Laundry & Ironing for Bulwell homes
Nowhere to dry is what sells this here. A terrace with a yard the size of a table, and a flat behind the shops with one window over a back roof, both mean washing dries in the room somebody sleeps in.
Who buys this in Bulwell divides by whether the house has anywhere to dry. On the estates toward Rise Park there is a garden and usually a machine, so a weekly slot sells on time rather than space: school uniform and workwear needed on the same day every week, and both noticed too late on a Sunday evening. Nearer the centre the reason is physical. A terrace yard is the size of a table and shaded by the entry wall, and a flat behind the shops may have one window over a back roof and no outside space at all, so washing dries indoors, in a room somebody sleeps in, for most of the year. Lets and shared houses buy counted linen instead of clothes.
Bulwell sits in NG6, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Bulwell Market, the tram terminus and Bulwell Forest, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Bulwell laundry & ironing jobs
The bags from the centre come with a smell rather than a stain, and it is worth naming. Washing dried slowly on an airer in a cold room stays damp long enough for bacteria to establish in the fibre, and what you get back is a musty note that reappears within hours of the next wash and strengthens as the garment warms against skin. It is not a detergent problem and more detergent makes it worse. It wants a hot wash, sometimes two, then a proper dry rather than a slow one. Towels show it first because they are thick, and the same rooms produce stiff towels as well.
How a Bulwell laundry & ironing job actually runs
The round works because the same streets get the same day, and the day is chosen around the street rather than the customer. Near the centre that means keeping clear of market set up, and it means a short stop: bags out, bags in, sheet signed, gone. On collection morning the entry behind a terrace is full of everybody's bins, so the exchange happens at the front door instead, which is one more reason a fixed slot beats a phone call. Flats behind the shops need a time window rather than a knock, because the street door sits between two shopfronts and the buzzer is frequently connected to nothing, so we message a window and you come down to it. On the estates there is a porch or a drive, and bags can be left in a nominated spot with nobody in. Hanging returns are the thing worth deciding in advance. A terrace with no hall has nowhere to put a rail of shirts on hangers, so most people here take a folded return and keep the hangers for the week they are actually needed.
Who books it here
Domestic cleaning across the estates, and small commercial premises around the market place and above the shops, which is unusual for a residential area.
We run Bulwell on the same round as New Basford, Aspley and Hucknall.
What we check on every Bulwell job
The two things that repeat in bags from these streets are drying smell and iron shine. The first is bacterial rather than dirt, and it comes off washing that took a day and a half to dry indoors: it needs a hot wash instead of more detergent, and sometimes two before it goes for good. The second is on school trousers and polyester uniform, where a hot iron on the face of the fabric has flattened the fibres into a shine that catches the light. Once that is there it is permanent, so uniform is pressed from the reverse and wool goes under a cloth. Workwear is kept apart from household washing at the machine, which is most of the point of sending it out, and anything carrying oil, solvent or paint is refused at the door and named rather than quietly attempted. Towels come back soft by cutting the detergent and leaving the conditioner out, not by adding more of either.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Linen, towels and household items: Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out
- Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection
- Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
- Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Bulwell
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Bulwell. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Our clothes smell musty even straight out of the machine. Will sending it out fix it?
Usually yes, and it stays fixed as long as the drying does. The smell is growth in the fibre from washing that took a day and a half to dry indoors, and once that is out and the items are dried properly hot it does not return on its own. Worth doing alongside it: run your machine empty on its hottest cycle and clean the door seal and the detergent drawer, because the drum holds the same thing.
The front door opens straight into the living room. How does collection work?
On the step, in under a minute, on the same weekday every week. Bags out, bags back, counted against the sheet at the door. You do not have to be in if you nominate somewhere safe and dry for them. A lidded box earns its place here more than it would at a house with a porch, because there is no sheltered spot at all between the pavement and your carpet.
We let two houses near the centre. Can you do the linen rather than the clothes?
Yes, as a counted rotation rather than a wash by the kilo. You hold enough sets per bed that one is on, one is in the cupboard and one is with us, and the count sheet says which is where. That is what stops a turnaround waiting on a machine. Short lets work differently, because linen inside a changeover is handled as part of that visit, so tell us at the start which of the two you have.
Can you collect if nobody is in?
On the estates yes, provided we agree a place that is dry and out of sight: a porch, behind a side gate, a lidded box by the door. On the terraces there is no sheltered spot at all between the pavement and the front door, so the practical answers are a neighbour, a box we leave with you, or a slot at an hour you are home. Whichever it is, the count sheet still goes in the bag.
Do you cover the whole of Bulwell?
Yes, all of NG6 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Bulwell?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Bulwell?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Market days fill the centre, and we group Bulwell with New Basford, Aspley and Hucknall on the rota.
