Laundry & Ironing for New Basford homes

Sharers queueing for one machine, room only lets with none at all, and mill flats with no outside space whatever. The yards are walled and shaded, so drying rather than washing is what people here are paying to be rid of.

Who buys this here is not the household with a utility room. It is sharers in a let terrace queueing for one machine, people in a room only let with no machine at all, and flats in the mill conversions where the appliance is a washer dryer in a cupboard and there is no outside space of any kind. The common factor is drying rather than washing. A yard on these streets is small, walled and shaded, so a line is close to useless from October onwards, and the alternative is an airer standing in the room everybody sits in. That is what people are actually paying to be rid of, and it is why the return day is set by drying capacity rather than by machine time.

New Basford sits in NG7, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are the Basford tram stop, Vernon Park and the old lace mills, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on New Basford laundry & ironing jobs

What arrives in the bags from these streets is mostly bedding and towels rather than shirts, which shifts both the weight and the drying more than anything else does. It also arrives with a particular problem. Washing that was part dried on an indoor airer and then folded away carries the smell back into the fibre, and pale cottons pick up a faint grey line where the fabric sat damp against a dusty rail. Neither of those comes out in a cool wash. Both come out with a proper hot wash on the items whose labels allow one, followed by real drying. Say at collection which items have been through that, because they get run on their own.

How a New Basford laundry & ironing job actually runs

The round works here because these streets sit close together and the van covers them in one loop, so a fixed weekly day is genuinely fixed rather than aspirational. What has to be settled before the first collection is the doorstep. There is no porch and no front garden on most of these houses, so a bag left out is a bag on a public footway, and we will not agree to that as a standing arrangement. A key safe, a neighbour who is reliably in, or a slot early or late enough to catch somebody at home are the three that actually work. In the mill flats it needs whoever is in to answer the door entry, because there is no concierge and a communal stair is not somewhere laundry gets left. Collection day and bin day are worth keeping apart. On these streets the wheelie bins stand on the footway because there is nowhere else for them, which narrows the pavement and takes the space the van would otherwise use. In a shared house, one bag per person with a name on it is the difference between a clean return and an argument nobody needs.

Who books it here

A mix of everything, because it is our own patch: regular domestic rounds, landlord turnarounds on the terraces, and small commercial units in the old lace buildings.

We run New Basford on the same round as Hyson Green, Sherwood and Bulwell.

What we check on every New Basford job

The return is where the shape of these houses shows up. A hanging return needs a rail, and in a terrace there is no hall to hang anything in: the front door opens into the room people are sitting in, so shirts under a cover end up over a door or on the newel post at the foot of the stairs, and a crease goes across the shoulder within a day. So we ask where they are actually going before deciding between hangers and folded flat, and for most households on these streets folded is the better answer. Bedding is the other one. A double cover coming back from a shared house is nearly always inside out with a sheet and a pillowcase balled into one corner, and the corners are where small items hide, so every cover is turned, shaken out and counted before anything gets folded. That is also the point at which a split seam or a failed stud is found, and it goes onto the sheet rather than being quietly folded away.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
  • Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
  • Linen, towels and household items: Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in New Basford

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in New Basford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Laundry & Ironingin New Basford

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Everything we send is bedding and towels. Is that a problem?

No, and it is what most of this round carries. It does mean the weight is high and the drying is long, so a bag of towels comes back the next day rather than the same one, whatever time it was collected. Sheets and covers are returned folded flat unless you ask for them pressed, and every cover is turned the right way out and emptied of whatever has balled into the corners before anything is counted back to you.

Nobody is in during the day. How does collection actually work?

With a fixed slot and an agreed place, settled at booking rather than by text on the morning. There is no porch and no front garden on most of these houses, so a bag left out is a bag on a public footway. A key safe, a neighbour who is in, or a slot early or late enough to catch somebody at home are the three that work. In the mill flats somebody has to answer the door entry.

There are four of us sharing one machine. Is a collection actually worth it?

For the bedding and the towels, almost always. Those are the loads that block a single machine for a whole evening and then have nowhere to dry, and they are the ones a shared house argues about. Sending them out leaves the machine free for the clothes people need back quickly. Send one bag per person with a name on it and a note of what is needed first, and the return comes back the same way.

A bag has been sitting damp for the best part of a week. Is it salvageable?

Usually, if you say so at collection rather than letting us find out. Washing sealed wet in a plastic bag goes mildewed, the smell settles into the fibre and a cool wash simply moves it about. Told in advance, those items are run separately and hot where the labels allow it, and dried properly afterwards. What we cannot undo is mildew that has already marked a pale cotton, and we will say which items those are.

Do you cover the whole of New Basford?

Yes, all of NG7 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in New Basford?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in New Basford?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Straightforward, and we group New Basford with Hyson Green, Sherwood and Bulwell on the rota.
