Deep Cleaning for Attenborough homes

Solid walled cottages and interwar houses on a floodplain, where the annual reset starts at floor level rather than at the ceiling. Skirting, understairs cupboards and the backs of ground floor rooms carry more than the same rooms would half a mile inland.

A deep clean here begins low rather than high. Ground floors in the village sit close to the water table, and the bottom half metre of every room shows it: skirting that has swelled and lifted slightly from the plaster, a chalky line on painted brick in the understairs cupboard, and a faint tide of dust bonded into a surface that is never quite dry. That gets lifted dry, with a soft brush working ahead of the vacuum, and only then is it treated, because going in with a cloth first turns it to a smear. Above that it is the ordinary annual list, though the cottages add their own items: beams that shed grit when disturbed, small casement windows with deep reveals, and cupboards built into the thickness of the wall.

Attenborough sits in NG9, under Broxtowe Borough Council. The housing here is mostly older cottages and larger period houses in the conservation area around the church, interwar and postwar semis along Attenborough Lane and Barratt Lane, and a little later infill toward the water, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

What we run into on Attenborough deep cleaning jobs

The houses that have taken floodwater at some point are the ones with the most to find, and they are not always obvious from the front. Look for sockets set high on the wall, a hard floor downstairs in a house that has carpet everywhere else, and a horizontal joint in the plaster where the wall was cut back and made good. Behind kitchen kickboards in those houses there is usually fine silt still sitting in the corners, because the boards were clipped back on and nobody has had them off since. We take them off, vacuum, and say what we found rather than putting them back quietly.

How an Attenborough deep cleaning job actually runs

A deep clean here is quoted from what is in the house rather than from its floor area, because the village stock runs to tall rooms, deep skirting, picture rails and staircases with turned spindles, and every one of those items is measured in time. Booking one means giving up a full day of the house rather than a morning. We want the heating on, because a cold room slows every drying stage and puts the finish back; we want somewhere to stack what comes out of cupboards, since these houses rarely have a spare room to use as a staging area; and we want to know in advance about a loft hatch, a high shelf or a light fitting you would like reached, so the right steps come on the van rather than being improvised from a kitchen chair. Appliances are the other half of the day. An oven, a hob extractor and a fridge seal each take proper time, and they are best confirmed at booking rather than added on the morning, because they change the finish time and every other room is planned around it.

Who books it here

Open water comes right up to the southern edge of the village, and the air here stays damp longer than it does a mile inland. That shows as green film on frames, render and paving, as slower drying indoors, and as condensation in the older solid walled cottages well into spring.

We run Attenborough on the same round as Chilwell, Beeston and Toton.

What we check on every Attenborough job

Radiators are where a deep clean earns its name in these houses. Above almost every one there is a soft grey plume on the wall, sometimes stopping neatly at a picture rail, which is household dust carried up on the convection current and deposited on cool plaster. It is not a mark you scrub, because on emulsion scrubbing burnishes the paint and leaves a shinier patch than the stain. It gets lifted dry first, then treated gently and evenly across the whole panel of wall so nothing shows as a patch. Behind the radiator itself, and particularly behind the old cast iron column type, dust felts into a mat that a vacuum head cannot reach and a duster only pushes further in. That needs a long flat brush worked downwards with the vacuum held below, and it is a job for before the floor is done rather than after.

What the deep cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • Bathrooms: Toilet including hinges, base and behind the pan
  • Kitchen, which is about 40% of the time: Fridge and freezer emptied, defrosted and washed including the seals
  • Everywhere else: Window interiors, sills, frames and the tracks they run in
  • Bathrooms: Shower head soaked or bagged with descaler

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full deep cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What deep cleaning costs in Attenborough

A one-off deep clean, priced as a job rather than by the hour. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£165 to £280

Typical one-off in Attenborough. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical one-off
Studio£110 to £180
1 bedroom£135 to £220
2 bedrooms£165 to £280
3 bedrooms£220 to £350
4 bedrooms£300 to £460

Our cost research puts a one-off deep clean of a two to three bedroom home at £165 to £350, which is the anchor the rest of this table is built around.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Single oven deep clean£45 to £80
Double oven£70 to £110
Range cooker£80 to £130

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Will a deep clean stop the ground floor smelling musty?

It will help and it will not be the whole answer. The smell is usually damp air held in soft materials near floor level: underlay, the bottom of curtains, the inside of a base unit, the coats in the porch. We clean and dry those, clear the understairs cupboard and get air moving through it. What keeps it away afterwards is airflow at low level, so blocked airbricks are worth checking before you book us a second time.

The house has beams and lime plaster. Is that a problem?

It changes the products rather than the scope. Lime plaster and limewash are soft and porous, so they are brushed and vacuumed rather than washed, and a general purpose spray will leave a mark you cannot get back out. Old timber gets a dry dust and, where it has been waxed, nothing stronger than a barely damp cloth. Tell us which surfaces are original when you book, because under a century of paint it is not always obvious what is underneath.

How long does a deep clean take and what order do you work in?

Plan on a full working day for a typical village house, and longer where the oven and the windows are included. We work top down and back to front: dry work before wet work, high before low, and the room you use most left until last so it is disturbed for the shortest time. Kitchen appliances run in the background because they need soaking time. The floors are the closing job in every room so nobody has to walk across them wet.

Will you move furniture, and what about things we would rather you left?

We move what two people can move safely: dining chairs, a sofa slid forward, a bedside table. Wardrobes, pianos, dressers full of china and anything on an uneven old floor stay where they are, and we clean up to and under them as far as we can reach. Tell us before the day about anything fragile, anything that is not to be touched and any cupboard you would rather we did not open, and we will note it and work around it.

Do you cover the whole of Attenborough?

Yes, all of NG9 and the surrounding streets, under Broxtowe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does deep cleaning cost in Attenborough?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how long it has been since the last one, the state of the oven, and how many bathrooms need descaling. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start deep cleaning in Attenborough?

Within a week or two normally, longer in March and April and through November when everyone books at once. Lanes here are narrow and the reserve car park fills at weekends, so visits are booked for the morning, and we group Attenborough with Chilwell, Beeston and Toton on the rota.
