Mattress Cleaning for Toton homes

Long tenure owner occupiers on the estates, sleeping on divans bought when the bedroom was last decorated. Upstairs replacement windows here are top openers on restrictors, so drying runs on air movement and a morning slot rather than an open window.

Almost all of this work is for households who have been in the same house a long time, and that changes what is on the bed rather than how it gets cleaned. A mattress slept on by the same two people for fifteen years carries a slow, even build of perspiration salts and body oils rather than the single incident that brings us out to a let. It has usually never been turned either, because divans got heavier as the people lifting them got older, so all the wear sits on one face. The other consequence of long tenure is that the bed is boxed in. Wardrobes went in around it, a chest of drawers filled the space at the foot, and the mattress has to be worked where it lies.

Toton sits in NG9, under Broxtowe Borough Council. Estate houses of a certain age reach the point where the kitchen, the bathroom and often the back of the house get replaced within a few years of each other. That is why builders work sits alongside the regular rounds here rather than turning up as an occasional job.

What we run into on Toton mattress cleaning jobs

The drawers in the base are the find. Divans of this vintage carry two or four drawers in the sides, and on a carpeted floor they run directly on the pile, so every open and close grinds against the carpet and pushes fibre and grit back into the base. Inside, they hold spare bedding that has not moved in years. Underneath them the platform collects a grey mat of fibre, dust and whatever the runners have shed onto it. We take the drawers right out, vacuum the platform and the drawer boxes with a crevice tool, and put the bedding back into a base that has stopped feeding dust up into the mattress above it.

How a Toton mattress cleaning job actually runs

A mattress clean here is booked for a morning, and the reason is drying rather than convenience. The bedrooms are upstairs, and the replacement windows fitted through the eighties and nineties are mostly top hung openers with a restrictor on them, so the maximum opening is a few inches and the air exchange is nothing like an open window on the ground floor. An air mover run across the surface with the bedroom door held open to the landing therefore does far more than the window ever will, and a bed cleaned at four in the afternoon is not one to sleep on that night. Most households here have a spare room or a sofa to fall back on, and the ones that do not need the first appointment of the day. The landing is the other practical item. These are narrow, with the stairs rising straight into them and no space to leave a hose lying across the top step, so equipment comes up in stages. Clear the landing and the floor around the bed before we arrive and the visit runs noticeably shorter.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly 1950s and 1960s semis and short terraces on the estates off Stapleford Lane and Swiney Way, with later cul de sac development and newer closes filling in between them, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Toton on the same round as Chilwell, Attenborough and Stapleford.

What we check on every Toton job

The bed that gives most trouble in these houses is the one nobody sleeps in. The third bedroom is small, it holds a single that gets made up two or three times a year, and the rest of the time the radiator is off and the door is shut. A mattress in that room never gets the daily airing a used bed gets when the covers come back, so the moisture that goes into it over a weekend of guests stays in it, and after a few years you find faint grey speckling along the seams and on the underside where it meets the base. That is surface growth on the ticking rather than anything rooted in the filling, which is why it usually responds. What stops it returning is not the cleaning. It is leaving that door open, the radiator on low, and the mattress stood off its platform between visitors.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The mattress itself: Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
  • The rest of the bed: Divan base sides and top platform vacuumed and spot cleaned
  • The mattress itself: Air movement across the surface before we leave
  • The rest of the bed: Protector or topper handled, washed or refitted as the label allows

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Toton property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What mattress cleaning costs in Toton

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Toton. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The mattress has never been turned. Does that matter for cleaning?

It matters for the mattress rather than for us. Many modern mattresses are single sided by design and are meant to be rotated end to end rather than flipped, and the label tells you which yours is. Where a two sided mattress has spent years on one face, both the soiling and the compression are on that side. Cleaning lifts the first and does nothing at all for the second, so we say which of the two is making it look tired.

The bed is boxed in by wardrobes. Does it need moving out of the room?

Not out of the room, but we do need to get round three sides of it and open the base drawers. Clearing the floor at the foot of the bed and taking out anything stored underneath is the useful preparation. Where a mattress cannot be stood on its edge at all, it is cleaned flat where it lies, which is perfectly normal and takes a little longer, because the sides and the base seam then have to be reached by working round the frame.

There is grey speckling on the mattress in the spare room. Will that clean off?

Usually, if it is sitting on the surface. Speckling along the seams of a rarely used mattress in a cold, closed room is growth on the ticking, and it treats and vacuums away. What does not treat is growth that has taken hold inside the filling after the mattress was soaked at some point in its life, because nothing reaches it and nothing dries it out. We look at the underside first and tell you which of the two you have before quoting anything for the work.

How long before the bed can be made up again?

Four to eight hours in a ventilated room, and upstairs in these houses it tends to be the longer end of that, because a restricted top opener moves much less air than people assume it does. An air mover runs across the surface while the base and the headboard are done, and we tell you when it is ready rather than leaving you to press a hand on it and guess. If we finish in the afternoon, plan on the following night and leave the bedding off until then.

Do you cover the whole of Toton?

Yes, all of NG9 and the surrounding streets, under Broxtowe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Toton?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Toton?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. Most houses have a drive or hardstanding at the front, so parking is rarely a problem, and we group Toton with Chilwell, Attenborough and Stapleford on the rota.
