Laundry & Ironing for Old Basford homes

Front doors open onto the pavement with no porch, so a returned bag cannot be left anywhere safe. Collections here run to a fixed slot with somebody in, or to a side gate and a porch on the semis.

Who buys this here splits three ways. Households in the semis, mostly uniform, towels and bedding on a weekly slot. Terraces where the real purchase is drying rather than washing, because a walled yard gets a few hours of sun at best and the alternative is an airer standing in a small room. And workwear off the trade units on the old works ground, which is a different proposition again and has a line in it we will not cross. The doorstep is the practical constraint for all three: with no porch and nowhere out of the weather, a collection is somebody opening a door at an agreed time, not a bag left waiting.

Old Basford sits in NG6, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are St Leodegarius church on Church Street, the David Lane tram stop and Valley Road, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Old Basford laundry & ironing jobs

Workwear from the units around here is the item we most often have to give an honest answer about. Cotton drill and poly cotton overalls carrying ordinary dirt wash perfectly well and come back fine. Overalls carrying oil, cutting fluid, solvent or brake dust do not, and the reason is not squeamishness: oil will not shift at a domestic wash temperature, it transfers onto everything else in the drum, and metal swarf in a turn up cuts other garments. Grit out of the cuffs and pockets of anything from a tyre bay goes straight into a machine seal. We check both at the door and say plainly which bags we can take.

How an Old Basford laundry & ironing job actually runs

The round only works if the day is genuinely fixed, and on these streets the day itself matters. Bin day takes the pavement and the parking, so collections are set away from it, and the middle of the day is easier than either end because the street is quieter and the van can stop for the two minutes a doorstep count takes. That count happens inside the door rather than out on the step. Standing in the rain writing down twenty items is how items get missed, so we come in far enough to put the sheet on something flat and then we are gone again. Hanging returns take up more room than people expect once they are through the door, so if there is nowhere obvious for a rail of shirts to go, say so and everything comes back folded instead. Landlords running two or three houses along here are better served by counted linen sets per property than by a household style bag, and it is worth deciding which of the two you want at the start rather than after the first changeover has gone wrong.

Who books it here

Regular fortnightly work in the owner occupied semis, and a steady run of landlord turnarounds on the terraces, a lot of which are rented rather than lived in by their owners. Deep cleans come third and cluster after a sale, when the carpet has come up in an empty house and nobody expected what was under it.

We run Old Basford on the same round as New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood.

What we check on every Old Basford job

Printed logos are the thing we look for before anything is pressed. School polo shirts and sweatshirts here carry a printed or heat applied badge, and workwear off the units carries the same with a company name on it. A hot iron put straight onto one of those lifts the print, cracks it, or transfers it onto the cover of the board, and none of that can be undone. So printed garments get pressed on the reverse or under a cloth, and they come out of the dryer sooner than a plain shirt would. Iron on name tapes behave the same way, and they are often the reason a school jumper has a shiny patch on the back of the neck. If you have a set of anything printed, say so at collection, because it is the difference between a garment lasting a school year and lasting a term.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Bags weighed at collection, with the weight and the price confirmed before anything is washed
  • Linen, towels and household items: School uniform on a fixed weekly slot through term time

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in Old Basford

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Old Basford. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Questions

Laundry & Ironingin Old Basford

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Nobody is in during the day. How does collection work?

A fixed evening or early slot when somebody is home, or a key safe if you already have one for a cleaner. What we will not do, on a street where the door opens straight onto the pavement, is leave a bag of your clothes on a step, and we would rather say that at the start than have you find an empty doorway. On the semis, a side gate and a porch make an unattended return workable.

We already have a machine. Is this worth paying for?

It depends what the actual problem is. If the machine is fine and the difficulty is getting things dry, then usually yes, because a walled yard in winter and an airer indoors are the two options here and both are slow. If the problem is ironing rather than washing, take the ironing on its own and keep the washing at home. Paying to have towels washed that would have dried on a line is the part people regret.

We let two terraces. Can you take the linen?

Yes, and it works far better as a counted rotation than as bags. You hold enough sets that one is on the bed, one is with us and one is in the cupboard, and every set is counted out and counted back against the property it belongs to. That is what stops linen drifting between houses, which is the usual way a landlord ends up short on a changeover day. Tell us the bed sizes at each address, because that decides how many sets you need to own.

Can you take overalls from the workshop?

Ordinary work clothing yes, kept apart from household washing, which is the main reason people send it out. What we cannot take is anything carrying oil, solvent, paint or workshop chemicals, and that is not a preference. Those need a launderer set up for them, and putting them through a domestic drum contaminates the next load through it. If a unit needs overalls done every week, an industrial workwear service is the right answer and we will say so.

Do you cover the whole of Old Basford?

Yes, all of NG6 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Old Basford?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Old Basford?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. On-street throughout, and the terraced rows have shared rear entries that are frequently gated with a lock nobody has the key to any more, and we group Old Basford with New Basford, Bulwell and Bestwood on the rota.
