Mattress Cleaning for Lady Bay homes
Beds are bigger than the rooms were built for and pushed hard against an outside wall. Lift one off a solid topped divan here and the underside tells you more about the room than about anybody who has slept on it.
Bedrooms in these terraces were laid out for a bed a good deal smaller than the one in them now. Put a king in the front room over the bay and what is left round it is a walkway, and the chimney breast takes a bite out of one wall, so there is nowhere to stand the mattress on edge while the second face is worked. That is the real constraint here, and it is geometry rather than cleaning. We work it flat, one face at a time, with the base done in between, and the mattress comes off the base rather than out of the room. At the embankment end the interwar semis have squarer bedrooms and the problem disappears, which is why the same bed can be a different length of visit two streets apart.
Lady Bay sits in NG2, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. Everything here sits inside a loop of the Trent, low and enclosed, with the water on one side and the embankment on the other. The air holds moisture year round, so anything left wet stays wet longer than the same job would elsewhere, and drying is planned into the visit rather than left to chance.
What we run into on Lady Bay mattress cleaning jobs
Most of the beds here sit on a solid topped divan, a platform of board and fabric with no slats and no gap under it, so the mattress can only breathe upward. Lift one that has been down a few years and the underside carries a map of the base: pale where the platform is sound, grey and faintly speckled along the joins and over the corners of the drawers, and heaviest at the head end nearest the outside wall. It is not a stain and it wipes at nothing. It is the reason the method here runs drier than a standard job. The same mattress on a slatted frame in the same room does not do it.
How a Lady Bay mattress cleaning job actually runs
Two things want settling before the visit. The first is the room. We work the mattress where it lies, so the bed has to be reachable from all four sides, and in a bedroom this size that usually means a chest of drawers or a chair going out onto the landing for an hour. Tell us if the wardrobe is fitted into a chimney alcove and cannot move, because it decides which side we set up on. The second is what happens after we go. The window wants to be on the catch and the door open for the rest of the day, and if the heating runs on a timer it is worth bringing the evening period forward, because moving air matters more than warm air and the two together are quicker than either alone. The bookings themselves split cleanly. Owner occupiers ask after an illness, a child, or a mattress that has been turned for years and never cleaned. Landlords ask between tenancies, where the mattress is a listed item on the inventory and an incoming tenant will photograph it on day one. Both get the same method. The landlord jobs get the photographs as well.
Who books it here
The housing here is mostly Edwardian terraces and interwar semis on a short grid of quiet streets, laid out between the river and the flood embankment, with bay fronts, tunnel entries between pairs and very little later infill, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.
We run Lady Bay on the same round as West Bridgford, The Meadows and Sneinton.
What we check on every Lady Bay job
The drawers in the base are worth opening while we are there, because in most of these bedrooms they are the storage. There is no fitted wardrobe, the alcoves either side of the chimney breast take a rail at best, and so bedding, out of season clothes and everything else ends up in two drawers a few inches off the floorboards, in the coolest corner of a cool room, and stays there for years. The drawer bases are thin board and they bow under the weight, which puts the textiles in contact with them, and what comes out from the bottom of a pile feels cool and slightly heavy rather than dry. On the carpet underneath, the castors leave four compressed dents and a clean rectangle of unwalked pile, which is where everything shed off the bed has quietly been collecting. All of it gets done while the mattress is off.
What the mattress cleaning covers
A sample of what is included
- The mattress itself: Air movement across the surface before we leave
- The mattress itself: HEPA vacuum over both faces, the sides, seams, piping and handles
- The rest of the bed: Skirting and the wall line behind the headboard
- The rest of the bed: Divan base sides and top platform vacuumed and spot cleaned
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What mattress cleaning costs in Lady Bay
Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£40 to £70
Typical per mattress in Lady Bay. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical per mattress |
|---|---|
| Minimum call-out | £60 to £90 |
| Cot or child's mattress | £15 to £30 |
| Single | £25 to £45 |
| Double | £40 to £70 |
| King | £50 to £85 |
| Super king | £60 to £100 |
One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Divan base or headboard, each | £25 to £50 |
| Set stain treatment, per area | £10 to £30 |
| Deodorising treatment | £10 to £25 |
| Second and later mattresses, same visit | 20% to 30% less each |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can we sleep in it that night?
That depends on when we come rather than on the mattress. A morning slot gives the bed the rest of the day and the evening to finish, with the door open and the window on the catch, which is what we ask for. A late afternoon appointment in a room this cool is asking a bed to dry overnight with somebody on it, and that undoes the visit. We will tell you on the phone whether the slot you want actually works.
The bed is against the outside wall. Does that matter?
For the drying, yes. The head end is the coolest part of the bed and the slowest to give up moisture, so it takes the extra dry passes and the air is pointed that way. Afterwards, standing the bed a few inches clear of that wall permanently is worth the floor it costs, because air can then move behind the headboard instead of sitting still against cool plaster. It will not warm the room. It does change what the underside looks like in a year.
Can you take the mattress outside to do it?
No, and it would not help if we could. It has to come back through the same hall and up the same stairs, the air out there is no drier than the air in the bedroom for much of the year, and a mattress stood against a yard wall picks up whatever is on the brickwork. Everything happens in the room, which is why the clearance round the bed and the airflow afterwards do the work that space outside would do somewhere else.
Is a protector worth buying afterwards in a house like this?
Yes, and pick the type carefully. A fully waterproof plastic backed protector stops spills but traps the moisture a body puts out, and in a cool room that goes straight back into the top of the mattress instead of evaporating. A breathable membrane type keeps the liquid out and lets the vapour through. Whichever you buy, it wants washing with the bedding rather than once a season, because the protector then becomes the thing holding what the mattress used to hold.
Do you cover the whole of Lady Bay?
Yes, all of NG2 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does mattress cleaning cost in Lady Bay?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Lady Bay?
Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. One way in over the bridge and a grid that leads nowhere else, so the streets stay quiet and a space is usually there, and we group Lady Bay with West Bridgford, The Meadows and Sneinton on the rota.
