Laundry & Ironing for Lady Bay homes

Two days on an indoor airer puts a full load of water back into a house already carrying too much, and that, more than time, is why laundry goes out from these streets. The towels arrive telling us where they have been drying.

Nobody sends laundry out of these houses to save an hour. They send it out because there is nowhere to dry it. The machine is in the back addition, the yard is small, walled and shaded for most of the year, and what is left is an airer in the front room or on the landing. A full load put on an airer indoors gives up several litres of water over two days into a house that is already struggling to lose any, in winter, with the windows shut, and all of it lands on the coldest surface in the room. So the reason a collection round works on these streets is a building problem rather than a diary one, and the households using it hardest are the ones with children, towels and school uniform going through every week.

Lady Bay sits in NG2, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. The local reference points are Lady Bay Bridge, Trent Boulevard, the Poppy and Pint, the Hook and Adbolton Lane, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Lady Bay laundry & ironing jobs

The airer leaves its own mark and you can read it in the bag on collection. A towel folded over a rail dries from both ends inward and the fold line is the last part to go, so it stays damp for hours after the rest feels dry, and that is where the sour smell starts. It is not obvious while the towel is dry. It comes back the moment the towel is wet again, which is why people describe it as clean towels smelling bad. There is often a faint grey line along it as well. Washed hot and dried properly it goes, and it returns within a fortnight if the towels go back on the airer.

How a Lady Bay laundry & ironing job actually runs

The round works street by street on a fixed weekday, and on these streets one detail decides which day that can be. Bin day puts every household's container out onto a footway that is already narrow, with nowhere off the road to leave them, so the van cannot stand where it usually stands and the pavement is a poor place to be counting out a bag of laundry. We set the collection slot away from your collection day for that reason, and it is worth telling us which day yours is when you book. The doorstep itself is the other thing. Most of these houses have no porch and a step straight off the path, so a bag left out for us is a bag left in the rain, and a wet bag is a worse start than a missed week. We hand over at the door at an agreed time, or to a named neighbour if you are out, and the counting happens in the hall rather than on the step where the sheet gets wet. The return works the same way, on hangers under a cover or folded and bagged, whichever you asked for at collection.

Who books it here

Regular domestic cleaning takes most of the diary, in houses where people walk to the shops and the school rather than drive. Deep cleans come next, booked when the damp jobs have gone a season too long. Carpet and upholstery work follows, and here it is asked for as much for the smell as for the look of it.

We run Lady Bay on the same round as West Bridgford, The Meadows and Sneinton.

What we check on every Lady Bay job

Slow drying shows up again at the ironing board, and it is the reason an item count tells us more here than a weight does. Cotton that has hung damp over an airer rail for two days sets in the shape it hung in. A duvet cover arrives with a hard crease across the middle where it went over the rail, a shirt with a raised distortion at each shoulder from the hanger, and neither is a fresh crease that one hot pass takes out. The fibre has dried into that position, so it wants steam and dwell before the iron will move it at all, and those items take two or three times as long as the same thing off a line or out of a dryer. If most of a bag has come off an airer, say so at collection. It changes whether we quote you by the hour or by the item, and it stops the return day slipping.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
  • Linen, towels and household items: School uniform on a fixed weekly slot through term time
  • Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
  • Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

The cleaner who comes to your Lady Bay property is directly employed and vetted by us rather than subcontracted, and the questions that come up before a first booking are answered on the FAQ page. If you are not certain this is the right service, the services hub compares all 14.

What laundry & ironing costs in Lady Bay

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Lady Bay. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Why do our towels smell after two days?

Because they never finished drying in the first place. Slow drying at room temperature in humid air leaves enough moisture in the pile for bacteria to carry on working, and what they produce is dormant while the towel is dry and obvious the second it is wet. A hot wash and proper drying clears it. Keeping it clear means those towels not going back on an indoor airer, which in most houses here means sending them out or drying them somewhere else.

Do you take bed linen as well as clothes?

Yes, and in these houses it is often the more useful half of the bag. A double duvet cover occupies an entire airer and takes two days on it, which is exactly the load a small house cannot absorb. Sheets and covers go out with everything else and come back pressed or folded flat, whichever you say at collection. Duvets themselves are a different matter, and most need a drum larger than a domestic machine, so those get named rather than taken.

We are out all day. How does collection work if nobody is in?

A named neighbour is the arrangement that works best on these streets, and most people already have one for parcels. Failing that we take a fixed early or late slot on the round and hold it, because a bag on an open step in this weather is not something we will leave for two hours. What we will not do is take an unlisted bag off a doorstep, because the count at the door is the thing that protects both of us later.

Could we just use a launderette instead?

For a one off big item, often yes, and we will say so rather than take the booking. A large drum handles a double duvet and a full set of bedding in one go, which a domestic machine cannot. Where the collection round earns its place is the repeating weekly load, because the thing you are actually buying is not the wash. It is not having eight kilos of wet washing to dry in a house that cannot lose the moisture.

Do you cover the whole of Lady Bay?

Yes, all of NG2 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Lady Bay?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Lady Bay?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. One way in over the bridge and a grid that leads nowhere else, so the streets stay quiet and a space is usually there, and we group Lady Bay with West Bridgford, The Meadows and Sneinton on the rota.
