Mattress Cleaning for Clifton Village homes

Beds that went upstairs decades ago and will not come back down a winding flight, several of them old tufted mattresses with natural filling and no label left on them. Everything happens in the room, and drying governs the booking rather than the cleaning does.

Nearly all of this work is for households who have been in the same house a long time, and it shows in the beds. A staircase in an old village property turns, often twice, with a low ceiling over the winder, so a wide modern mattress either went up bent or never went up at all, and a good number of the beds arrived with the family. Several are old tufted mattresses with natural filling and a label long since gone. That settles the method before we start. Nothing is coming downstairs to be worked on, nothing is going out into the garden to air, and the whole job happens on the frame in a small room with one window. Drying, not cleaning, is what we plan the day around.

Clifton Village sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. Conservation rules decide more here than the age of the houses does. Original windows stay, so nobody has traded small panes for a sealed unit; walls are soft brick and stone in lime mortar that a pressure lance opens up; and nothing may be fixed to an elevation, which rules out permanent fittings.

What we run into on Clifton Village mattress cleaning jobs

An old tufted mattress tells you what it is if you look at the border. There are vents sewn into the sides so the filling can breathe, and buttons drawn right through the pad from one face to the other. Press down and the vents puff at you. Both features are where the trouble sits. The vents take in dust that no vacuum head reaches beyond the mouth of, and each button well is a channel running straight into wool, cotton felt or hair that will hold water for days without showing it. So the tufts are worked dry, treated with the least moisture the mark will accept, and the vents get a crevice tool rather than anything wet.

How a Clifton Village mattress cleaning job actually runs

Two things set the plan here, the stairs and the air. Portable extraction comes up in parts, because a machine that would go up a straight flight will not turn a winder with a low ceiling over it, and the hose then runs back down through the hall, so the treads and the handrail get covered first. We would sooner carry the machine up and set it on the landing than drag a full hose across a stair carpet twice. The air is the other half of it. Bedrooms in these houses are small, the windows are small with them, and a spare room heated only when somebody stays in it starts cold and stays cold for most of the day. So mattress work is booked for the morning, we ask for the heating to be running at its normal setting rather than turned up in the hour before we arrive, and air movement goes across the surface while we deal with the base and the headboard. Strip the bed beforehand and get the linen washed and properly dry, because there is no sense putting damp bedding back onto something we have spent the morning drying out.

Who books it here

The housing here is mostly listed and period property round the church and the hall, from small cottages to substantial houses in walled grounds, with twentieth century infill dropped in between them, and that is what shapes this job more than the floor area does.

We run Clifton Village on the same round as Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington.

What we check on every Clifton Village job

What we find under the sheet in these houses more than anywhere else is an electric underblanket, often one that has been on the bed for years. It has two consequences. The blanket itself is not a cleaning item: it comes off, it does not get treated, and if the fabric has gone brittle or the flex is cracked at the control it wants replacing rather than another winter of use. The mattress underneath shows what constant low heat does. Body oils and perspiration that would otherwise stay soft are baked into the ticking, and the result comes up as a faint pattern of parallel lines following the elements, set harder than anything either side of them. Those lighten rather than clear, and we say so before we start. Switching the blanket off and letting the bed go properly cold before the visit helps the cleaning; it does not undo the years.

What the mattress cleaning covers

A sample of what is included

  • The mattress itself: Colourfast test in a hidden area, usually along the base seam
  • The mattress itself: Label and construction checked before anything is applied
  • The rest of the bed: Protector or topper handled, washed or refitted as the label allows
  • The rest of the bed: Skirting and the wall line behind the headboard

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full mattress cleaning page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Clifton Village property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What mattress cleaning costs in Clifton Village

Mattress cleaning, priced by bed size. A mattress added to a carpet booking costs less, because the call-out is already covered. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£40 to £70

Typical per mattress in Clifton Village. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical per mattress
Minimum call-out£60 to £90
Cot or child's mattress£15 to £30
Single£25 to £45
Double£40 to £70
King£50 to £85
Super king£60 to £100

One mattress on its own is priced at the minimum call-out, not at the size row in the table, because the visit costs the same whether it cleans one bed or four. Two or three mattresses in a single booking is the point at which the per mattress rate starts to apply.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Divan base or headboard, each£25 to £50
Set stain treatment, per area£10 to £30
Deodorising treatment£10 to £25
Second and later mattresses, same visit20% to 30% less each

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

The mattress is old and the label has gone. What can you actually do with it?

Work it cautiously, which is the honest answer for anything unlabelled. Natural fillings hold moisture far longer than a modern sprung mattress and give it up slowly, so it gets dry work first and the smallest amount of water the marks will take. We will not extract it. If the ticking has gone fragile or the tufts have started pulling through, we say so before anything begins, because it is age rather than the cleaning that would open it up.

The bed cannot come down the stairs. Does that matter?

Not at all, and it is the normal position here. The method assumes the bed stays where it is. What we need is it pulled away from the wall and enough floor to walk both long sides, which in a small bedroom usually means a chair and a bedside lamp going out onto the landing first. If the room is too tight to get round the bed even then, tell us when you book instead of on the morning.

Do we take the electric blanket off, or will you?

Take it off before we arrive, along with the bedding, and put it somewhere out of the room. We will not clean or damp treat one, because putting moisture anywhere near an element and a flex is not a risk worth running in somebody's house. While it is off the bed, look at the age of it and the state of the flex where it meets the control. If either is doubtful, that is the moment to replace it rather than putting it back onto a freshly cleaned mattress.

The spare room is unheated all winter. When should we book it?

Warmer months if the bed is not urgently needed, and a morning slot whenever it is done. A cold room with one small window gives up moisture very slowly, and a mattress that would be ready in an afternoon in July can still feel cool to the hand at bedtime in February. If it has to happen in winter, run the heating in that room from the day before rather than from the morning of the visit, and expect to be told to leave it another night.

Do you cover the whole of Clifton Village?

Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does mattress cleaning cost in Clifton Village?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is how many mattresses go in one visit, the bed sizes, and whether anything needs treating rather than just extracting. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start mattress cleaning in Clifton Village?

Within a week, and we would rather bring it alongside a carpet booking than make a separate journey for one bed. The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive, and we group Clifton Village with Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington on the rota.
