Laundry & Ironing for Mapperley homes
Flats carved out of the villas have a washer under the worktop, no dryer and no garden, so the washing dries indoors in a tall cold room and the condensation lands on the sash. That is why most of the work here gets sent out.
Who buys laundry in Mapperley splits cleanly. In the converted flats it is people with no drying space at all: the garden goes with the ground floor, there is no room for a dryer beside a washer under the worktop, and a full load dried on an airer puts litres of water into a tall single glazed room. That water lands on the coldest surface, which is the glass and the reveal beside it, and the mould that follows is a bigger problem than the laundry ever was. In the houses it is a different reason. Three levels means the machine is on one and the airing cupboard is on another, and sending the bulky items out is simply about carrying less up and down.
Mapperley sits in NG3, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. The local reference points are Mapperley Top, Woodborough Road and Mapperley Golf Club, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Mapperley laundry & ironing jobs
Handover is the part that needs arranging rather than assuming. A bag left at the top of an external flight is in full view of the street, and a bag left inside a communal door in a converted villa is available to everybody in the building and to anyone who follows them in. So we agree either a fixed time when somebody is home, or a genuinely enclosed spot, meaning a porch with a door that latches rather than an open one. On the steeper roads there is nowhere to wait either. Stopping on a gradient near a bend blocks the road properly, so returns here run to a time rather than a window.
How a Mapperley laundry & ironing job actually runs
Collection days are worth knowing here, because the area sits across two collection authorities and which side of the boundary a street falls on decides who empties the bins and on what morning. On a narrow road with cars down both sides, a lorry working its way up the hill closes the street for a while, and a van trying to hold a space near your door in that window will not manage it. So we ask which day yours is and keep your slot off it, which sounds like a small thing and is the difference between a fixed return time and an apology. Parking shapes the rest of it. A gradient with a bend in it has nowhere legal to stop at all, so on those roads the handover happens at the nearest safe space and we walk the last part, which is fine as long as it is built into the slot rather than discovered in it. For the short lets in the villas the pattern changes again: linen runs on a counted rotation and has to be at the flat before the changeover rather than during it, because every changeover in a building happens inside the same few hours.
Who books it here
Regular domestic work in the interwar semis, and carpet cleaning more often than average, because the hill means more grit walked in and stair carpets that take the brunt of it.
We run Mapperley on the same round as Sherwood, Carlton and Sneinton.
What we check on every Mapperley job
Indoor drying leaves a signature we can see in a bag before anybody mentions damp. Cotton dried slowly on an airer over a couple of days arrives with the creases set hard into the fibre rather than hanging loose, so it takes more steam and more time at the board than the same shirt off a line, which is why ironing time on a flat's bag runs above the same items out of a house with a garden. Towels are the other tell. One that never dried properly holds a sour smell that survives an ordinary wash, because the growth is in the fibre rather than on it, and it wants a hot wash on its own and a proper dry rather than conditioner laid over the top. The practical point about returns up here is wind. Shirts brought back on hangers under a cover are awkward on an exposed external flight, so we fold flat by default and hang only where you ask.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
- Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
- Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
- Service wash, charged by weight: Bags weighed at collection, with the weight and the price confirmed before anything is washed
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Mapperley
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Mapperley. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can you leave the bag if we are out?
Only somewhere enclosed and dry, and on this stock that rules out most of the obvious places. External steps are in view of the pavement, and a communal hallway in a converted villa is not secure however solid the front door looks, because it opens for every resident and every delivery. A neighbour who is in, a porch that latches or a fixed return time all work. If none of those exist, we bring it back rather than leave it and hope.
Will sending the washing out fix the damp in the flat?
It removes one source, and it is usually the largest one, but it is not a damp cure and we would not sell it as one. A load dried indoors releases litres of water into the room, so taking that out of a tall cold flat makes a real difference to the window and reveal. What it does not change is heating, background ventilation or a wall that runs cold. If mould keeps returning after the airer has gone, the cause is the room.
Can everything come back on hangers?
It can, and on the hill houses it is often the wrong choice. A rail of covered shirts is difficult on an exposed external flight in wind, and worse through a communal door somebody has to hold open. Folded flat in a bag travels better, arrives with fewer new creases from being pressed against a doorframe, and goes up a winder flight far more easily. Where you have somewhere to hang them the moment they arrive, we will bring them hung, if you say so when you book.
We run a short let. How much linen should we hold?
Three sets per bed is the number that actually works: one on the bed, one back with us, one clean on the shelf. Two leaves you dependent on a turnaround that a busy week will break, and on changeover day in a converted villa there is no margin, because every flat in the building is being turned inside the same window. Sets are counted out and counted back on a sheet, so a missing pillowcase is traceable to a date rather than argued about afterwards.
Do you cover the whole of Mapperley?
Yes, all of NG3 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council and Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Mapperley?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Mapperley?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Steep streets and some properties well above road level, and we group Mapperley with Sherwood, Carlton and Sneinton on the rota.
