Laundry & Ironing for St Ann's homes
A weekly slot works here when it is built around the courts rather than the streets, because the van has to stand somewhere and the bags cross a walkway. Bin day in a court closes it off entirely.
The households that buy this here are the ones with nowhere reliable to dry. Storage heating gives its warmth out through the day and has little left by the evening, back yards are small, paved and enclosed, and a full load on an airer in a cold room takes two days and puts its water into the walls while it does it. The other buyers are the predictable weekly patterns: school uniform, and workwear somebody wants kept out of the family machine altogether. A high share of this housing is rented and moves often, so the third strand is linen for lets, counted in and out on a rotation rather than washed by whoever happens to be at the property.
St Ann's sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are the St Ann's Allotments, Robin Hood Chase, the Wells Road and Woodborough Road, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on St Ann's laundry & ironing jobs
Washing that has dried slowly in a cold room reaches us smelling sour before the bag is open, and the smell is useful information. Fabric that stays damp for a day and a half grows bacteria down in the fibre, and once that has happened a cool wash with a scoop of conditioner does nothing except cover it for an afternoon. It wants a hot wash at whatever temperature the label allows, no conditioner, and then a quick dry rather than a slow one. It goes back genuinely clean. It also comes back the same way in a fortnight if nothing about the drying has changed, which is the part worth saying out loud.
How a St Ann's laundry & ironing job actually runs
The round here is organised by court rather than by street, because that is how the van moves and how the walk to each door actually works. Bags travel from a front door on a footpath back to a van standing in the parking area behind, and a fixed weekly slot only holds if the same run happens in the same order every week. Two things break it. A court full on a weekday afternoon, and bin day, when everything is out at the collection point and there is nowhere sensible to stop. So the day is set per court and we tell you what it is rather than ringing on the morning. Returns want a little thought too. Anything coming back on hangers needs somewhere to hang, and a hall in this stock is narrow with the stairs straight ahead of the door, so most households here take folded returns and keep hangers for shirts. For a let, agree the linen rotation and the number of sets before the first booking rather than after the first gap.
Who books it here
Regular fortnightly cleans in occupied family homes, and a steady run of tenancy-end work, because much of the housing here is rented rather than owned and turnover is constant. Deep cleans tend to be booked by an adult child arranging one for a parent, or ahead of a housing inspection rather than on a spring impulse.
We run St Ann's on the same round as Sneinton, Mapperley and Nottingham City Centre.
What we check on every St Ann's job
Counting happens at the door, onto a sheet, with a copy left with you, and anything already stained, bobbled, holed or missing a button is written down before the bag leaves the step. Pockets come out at the machine, and on this round they produce a consistent haul: grit off the concrete paths, seed packets and string from an allotment plot, and the loose change that jams a pump. New and strongly dyed items run on their own for the first few washes. Workwear stays apart from household washing, which is usually the whole reason it was sent out, and towels go through hot and separate from clothes. For a let, sets are counted out and counted back rather than estimated, because a rotation one set short is not discovered until a changeover day, when it is far too late to fix.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Linen, towels and household items: Towels washed hot and kept separate from clothing
- Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
- Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
- Linen, towels and household items: Duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases washed and either pressed or folded flat
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in St Ann's
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in St Ann's. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |

| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Our washing smells musty even when it has just been done. Can you fix it?
At our end, yes, and it is a common reason people here start using a service at all. Slow drying in a cold room is what causes it, and the answer is a hot wash where the label allows one, no fabric conditioner, and drying quickly rather than over two days. What we cannot fix is the drying at your end, so if the same load goes straight back onto an airer in an unheated room, expect it back.
Nobody is in during the day. Where do we leave the bag?
Not on a walkway. A doorstep facing a public footpath is not somewhere anybody should leave a bag of clothes, and that rules out the arrangement which works perfectly well on a driveway. The usual answers here are a handover at a fixed time, a key safe you already have fitted, or a bag left inside with somebody at home. If a bag is collected unattended, the count happens at our end and is photographed instead of agreed at the door.
Can you do the linen for a let rather than our own washing?
Yes, and it is a different arrangement from a household bag. It runs as a counted rotation: a fixed number of sets per bed, used sets collected, clean sets delivered, and a sheet counted both ways. How many sets you need is agreed at the start, and it has to cover the nights when one set is still with us. Give us the bed sizes as well, because a king fitted sheet in a double set only shows up at eleven at night.
We have no washing machine at the moment. Can you take everything?
Yes, and the first collection is usually two or three times the size of a weekly one, so tell us before the day rather than handing over four bags on a doorstep. It gets weighed, split into loads and turned round more slowly than a normal week. After that a fixed slot works out better than booking each time, since the round is already passing and the bag goes whether anybody remembered to ring or not.
Do you cover the whole of St Ann's?
Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in St Ann's?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in St Ann's?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Much of the estate separates cars from front doors: parking sits in courts and rear bays while the house opens onto a footpath, and we group St Ann's with Sneinton, Mapperley and Nottingham City Centre on the rota.
