Laundry & Ironing for Gedling homes
The washing here has a walk in it. Dog towels, waterproofs and boot socks come back off the park paths carrying a pale clay that has to be knocked out dry, because bagged wet it sets and it transfers in the drum.
Who buys this here is a household whose weekly load has an outdoor half to it. Walking gear, dog towels, muddy football kit and the coats that go over all of it are a different washing problem from clothes, and they are the reason the machine is running while the ironing has not been started. The other half of the customer base is on the estate, where the kitchen holds an integrated washer, there is no utility room, the garden is small enough that a full line touches the fence, and drying indoors in a house built to hold air in puts every drop of it back into the rooms. Both want the bulk taken out and returned sorted, on a day that fits the working week rather than ours.
Gedling sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. The local reference points are Gedling Country Park, All Hallows Church, Gedling House Woods and the Chase Farm estate, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Gedling laundry & ironing jobs
Waterproofs are the item ruined by kindness. A technical shell is a membrane with a water repellent finish on the face fabric, and ordinary detergent leaves residue in that finish while fabric conditioner coats it outright. Either one makes the outer fabric wet out and soak through, and the owner concludes the coat has failed when it has only been washed wrong. The label says so in small print and nobody reads it. We read it before anything goes in, run technical items separately at the stated temperature with no conditioner, and say plainly when something needs a proofing product we do not supply. Clay gets knocked off dry first, or it travels round the drum.
How a Gedling laundry & ironing job actually runs
Collection and return are the parts to pin down here, and the two halves of the village behave differently. Most of the older semis have somewhere a bag can sit out of sight, a porch, a side gate or a garage, so a collection happens whether anybody is in or not once we have agreed the spot in writing. The newer houses often have a canopy rather than a porch and a front door opening straight into the hall, so there is nowhere dry to leave anything, and the arrangement becomes a handover at a fixed time or a bag through a side gate into the bin store. Parking decides the timing on that side as well, because a van cannot sit on a narrow estate road while somebody goes to find a bag. The other fixed point is the borough collection day. When the bins are out those roads lose their passing width, and nobody wants clean linen carried past a row of them, so your slot is set away from it once we know which day yours is. Counts are agreed at the door both ways and the sheet travels with the bag.
Who books it here
Regular fortnightly cleaning in family houses is the bulk of it, with deep cleans booked in spring and carpet work more often than average. The country park is the reason for the last one, because a household walking those paths daily puts more grit and clay through the hall in a month than a city street manages in six.
We run Gedling on the same round as Carlton, Netherfield and Mapperley.
What we check on every Gedling job
Towels tell you what a household's water is doing. The supply on this side of the city is hard, and hard water needs more detergent to work, so people either underdose and leave soil in the pile or overdose and leave detergent in it. Both finish the same way. The pile goes stiff and slightly grey, it stops taking up water, and the usual answer is a heavy dose of conditioner, which coats the fibre in exactly the substance that stops a towel absorbing anything. A towel pushing water around rather than soaking it up has almost always been over conditioned rather than worn out. Washed hot, on their own, dosed for the actual hardness and with the conditioner left out altogether, the same towels come back soft within a couple of cycles. It costs nothing to correct and it is the thing we correct most often. Whites are the same story a stage further on, since the grey people blame on age is generally residue rather than wear.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Linen, towels and household items: Duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases washed and either pressed or folded flat
- Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
- Ironing: Steam on the reverse of anything that shines, and a pressing cloth on wool
- Ironing: Bed linen and duvet covers, slow work and priced separately from clothes
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Gedling property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What laundry & ironing costs in Gedling
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Gedling. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
We have a machine. Why send it out?
Because of the part that is not washing. A machine handles a load. It does not sort, dry, fold or iron, and it does not create the space to do those things in a house with a small kitchen. What tends to go out is the bulk that clogs the week, the bed linen, the towels and the uniform, and it comes back counted, folded and ready to put away. Plenty of households send half and keep half.
Can you take a duvet?
Singles and some doubles, where the drum genuinely takes them, and we say which at the booking rather than after we have your bag. King and super king go to a launderette with a large machine, and feather is out at any size, because neither washes properly in a domestic drum and a duvet that has not dried right through goes musty in the middle where nobody can see it. Covers and sheets are no trouble.
How does the count work if something goes missing?
A sheet is written at the door when the bag is picked up and it comes back inside the bag with the clean load, so there is a record at both ends rather than a memory. Odd socks are the honest exception, since they arrive odd rather more often than they leave odd. Anything that has not come back gets chased rather than shrugged at, and small items go in a mesh bag if you send them regularly.
Can you keep the children's uniform on a fixed weekly slot?
That is the arrangement most families here settle into through term time, because it is the load with a deadline attached. One slot a week, the same day, counted by child if you tell us how the house works. What we ask is that anything with a broken zip, a loose button or unsecured trim comes out of the bag first, since those are on the list we cannot take: a loose fixing in a drum damages more than the item it came off.
Do you cover the whole of Gedling?
Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Gedling?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Gedling?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Mostly straightforward, because the older semis have a drive or a verge to pull onto, and we group Gedling with Carlton, Netherfield and Mapperley on the rota.
