Laundry & Ironing for Compton Acres homes
Combi conversions took the cylinder out of the landing cupboard road by road, so the shelf that used to air the linen is a cold one now. Five beds made up and a wash from four wet rooms do the rest.
Two things decide who buys this here. The first is the size of the household wash. Five bedrooms with the beds genuinely made up produces linen at a rate a small house never does, and the towels come off three or four wet rooms rather than one. The second is what happened to the airing cupboard. These houses were built with a hot water cylinder in the cupboard on the landing, and the shelf above it aired whatever was stored there without anybody having to think about it. As the estate moved across to combi boilers, road after road, the cylinder came out and the cupboard went cold. Linen put away in there slightly damp never finishes drying, and that is the smell people describe as the wash not being clean.
Compton Acres sits in NG2, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. The local reference points are the tram stop on the Clifton line, the shopping centre parade and Becket School, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Compton Acres laundry & ironing jobs
Towels are the item that shows what the water is doing. The hardness is the same at every tap on the estate, and what it does to towelling is mechanical rather than dirty. Calcium binds with soap residue down in the loops and sets there, so the pile stops standing up, the towel feels boardy, and it takes up much less water than it once did, which reads as a weak wash. The instinct is more softener, and softener is a coating, so it makes the absorbency worse rather than better. What lifts it is less detergent, a hot wash with no softener in it, and a proper spin.
How a Compton Acres laundry & ironing job actually runs
The handover is the part that has to be designed rather than assumed, and on this estate the answer is the garage. There is no wall, gate or porch at the front, so a bag left by the door sits in full view of the road, which nobody wants twice. What works is a fixed weekly morning, a garage remote or a spare key logged and signed for, and the bag left inside the garage where it is dry and out of sight without anybody having to give us the run of the house. Everything is counted in against a sheet and counted back out against the same one, and in a household this size it returns bagged by room rather than in one load, because otherwise the sets are mixed up again by the following fortnight. Tell us what is in the bag that we cannot take, which is mostly dry clean only labels, anything with a broken zip or loose trim, and heavily soiled workwear. Term time is the busy half of the year and the slot is worth holding through it rather than booking week to week.
Who books it here
Regular domestic work in family houses, mostly fortnightly, moving to weekly where there is a dog and a lot of pale carpet. Deep cleans arrive in clusters, either before a sale or after a bathroom has been ripped out and replaced. Window work runs all year, because the rear elevations carry a great deal of glass.
We run Compton Acres on the same round as West Bridgford, Edwalton and Gamston.
What we check on every Compton Acres job
The winter version of the problem is always the same room. With nothing warm in the airing cupboard any more and a conservatory on the back of most of these houses, the airer goes out there around October, and a conservatory is the worst drying room in the building. It is glass on three sides with no heat in it overnight, so the water coming off the washing has nowhere to go and is on the panes and the frames by morning. The clothes are still cold and damp at lunchtime, and cotton that dries that slowly grows the bacteria that make the sour smell people blame on their machine. The other version is an airer in a bedroom behind a closed door, which puts the water out of a whole machine load into one small room overnight and turns up as mould on the window reveal by February. Work sent out comes back dry, and that is most of what is being bought.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
- Ironing: Collars, cuffs, plackets and yokes done individually rather than in one pass
- Service wash, charged by weight: Non-bio and fragrance-free detergent on request, at no extra cost
- Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
The cleaner who comes to your Compton Acres property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.
What laundry & ironing costs in Compton Acres
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Compton Acres. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can you take the linen off all five beds?
Yes, and it is worth agreeing how it comes back. In a house this size the sets get mixed up within a fortnight otherwise, so it returns bagged by room rather than in one heap, with the count sheet in with it. Bed linen is slow to iron and is priced apart from clothing, so tell us whether you want sheets pressed or folded flat. Most households here have them folded and the duvet covers pressed.
The airing cupboard is cold since the boiler was changed. Where should linen go now?
Anywhere dry, and the rule that matters is that it goes away bone dry rather than nearly. A cold cupboard with the door shut on it has no air moving through it, so anything slightly damp stays that way and picks up the musty smell within a week. Do not stack it tight against the cupboard walls, leave the door open a while after the heating has been on, and put the oldest set on top.
Nobody is home on collection day. How does that work?
Through the garage, on a fixed morning, with the access written down before we start rather than agreed over the phone every week. We would far rather hold a garage remote, logged and signed for, than have a bag standing on an open drive for half a day. The returned load goes back into the same place, and you get a message once it has been dropped, so nothing sits in a cold garage over a weekend.
Can you get grass off PE kit?
Usually, provided it has not been through a dryer first. Grass is a dye rather than soil, so heat sets it permanently, and a tumble dry after a poor wash is what turns a green knee into a permanent one. It is treated cold and worked before anything hot goes near it. Send it as soon as it comes off rather than at the end of the week, and tell us it is in there so it does not go straight into a load.
Do you cover the whole of Compton Acres?
Yes, all of NG2 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Compton Acres?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Compton Acres?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Short block paved drives open onto the pavement, so the van gets clear of the road easily, and we group Compton Acres with West Bridgford, Edwalton and Gamston on the rota.
