houses that room is barely bigger than the bed. A small double on a drawer divan fills a cottage back bedroom, no landing is wide enough to stand it on edge, and the window is a small casement opening onto still damp air rather than a draught. So the method assumes the mattress stays flat and horizontal from start to finish, and that the only air moving over it is air we brought with us. That pushes the whole job toward less water, more dry passes and a longer time on site with a fan running than the same bed would need in a modern house half a mile inland.

Attenborough sits in NG9, under Broxtowe Borough Council. Open water comes right up to the southern edge of the village, and the air here stays damp longer than it does a mile inland. That shows as green film on frames, render and paving, as slower drying indoors, and as condensation in the older solid walled cottages well into spring.

What we run into on Attenborough mattress cleaning jobs

The face that tells you most here is the one nobody turns over. A divan pushed hard against a solid outside wall in an unheated back bedroom puts the mattress a few centimetres from the coldest surface in the house, and the underside and the wall side are where the grey speckling and the musty smell are while the top face looks perfectly clean. The same shows on the top platform of the base below it. That is surface growth fed by condensation rather than anything anybody spilled, and it returns if the bed goes straight back against the wall afterwards. We clean it, dry it, and say where it came from rather than leaving you to find it again.

How an Attenborough mattress cleaning job actually runs

Bookings divide by who owns the bed. Owner occupiers ask once, usually after a spill, an illness or a child moving out of a cot, and it is one or two beds in a house we may never see again. The short lets near the reserve ask on a cycle between guests, where the constraint is the changeover window rather than the drying. The rest is landlords with a let coming back to them. All three need the same short list settled before the day. The room has to be clear enough to walk round three sides of the bed, which in these bedrooms usually means a chair and a chest of drawers going out onto the landing. Bedding comes off and goes in the wash before we arrive rather than being stripped while we stand there. We need a socket in the room for the machine and a second for the air mover, and in a house that has not been rewired those are frequently on the same circuit as the light. And the heating wants to be on from the morning, because how quickly this dries depends more on the room than on anything we bring into it.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly older cottages and larger period houses in the conservation area around the church, interwar and postwar semis along Attenborough Lane and Barratt Lane, and a little later infill toward the water, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Attenborough on the same round as Chilwell, Beeston and Toton.

What we check on every Attenborough job

Divan bases are the other half of the job and they are almost always skipped. The top platform under the mattress collects a felt of dust and skin fallen through the gap at the headboard end, and in a drawer base the runners hold that plus whatever has been stored in there for years. Under the bed, in a room with a solid floor and nothing between it and the ground, the dust sits damp rather than loose, so it does not fly up and it does not come away on a quick pass; it wants a proper head worked slowly across it. The headboard is the third find. A padded headboard flat against a chimney breast or an outside wall goes cold on its back face and marks along the top edge, and that mark is on the wall behind it as often as it is on the fabric itself.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Stains and odour: Odour traced to its source, because a fragrance laid over a urine mark comes back in the first humid week
  • Stains and odour: An honest verdict on what will lighten rather than clear, given before we start rather than after
  • The rest of the bed: Divan base sides and top platform vacuumed and spot cleaned
  • The rest of the bed: Fabric headboard cleaned to the same standard as the mattress

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What mattress cleaning costs in Attenborough

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Attenborough. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Can the mattress be taken downstairs or outside to be cleaned?

Not usually, and it is not needed. The cottage staircases here turn tight at the top and several have a door at the bottom, so anything larger than a single is not coming down without a struggle, and putting it outside into damp air achieves nothing anyway. Everything happens in the room, on the frame or the base, with protection underneath and air moving across the surface before we leave.

How long before the bed can be slept in?

Plan on the evening rather than the afternoon, and longer in a cold room. We use as little water as the soiling allows and finish with mechanical air movement, but a mattress cannot be turned on its edge and aired the way a cushion can, so what goes in comes back out through the same face. Book a morning slot, leave the door open and the heating on through the day, and leave the bed stripped rather than making it up early.

Is it worth cleaning an old mattress at all?

Sometimes not, and we would rather say so before you pay for it. If the cover is torn, the foam has collapsed into a trough, or there is deep yellowing that has been setting for years, cleaning lightens the surface and changes nothing underneath it. What is worth doing is a bed in reasonable condition that has had one incident, or a let mattress getting a light reset between tenants. Ask us to look at it before booking rather than after, and we will give you the verdict either way.

The bed stands against a cold wall. What should we change?

Pull it off the wall by a hand's width so air can pass behind it, and leave the bed unmade for an hour in the morning instead of making it straight away, which lets the night's moisture out of the bedding rather than shutting it in. A slatted frame breathes considerably better than a solid platform base near a cold wall. If the room is unheated, a low background heat through the winter does more for the mattress than anything we can apply to it afterwards.

Do you cover the whole of Attenborough?

Yes, all of NG9 and the surrounding streets, under Broxtowe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Attenborough?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Attenborough?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Lanes here are narrow and the reserve car park fills at weekends, so visits are booked for the morning, and we group Attenborough with Chilwell, Beeston and Toton on the rota.
