Laundry & Ironing for Bingham homes
A combi boiler means no cylinder and no airing cupboard, which is most of the newer housing here. Add three showers and the towel weight doubles. The older houses have the cupboard on the landing and a kitchen too small for a machine.
What decides who buys this here is where a household is supposed to dry and finish washing. A lot of the newer housing runs on a combi boiler, which means there is no hot water cylinder, and no cylinder means no airing cupboard. The larger plots that do have a cylinder have a heavily insulated unvented one, which by design gives off almost no heat, so that cupboard is not an airing cupboard either. The same houses have two or three shower rooms feeding a very heavy towel wash into a small garden. Behind the Market Place the position reverses: a warm slatted cylinder cupboard on the landing and a line in the yard, and a kitchen with no room for a machine and a dryer both.
Bingham sits in NG13, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. The local reference points are the Market Place and its buttercross, St Mary and All Saints' Church, and Bingham Arena, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Bingham laundry & ironing jobs
The two halves fill a bag differently and it changes which way the work should be priced. A wash out of a new house is towels, bedding and sportswear, which is heavy and wet, quick to handle and almost none of it wants ironing. A wash out of one of the older houses tends toward shirts, blouses and cotton bed linen, which weighs very little and takes a long time at the board. Weighed on the same scale the heavier bag is the quicker one and the light one is the evening's work. That is why the same round quotes some work by weight and some by the hour or the item.
How a Bingham laundry & ironing job actually runs
The round works a fixed day for the same streets, so the question is where a bag can safely wait. Very few of the newer plots have a porch, and a bag of washing left in the open on a wet morning is worse than no collection, so the usual answer is the garage, the bin store beside the drive or a nominated place agreed once. In the older streets the door opens onto the pavement, so nothing can wait outside and the slot has to land when somebody is in, or run on a key arrangement recorded first. Returns need thinking about too: anything pressed travels hung rather than folded and needs a rail or a door to go on at your end, which is easier in a house with a landing than in one where the front door opens into the room. Everything is counted onto a sheet at the door with a copy left with you, and existing marks, loose buttons and bobbling get noted at the same moment. For the let plots, settle how many sets each bed needs at the outset, because a rotation only works when there is a spare in it.
Who books it here
Handover and snagging cleans on the new plots, which is why after builders work sits alongside the regular rounds here rather than behind them. Deep cleans booked through a house's first winter, when the fabric is still drying and it shows. Fortnightly domestic work in the finished houses, weekly where the whole ground floor is hard flooring.
We run Bingham on the same round as Radcliffe on Trent, Cotgrave and Burton Joyce.
What we check on every Bingham job
An airing cupboard on the landing of one of the older houses is doing something specific, and much of the newer housing has nothing equivalent. A vented copper cylinder gives off real heat continuously, and the slatted shelves above it let that heat move up through what is stacked on them, so linen put away just short of dry finishes there. What it cannot do is dry something wet, and that is where stale smelling bedding comes from: a load that went in damp, sat warm and still, and grew what warmth and moisture together grow. The cupboards in the newer houses look the same and are not. Where there is a cylinder at all it is an unvented one under thick sprayed insulation, deliberately built to lose nothing to the room, so the cupboard around it is at room temperature and is storage rather than airing. Everything we return comes back dry through, because in most of these houses there is nowhere left to finish it.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection
- Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
- Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
- Ironing: Shirts, blouses, trousers, dresses, school uniform and workwear
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Bingham
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Bingham. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
We have a combi and nowhere warm to put damp washing. Is that what the service is for?
It is one of the two common reasons here, the other being time. Without a cylinder cupboard the options are a dryer, which the towel load makes expensive, or an airer standing in a room somebody is trying to live in. Sending the wash out means it comes back dry and folded, and the moisture never enters the house at all. Say if you want it back folded by person or by room, because that is decided at the fold and not afterwards.
Ours is an older house with an airing cupboard. Why would we need collecting?
Generally for the ironing rather than the washing. A cylinder cupboard is a good place to finish linen and a poor place to store anything put away damp, which is where stale smelling bedding comes from. Most people in the older streets who use the round send shirts and bed linen and keep the everyday wash at home, which is charged by the hour or by the piece rather than by weight, since ten shirts weigh next to nothing and take an evening.
We let a house on one of the estates. Should linen go through the round or stay with the changeover?
Keep it on the round, and hold a spare rotation at the property. A turnaround only works if the beds can be dressed from a cupboard of clean sets while the dirty ones go out in the van, and a machine cycle plus drying will not fit in the gap between one guest leaving and the next arriving. Decide the number of rotations per bed at the start. The spare one is what saves the week something is spoiled.
Can school uniform go on a standing weekly collection during term?
It is one of the things the arrangement suits best, along with workwear. Both come back into use on a set morning, and neither survives being remembered late on a Sunday. The day is agreed once when term starts instead of booked each week. Send uniform in a bag of its own with a note if it has to return ahead of the rest, and point out any mark at collection, because a stain already through a dryer at home is usually beyond saving.
Do you cover the whole of Bingham?
Yes, all of NG13 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Bingham?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Bingham?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. On the newer estates the road is often unadopted and missing from a satnav, so a plot number and a description of the house find us the door faster than a postcode, and we group Bingham with Radcliffe on Trent, Cotgrave and Burton Joyce on the rota.
