Laundry & Ironing for Clifton Village homes
Bought here because there is nowhere to dry. A vented dryer needs a duct through a wall nobody may cut, so washing goes on racks and the moisture ends up on cold glass. Collections run to a fixed morning and an agreed handover spot.
What sells this here is drying rather than time saved. A vented tumble dryer needs a duct through an external wall, and cutting an opening in one of these elevations is not something anybody is going to get permission for, so households run a condenser, a heated airer, or nothing at all and hang the wash on racks in whichever room is warmest. All that water has to go somewhere. In a building with solid walls, small windows and very little through draught, it settles on the coldest surfaces in the room and sits there. Sending the wash out of the house takes the moisture out with it, which is a different reason for booking a laundry round from the one most people give.
Clifton Village sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are St Mary's church, Clifton Hall and its grounds, the green and the wooded escarpment, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Clifton Village laundry & ironing jobs
You can see where the drying happens without being told. Look along the bottom rail of the window in that room. Moisture off a loaded airer condenses on the coldest thing available, the glass, then runs down and pools in the corners of the sill where the paint has already opened at the joint. Old timber takes it in, and the bottom of the frame fails long before anything higher up the window. Where a secondary panel is fitted the water is trapped between the two instead and collects on the ledge inside. None of that is caused by laundry, and all of it is worse in a house drying several loads a week indoors from October onwards.
How a Clifton Village laundry & ironing job actually runs
Collections run to a fixed morning and an agreed handover point, and the second half of that matters more than it sounds. A bag of clean laundry cannot sit on a doorstep in a narrow street, and the van cannot always stop where the house is, so we settle at the outset where a bag lives when nobody answers: inside a porch, in an outbuilding, behind a garden door in the boundary wall, or with a neighbour who is reliably in. Nothing gets attached to the building to make that work, and we do not need it to. The route in is the other thing to settle. A hanging return needs a way through the door and somewhere to hang it at the far end, and a low door head in an old cottage will not take a full length cover carried at shoulder height, so shirts may come back folded flat instead if that is what genuinely fits the house. Counting in and counting out both happen at the door rather than in the vehicle, which costs a minute and settles in advance every argument that would otherwise start a fortnight later.
Who books it here
Settled owner occupiers who move rarely, so the work is a stable fortnightly round rather than a churn of one off jobs. Alongside it, an annual deep clean in houses where the fabric dictates the method, and carpet and upholstery work driven by what the mature trees put on the ground from September onward.
We run Clifton Village on the same round as Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington.
What we check on every Clifton Village job
The complaint we hear most is a smell that comes back rather than a mark that stays. A load dried indoors on a rack in a cool room can take two days to finish, and cotton left damp that long picks up an odour that has nothing to do with the wash and everything to do with the drying. It hides while the garment is cold and dry, then announces itself the moment somebody wears it or an iron goes over it, because heat and moisture bring it straight back. People answer that with more detergent and more conditioner, which makes it worse, since conditioner leaves a residue in the fibre that holds damp and gives the smell somewhere to live. What fixes it is a hot wash on towels and bedding, no conditioner at all, and drying quickly rather than slowly. That is the difference between a bag that leaves the house and the same bag dried in the back room.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Linen, towels and household items: Towels washed hot and kept separate from clothing
- Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
- Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
- Ironing: Steam on the reverse of anything that shines, and a pressing cloth on wool
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Clifton Village
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Clifton Village. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

We have no tumble dryer and cannot fit one. Does everything come back dry?
Yes, dried and folded, and that is really the point of the service for houses like these. The wash is dried off site where there is machine capacity and warm air, so nothing has to sit on a rack in your front room for two days putting moisture into the walls. Anything that must not go near a dryer is kept out of it and air dried flat instead, which is slower at our end rather than yours.
Can you iron bed linen? Ours is cotton and it never goes back on flat.
Yes, and it is priced separately from clothing because it is slow work rather than because it is difficult. Cotton sheets and duvet covers press properly while there is still a little moisture in them, which is exactly the state they are never in by the time they come off an indoor airer at home. They come back folded flat rather than on a hanger, so you need a shelf clear for them before the return.
Where will the bag go if we are out when you call?
Wherever we agreed at the start, and it needs to be somewhere dry and not visible from the pavement. A porch, a garden store, an unlocked outbuilding or a neighbour all work. What does not work is leaving it against a door in an open lane, so if none of those is available we hold the bag and bring it on the next round rather than leaving it out. Tell us if the arrangement changes, because the round runs on the same route every week.
Can bed linen go in the same collection as the clothes?
Yes, though bag it separately and say so on the sheet. Towels and bedding are washed hot and kept apart from clothing at the machine, so separating them at your end simply saves a step and keeps the count clean. Bedding is also the thing most worth sending out of a house like yours, because it is the bulkiest item to dry indoors and the one that puts the most moisture into a cold room when it is hung up to finish.
Do you cover the whole of Clifton Village?
Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Clifton Village?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Clifton Village?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. The lanes are narrow and walled, and most older houses have no drive, and we group Clifton Village with Clifton, Wilford and Ruddington on the rota.
