Laundry & Ironing for Hyson Green homes
Nobody here has a utility room. The machine is under a worktop in a kitchen that used to be a bedroom, there is no dryer, and the washing dries on an airer in the only room being heated. That, and counted linen for lets.
The buyers here are not households with somewhere to dry. They are flats where the machine is a slimline unit under a worktop and there is no dryer and no line, rooms let singly in a converted house where one machine serves everybody, short lets close enough to the tram to sell on it and needing linen back on a named day, and people working shifts who are never in when a cycle finishes. What all of those want is the washing out of the building rather than a better way of doing it inside. A weekly slot on a fixed day is what makes that work, because the round covers the same streets on the same morning and your bag goes whether you remembered to arrange it or not.
Hyson Green sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Hyson Green Market, the Radford Road tram stop and Forest Recreation Ground, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Hyson Green laundry & ironing jobs
The machine tells you why people send it out. In a converted flat it is plumbed in after the fact, standing on suspended timber floorboards rather than a concrete floor, often on the first or second storey with somebody's living room directly underneath. On a spin it walks, knocks against the units and carries straight through the floor, which is why washing in these buildings gets done at hours that annoy neighbours, and why a machine sitting out of level becomes everybody's complaint. Take the load out of the flat and the noise, the drying and the argument about the hour all leave with it.
How a Hyson Green laundry & ironing job actually runs
Collection here is a doorstep handover at an agreed time rather than a bag left out. A shared street door onto a pavement means anything on the step is effectively on the street, and a round like this cannot have the van sitting while somebody is found, so the slot is fixed and both sides keep to it. If you are out that morning, a neighbour in the building, or a safe place inside the common hall agreed in advance, both work better than improvising on the day. The bins set the other half of the timetable. These terraces put wheeled bins onto the pavement on collection morning and the kerb is unusable while they are out, so those streets get planned for a different day rather than fought over. Weekly slots are what the round is built on. An ad hoc collection is possible and it is what gets dropped first when a week runs short, so anybody depending on a uniform or a set of workwear coming back on a named day is better off on a fixed slot booked at the start of a term or a tenancy than ringing on a Sunday night.
Who books it here
A high proportion of let property, so landlord turnarounds and end of tenancy cleans outnumber regular domestic work. Multi-occupancy conversions mean more kitchens and bathrooms per building than the address suggests.
We run Hyson Green on the same round as Radford, New Basford and Sherwood.
What we check on every Hyson Green job
Two physical things show up again and again in bags collected round here, and both come from the water. Towels come back stiff and slow to absorb, because hard water and fabric conditioner have left a coating on the fibre, and the fix is a hot wash with no conditioner and less detergent rather than more of either. Whites that have only ever been washed cool have gone grey, which is the same problem plus a machine that never runs hot enough to clear itself. That is the second find: a shared machine in a let house develops a dark smear inside the door seal and a smell that transfers to everything in the drum, because it runs at thirty degrees for years and nothing ever burns off. Sending washing out does not repair that machine, so we say what we are seeing rather than working around it. Everything is counted onto a sheet at the door, existing damage written down before it leaves, and counted back at return.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
- Linen, towels and household items: Towels washed hot and kept separate from clothing
- Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
- Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Hyson Green property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What laundry & ironing costs in Hyson Green
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Hyson Green. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
There is nowhere in the flat to dry a wash. Does sending it out actually help?
It is the main reason people here book it. Water spun out of a load has to evaporate somewhere, and in a flat with no dryer it goes into the air and settles on the coldest surfaces it can find, which are the window reveals and the outside walls. An airer running in a heated room through winter is a large part of why those rooms feel damp. Sending the load out takes that moisture away with it rather than moving it around.
Four of us share the house and one machine. Can we each send a separate bag?
Yes, and it is what keeps a shared house out of arguments. Each bag is counted onto its own sheet at the door, washed as its own order and returned the same way, so nothing gets mixed and nobody is chasing a sock through somebody else's washing. One collection covers all four, which is what keeps it sensible. What we need is one person letting us in at the agreed time rather than four each assuming another will.
Can you take linen for a let flat as well as a household bag?
Yes, on separate counts and separate sheets. Linen for a let works as a rotation with a set number of sets per bed, cycled rather than washed on demand, so a changeover never waits on a machine. Towels are kept apart from clothing and run hot. What is worth agreeing at the start is the number of sets in circulation, because a same day turnaround with only two of them fails the first time a collection slips by a day.
Our washing smells damp by the time it has dried. Is that the wash?
Usually it is the drying rather than the washing. Anything that stays wet for a day in a cool room begins to smell whatever it was washed in, and an airer in a room with the window shut is exactly that situation. A machine left shut between loads adds to it. Washing off site and returning it dried and folded removes both causes, and we can usually say whether what you are smelling is coming back from your own machine instead.
Do you cover the whole of Hyson Green?
Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Hyson Green?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Hyson Green?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. On-street only, and tight, and we group Hyson Green with Radford, New Basford and Sherwood on the rota.
