Laundry & Ironing for Sherwood homes
Two working adults, a week of shirts and a long back garden with a line that earns its keep from April and nothing from October. Collection is off the front step, up from the pavement, and around the bin day.
Who buys this here is two working adults with a week of shirts between them and no utility room to deal with them in. The washing machine sits under the worktop in the back addition, there is nowhere to stand a dryer beside it, and the garden makes up the difference for half the year. These gardens are long and open at the back, so a line here genuinely works from April through to September in a way a walled yard nearer town never does. From October it stops, and everything that was going on the line goes onto an airer in a room somebody is sitting in. That seasonal cliff, rather than convenience, is what puts a regular collection in place around here.
Sherwood sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Mansfield Road, Woodthorpe Grange Park and the Sherwood shops, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Sherwood laundry & ironing jobs
Ironing tells you which half of the year a shirt dried in. Line dried in summer, a cotton shirt comes in with the weave open and presses in one pass. The same shirt dried indoors on an airer in November arrives with a hard horizontal set across the back and both sleeves where it hung over the bar, and the fibres have dried compressed rather than relaxed, so it takes damp heat and a second pass to move. Bed linen shows it worse because it hangs in a heavier fold. It is also why the autumn baskets weigh more than the summer ones for the same household: nothing is quite dry when it is packed.
How a Sherwood laundry & ironing job actually runs
The practical questions here are the front step and the bin day. Collection happens at the door, and the door is at the top of a flight of steps up from the pavement with a path between, so bags want to be somewhere they can be lifted in one trip rather than spread through a hall. A slot agreed for the same day each week works better than an open ended window, because these are households where both adults are out and the collection has to be predictable rather than answered. Bin day is the one to tell us about. Nottingham City Council collects on a fixed cycle, there is no rear vehicle access on these streets, so on the morning of a collection the bins are all out along the front path and the kerb, and both the parking and the walk to the door get tighter. We schedule around it once you tell us which day it is. On a fortnightly clean it is simplest to hang the laundry collection off the same visit, with the bags out and the returned load put away in the room you would rather it lived in than on the kitchen table.
Who books it here
Professional households wanting a regular fortnightly clean, and a steady run of deep cleans in period houses where the annual jobs have been left a little too long.
We run Sherwood on the same round as Mapperley, Arnold and New Basford.
What we check on every Sherwood job
The load that arrives in the middle of winter is a different load. It is heavier for the same volume, because a household that has been drying indoors has usually given up mid cycle and put things away not quite dry, and it comes in smelling faintly sour rather than of anything at all. Towels are the marker. A towel that has taken a day and a half on an airer in a cool room goes stiff, and the smell comes back within an hour of it being used, which is the point at which people start washing everything hotter and shortening the life of it. What actually fixes that is drying fast rather than washing hot. Sorting is the other thing we look at on a first collection: whites gone grey and coloured bed linen running at the same temperature as the towels is a very common opening position, and separating those is worth more than any change of product.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Ironing: Priced per item or per hour, whichever is cheaper for what you actually have
- Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection
- Service wash, charged by weight: Folded and bagged by person or by room if you tell us how the house works
- Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Sherwood
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Sherwood. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
We have a machine. What are we actually paying for?
The drying and the pressing, mostly. Washing a load is the easy part in any house. Finding somewhere to dry it between October and March in a house with no utility room is not, and neither is an evening of shirts. A service wash goes out wet and comes back dry, sorted and pressed, which takes the airer out of the sitting room. Plenty of households here send the shirts and the bed linen only and keep the rest.
Can you collect if we are both out all day?
That is the normal arrangement rather than the exception. Bags go out at an agreed time or are left somewhere we have agreed in advance, and the return works the same way. Tell us the day your bins are collected, because on that morning the front path and the kerb outside are both taken up, and a collection runs quicker if it moves to the afternoon instead.
Can you do our duvet and pillows as well?
Pillows and a single duvet usually, and the drum decides it rather than willingness does. King and super king duvets, and feather duvets of any size, need a launderer with a machine big enough to move them properly, and a duvet with no room to tumble comes back damp in the middle whatever the label promised. Those go to a specialist rather than to us, and we will say so when the bag is weighed at collection.
What happens to anything that is not machine washable?
It comes back to you unwashed with a note on it rather than being risked. Dry clean only labels, suits and structured jackets, silk and unlined wool, and anything with a broken zip or a loose button all get set aside at sorting. So does workwear carrying oil or solvent, which contaminates a drum for whatever runs in it next. Checking pockets and pulling those items out before the bag goes out saves a return trip.
Do you cover the whole of Sherwood?
Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Sherwood?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Sherwood?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. On-street parking on the roads off Mansfield Road, generally fine outside the evening rush, and we group Sherwood with Mapperley, Arnold and New Basford on the rota.
