Laundry & Ironing for Carlton homes

A mid terrace door opens onto the footway with no porch and no side gate, so nothing can be left. Collection and return are handovers at a fixed time, or to a neighbour, and both are planned around bin day.

Access decides this service here far more than the washing does. A mid terrace door opens onto the footway, there is no porch to stand a bag in and no side gate to walk round to, so a return cannot simply be left somewhere sensible. Collections and returns are handovers at a time somebody is in, or to a neighbour who has agreed to it beforehand, and that gets settled at the first booking rather than improvised on a wet Tuesday. The semis toward Gedling are the easy half of the round: a porch, a side gate, sometimes a garage, and a bag that can be left dry and out of sight. The buying pattern splits along the same line, service wash one side and ironing the other.

Carlton sits in NG4, under Gedling Borough Council. The local reference points are Carlton Hill, Colwick Woods and Carlton Square, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Carlton laundry & ironing jobs

Bin day is the other fixed point in the week. On these terraces there is no side access, so wheelie bins live at the front and come out onto a footway that is narrow before anything is put on it, and on collection morning the street loses most of a lane to the row of them. A van cannot pull in, and anyone carrying bagged clean linen past a line of bins is not carrying it cleanly. We set your weekly slot away from your collection day once we know which day it is, which sounds fussy until the first time a bag has to go back in the van because there is nowhere to stand.

How a Carlton laundry & ironing job actually runs

The practical shape of this round in Carlton is a fixed weekly slot and a route that avoids the hill at the wrong hour. Collections run from the side streets on foot to the door, so bags want to be waiting by the door rather than upstairs, and a full bag of wet towels is a good deal heavier than people picture while they are filling it. The return is the half that needs thinking about. Ironing comes back on hangers under a cover, and a hanging rail will not go through a terrace front door and up a stair turn without something catching on something, so it comes in carried flat on the hangers instead. Bin day is the other fixed point. With no side access the bins live at the front, and on collection morning the footway and the road are both narrower than usual, so we set your slot away from that day once we know which one it is. Households on the Gedling side with a porch or a side gate can nominate a place instead and never need to be in at all.

Who books it here

An even split between regular domestic cleaning in the interwar semis and end of tenancy work on the rented terraces along Carlton Hill.

We run Carlton on the same round as Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold.

What we check on every Carlton job

The count sheet is the whole system, and it matters most on the items that look identical to each other. School uniform in a house with two children at the same school is the standard case: the same polo shirts, the same jumper, nothing name taped, and one item short by the end of term. Everything is counted at collection onto a sheet you keep a copy of, with existing marks, missing buttons and worn hems written down before the bag leaves the house, then counted back at return. Socks go in a mesh bag and come back in the same one. Workwear stays apart from household washing, which is the reason most people send it out to begin with. Bed linen is counted by set rather than by piece, so a fitted sheet cannot disappear inside a duvet cover, which is exactly how sets lose pieces at home.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Non-bio and fragrance-free detergent on request, at no extra cost
  • Linen, towels and household items: Pillows and single duvets where the drum size genuinely allows it, said plainly at booking
  • Ironing: Returned on hangers under a cover, or folded flat, whichever you ask for
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in Carlton

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Carlton. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

There is nowhere to leave a bag at our house. How does it work?

By fixing a time rather than a place. We agree a weekly slot when somebody is in, and both the collection and the return happen at the door with the count sheet checked in front of you. Where that genuinely cannot work, a neighbour who has agreed in advance is the usual answer and we record who is holding it. What we will not do is leave clean laundry on a doorstep over a pavement or tucked behind a bin.

We let the house out. Can the linen run on a rotation instead?

Yes, and counted rather than weighed. Sets go out and come back as a swap on the same visit, so there is one on the bed, one in the cupboard and one with us at any time. Everything is counted onto a sheet at both ends, which is what stops a set quietly losing a pillowcase across a season of changeovers. Tell us the bed sizes and how many sets you own before the first collection.

Can you do the ironing without the washing?

Yes, and it is the more common booking on the semis. It is priced per item or by the hour, whichever works out cheaper for what you actually hand over, and bed linen is counted separately from clothes because a double duvet cover is slow work next to a shirt. Anything with a dry clean only label, a fused jacket or a broken zip comes back untouched with a note on the sheet rather than being risked.

What happens on a week when we are away?

Tell us before the slot rather than on the day. A fixed weekly collection is much easier to hold if the occasional week is skipped by arrangement, and a skipped week is not charged for. Where a neighbour is holding the bag, say who, and we record it on the sheet. What causes trouble is a return with nobody in and nowhere safe to leave it, which on a terrace means the bag comes back with us and goes out the following week.

Do you cover the whole of Carlton?

Yes, all of NG4 and the surrounding streets, under Gedling Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Carlton?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Carlton?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. On-street, usually available, and we group Carlton with Mapperley, Sneinton and Arnold on the rota.
