Laundry & Ironing for Clifton homes
A winter service here rather than a year round one. Almost every house has a line and a garden, so demand arrives in November when the airers go up in the living room and the towels start going over the radiators.
Who buys laundry here is not who buys it in the city centre, and the reason is that these houses have gardens. Nearly every property on the estate has a line and somewhere to hang it, so between April and September most households have no reason to send washing out at all. From November it changes completely. These houses were not built with a utility room, so the kitchen takes the machine and the drying both, and what actually happens is that airers go up in the living room and towels go over the radiators, which puts the water straight back into a house already struggling to lose it in winter. A weekly bag collected and returned dry is the alternative to that, and it is why demand here is seasonal rather than steady.
Clifton sits in NG11, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Clifton tram terminus, Clifton Grove and NTU Clifton campus, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Clifton laundry & ironing jobs
You can tell washing that has been dried indoors before the bag is open. Slow drying lets bacteria carry on working in a damp towel, and the result is a musty note that returns within a day of use however much conditioner has gone in, along with a faint grey cast on white cotton. It is not a stain and it does not answer to more detergent. What fixes it is a hotter wash than that load has been getting, a full spin before drying, and then drying quickly rather than over eight hours on an airer. Towels dried flat against a radiator also come out hard, because the pile is pressed and set while it dries.
How a Clifton laundry & ironing job actually runs
Collection and return run on a fixed weekday, which makes the price work and makes it easy to remember. The slot is a window rather than a time, and the arrangements that hold are somebody being in, or an agreed sheltered spot out of sight of the pavement. What does not work is leaving a bag out by the bins. A bag standing next to a wheelie bin on the morning the lorry comes through may not be there when we get to it. Returns take up more room than collections do. Ironing comes back on hangers under a cover and needs somewhere to hang immediately, and few of these halls are long enough to leave a rail standing in, so tell us where you want it put and it goes there rather than over the bannister. Counting happens at both ends, in front of you at collection where you are in, and the sheet comes back in the bag. Anything with no care label, anything with a broken zip and anything marked dry clean only is set aside and returned unwashed with a note rather than risked.
Who books it here
A large regular domestic round across the estate, with a separate seasonal spike in end of tenancy work near the NTU campus.
We run Clifton on the same round as Ruddington, West Bridgford and Chilwell.
What we check on every Clifton job
Sorting is where a service wash earns its money and it is done by hand at the bag rather than tipped straight into a drum. Whites, lights, darks and towels run as separate loads, every item is washed at the temperature printed on its own label instead of one setting for the lot, and school uniform gets checked for the polyester content that decides whether it can see a hot dryer. The things pulled out and set aside are always the same three: a shirt with a cracked button that will break up at speed, a fitted sheet with a small tear at the corner that will be twice the size afterwards, and a garment whose label has washed away to a blank strip. On a household that dries outside there is a fourth regular find, which is grass and pollen caught in the seams and the pockets after a summer on the line, and that wants shaking out before anything meets water or it becomes a green mark.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
- Linen, towels and household items: Towels washed hot and kept separate from clothing
- Linen, towels and household items: Pillows and single duvets where the drum size genuinely allows it, said plainly at booking
- Linen, towels and household items: Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Clifton property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What laundry & ironing costs in Clifton
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Clifton. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Our towels smell even after washing. Can that be sorted?
Usually, and it is a drying problem rather than a washing one. A towel that dries slowly indoors keeps a bacterial population alive in it, and the smell comes back the moment it gets damp again. We run towels hot and separately from clothing, spin them properly before they go near a dryer, and dry them fast. Two or three cycles like that normally clears it. If it does not, the machine at home is the next thing to look at.
Do you only take a full bag?
A service wash is charged by weight, so a light bag costs less than a heavy one, though there is a practical minimum below which a collection is not worth either of us making. Through winter most households here send one bag a week and that works out sensibly. Ironing is different, priced per item or by the hour, whichever suits what you actually have, so a dozen shirts on their own is a perfectly normal booking.
Can you take a duvet or pillows?
Some of them, and it depends entirely on the drum. Single duvets and standard pillows go through where the machine genuinely takes them, and we say yes or no at booking rather than finding out on the day. King and super king duvets do not, and neither does anything feather filled, because a duvet that cannot move inside a drum comes out soaked through the middle and takes days to dry properly. Those want a launderette with a large machine.
We let a property and need the linen turned round. Can you do that?
Yes, and it runs on counted sets rather than by weight. You want enough complete sets in circulation to cover back to back changeovers, so two per bed as a minimum and three where the bookings are tight, because the constraint is drying time rather than washing time. Sets come back complete and counted, so a missing pillowcase is spotted at the return rather than on the next changeover day. Tell us which weekday you need and we hold it.
Do you cover the whole of Clifton?
Yes, all of NG11 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Clifton?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Clifton?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Good throughout, with wide roads and generally available parking, and we group Clifton with Ruddington, West Bridgford and Chilwell on the rota.
