Laundry & Ironing for Carrington homes
The airing cupboard went when the hot water cylinder came out, and the yard line gets no winter sun, so washing dries on an airer in the room everybody sits in. That is what people here are paying to be rid of.
Drying is why this sells here, rather than convenience. A cottage this size has no utility room, no garage and nowhere warm to hang anything, and in most of them the airing cupboard went when the hot water cylinder came out for a combination boiler, so the one warm cupboard in the house has been a shelf of towels in a cold room ever since. The line outside stands in a yard with walls on three sides and the back of the next row behind it, which gives a few hours of sun in high summer and nothing worth having between October and March. What is left is an airer standing in the room the household actually sits in. Getting rid of that airer is what is being bought here.
Carrington sits in NG5, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are the Mansfield Road shops, Watcombe Circus and the City Hospital on Hucknall Road, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Carrington laundry & ironing jobs
A full load on an airer in a cool room takes a day and a half, and washing that takes that long begins to smell before it is dry. Towels show it first: they come off the airer stiff and turn sour again within hours of use. The other mark is one an iron then has to deal with. A shirt hung over a bar to dry sets a horizontal crease across the back and both sleeves exactly where the bar was, because it dried folded. Everything the machine spun out has to go somewhere as well, and in a small room with solid walls it goes into the air and then onto the coldest surface it can find.
How a Carrington laundry & ironing job actually runs
The round works street by street on a fixed day, and on these streets that is a practical necessity rather than a preference. There is nowhere for a vehicle to sit and wait, so collections happen in one pass along a row instead of as separate calls, and a bag that is not ready when we reach the door waits a week for the next one. Bin day is the one we plan around. With no side access the bins come through the house and stand out on the footway from early, and on that morning there is neither room to stop nor room to hand anything over, so each street gets a collection day that is not its bin day. The return wants a thought as well. Shirts and anything that creases badly come back hung and covered, and in a house where the front door opens more or less into the living room there is nowhere to stand a rail, so they go straight up the stairs to whichever room you tell us. Everything else comes back folded and bagged. We return what we took, counted against the sheet you kept a copy of at collection.
Who books it here
Check out cleans arrive singly and all year rather than in a summer block, because the renting is done by people working in the city and at the hospital up the road and a notice period lands whenever a job does. Around that sits fortnightly work in the owned houses, and deep cleans booked when a small property changes hands.
We run Carrington on the same round as Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields.
What we check on every Carrington job
Radiators are where drying indoors does its visible damage, and it comes back to us on the fabric. A radiator draws air through its fins at floor level and pushes it out of the top, dust and all, and a damp towel laid over that top edge is doing the work of a filter. It comes off with a grey line across it exactly where the metal was, and that is dirt out of the room rather than anything the wash left in it. On synthetics the second mark is worse and it is permanent: fabric held against a hot panel takes on a flattened sheen, and once the front of a shirt has that it does not come back. Neither is a laundry fault and neither is put right by washing it again, so what we do about it is simply not use a radiator. Items come back dried in moving air on a rack, or tumbled where the label allows, and anything marked otherwise is dried flat.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
- Linen, towels and household items: Pillows and single duvets where the drum size genuinely allows it, said plainly at booking
- Service wash, charged by weight: Folded and bagged by person or by room if you tell us how the house works
- Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Carrington
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Carrington. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
We work shifts and are never in at the same time twice.
Then the bag needs somewhere to live rather than a person to hand it over, and on these houses that is the awkward part, because there is no porch, no side passage and rarely a meter box with room in it. What works is a lidded box inside the yard gate on a day the gate is unbolted, a neighbour who is reliably in, or a key arrangement. We would sooner set that up at the start than knock and leave with nothing.
Do we have to sort it before collection?
No, the sorting happens at the machine. What is worth doing is splitting what you need in a hurry from what can wait a week, because a single bag holding Monday's uniform, the spare bed set and something new and dark is one bag with three different deadlines inside it. Two bags and a note on the top of one solves that. Anything that must not go in with the rest wants saying at the door rather than being left to be noticed.
Can you take a work uniform?
Workwear is kept apart from household washing and run hot, which is the main reason people send it out at all. The limit is what is on it. If your employer sets a laundering standard for a uniform then that standard decides where it goes rather than our preference, and anything carrying blood, body fluids, oil, solvent or paint is not household washing and gets declined with the reason given. Ask at booking rather than putting it in the bag and hoping.
Is there any point sending bed linen out when we could wash it here?
The washing was never the hard part of it. Getting a double duvet cover dry in a house with no cupboard and no line worth the name is, and ironing one is a floor space problem before it is anything else, because there is nowhere in a room this size to lay it out flat. That is why linen and towels make up most of what comes off these streets and shirts rather less of it than people assume.
Do you cover the whole of Carrington?
Yes, all of NG5 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Carrington?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Carrington?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Streets inside the old grid are short, narrow and parked both sides with no drives at all, so we stop where it is legal and carry in, and we group Carrington with Sherwood, Sherwood Rise and Forest Fields on the rota.
