Laundry & Ironing for Porchester homes

Two income families who already own a machine, buying ironing and bed linen rather than washing. Hard water is why the towels feel like cardboard. Collections work best from inside the side gate, away from whichever bin morning your street keeps.

The households buying this here already own a washing machine, so what actually gets bought is the part they cannot do: ironing, and bed linen. Both adults working is the pattern in these semis, and a fortnight of shirts, uniform and kit is a Sunday evening nobody wants back. Linen is the other half and the more useful half, because a double duvet cover is slow going on a domestic board in a bedroom and it never comes out flat however long you spend on it. The second buyer is smaller and steadier, the practices and small firms in the converted houses along the frontage, which have tunics, towels and workwear that should not be going through anybody's machine at home. The two get counted, returned and scheduled differently.

Porchester sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. The local reference points are Porchester Road along the ridge, the shops on it, and Carlton Road at the foot, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Porchester laundry & ironing jobs

Hard water is what you feel in the towels. The supply in this part of the city carries enough dissolved mineral to leave deposit in the fibre, and on a looped pile the result is a towel gone stiff and slightly grey while the sheets out of the same load look perfectly fine. It is not detergent residue, and adding more detergent makes it worse rather than better, because the mineral takes the detergent out of use before it reaches the cloth. Towels run as their own wash, hot where the label allows, dosed for the water rather than the drum, and they come back soft.

How a Porchester laundry & ironing job actually runs

This runs on a fixed weekly slot, and the slot is set around two things: your bin morning and the school run. Because the boundary cuts through these streets, collection days are not the same from one road to the next, and a morning with wheelie bins out along a street where commuters have already parked both sides leaves nowhere for a van to stop. So we ask which day yours is at the first booking and then avoid it permanently. The collection point matters as much. Most households here nominate somewhere inside the side gate, under cover and out of sight of the road, which means nobody has to be in. Returns are the fiddly half. Ironing comes back on hangers under a cover, and getting a rail up a garden flight and through a front door into a narrow hall is not practical, so it comes in carried on the hangers and goes over the newel post or a door top unless you tell us where you would rather it went. School uniform keeps its own slot through term time, because that is the load nobody can afford to have arrive late.

Who books it here

Regular fortnightly cleaning in family semis where both adults work, and deep cleans booked when a kitchen built into the old outbuildings has stopped looking clean whatever gets done to the surfaces. Window work runs more often on the front than the back, because the road side films up faster than the garden side.

We run Porchester on the same round as Mapperley, Carlton and Thorneywood.

What we check on every Porchester job

The other thing the bags show is what slow drying does to a wash. A load that comes out of the machine and then sits on an airer in a cool room for two days does not merely dry late, it picks up a stale smell that lives in the fibre and returns the moment the garment is warm or damp again, which is why a shirt can seem fine in the wardrobe and turn by the end of a working day. That is bacterial rather than dirt, and rewashing it cool with extra softener sets it in further instead of shifting it. What clears it is a hot wash where the label allows one, no softener at all on towels, and getting the load dry quickly rather than gently. That is most of what a service wash is really buying in a three bedroom house with one machine, a radiator's worth of drying space and nowhere sensible to stand a dryer.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Bags weighed at collection, with the weight and the price confirmed before anything is washed
  • Linen, towels and household items: Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Porchester property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What laundry & ironing costs in Porchester

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Porchester. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Laundry & Ironingin Porchester

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Do we have to be in for the collection and the return?

For the first one, yes, so the bag can be weighed with you and the count sheet agreed. After that most households here nominate a spot inside the side gate, under cover and out of sight of the road, and we work from a key safe code or a gate left unbolted on the day. What does not work is a bag left on a front step at the top of a flight of steps up from the pavement.

Can you do the bed linen and not the clothes?

Yes, and it is the commonest way this gets used here. A stripped set from each bed goes out and a pressed set comes back, on a rotation counted at both ends so nothing quietly ends up in somebody else's bag. Duvet covers and sheets are priced separately from clothing because they are slow work. The duvets themselves stay out of it in king and super king sizes, and feather ones at any size.

We already have a machine. What are we actually paying for?

Time and finishing, rather than washing. The machine in a house like this runs most days and the bottleneck is drying and ironing, not the drum. What goes out tends to be the slow items, bed linen, work shirts and uniform, while the daily colour wash stays at home. Plenty of households here use it as a linen service only, on a counted rotation, and never send a garment at all. Others send a bag a week and keep the ironing board in the cupboard.

Will our things be kept separate from other people's?

Yes, that is how it works. Bags are weighed and counted at your door, stay as your load through the wash, and are folded back into your own bag with the count sheet inside. Tell us how the house sorts and we fold to that, by person or by room, because putting three people's clothes back into the right drawers is the part that costs you a Sunday afternoon. Workwear is kept apart from household washing as a matter of course.

Do you cover the whole of Porchester?

Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Porchester?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Porchester?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Most pairs of semis have a side gate and a passage to the back garden, so equipment goes round rather than through the house, and we group Porchester with Mapperley, Carlton and Thorneywood on the rota.
