Laundry & Ironing for Gamston homes

Households rather than lets. Two working parents, school uniform, and five beds in three sizes changed on the same weekend. They already own a machine, so what they are buying is the ironing and the drying.

This is a household service here rather than a linen contract. The few lets on the estate are family houses let whole, so the regular customers are working parents with school age children who already have a machine and a condensing dryer in the utility room and no shortage of capacity. What they run out of is time and drying, in that order. The weekly bag is uniform, shirts, sports kit and towels, and the item that actually drives the booking is bed linen, because a four bedroom house here changes five beds in three different sizes on the same weekend and a domestic drum takes one king size set at a time if it takes it at all.

Gamston sits in NG2, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. The local reference points are Gamston District Centre, Lings Bar Hospital, the Grantham Canal and Nottingham City Airport at Tollerton, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on Gamston laundry & ironing jobs

The airing cupboard on the landing is not what it used to be in these houses. It was built around a hot water cylinder with a slatted shelf above it, and once a household moved to a combi boiler the cylinder came out and the space became a shelved cupboard with no heat in it whatsoever. That removes the one place a house like this could air and finish linen that is nearly dry, which is why the ironing pile and the drying pile are the same problem here. Anything that goes back on those shelves slightly damp stays damp, and it is why towels that smelled fine on Sunday smell stale by Thursday.

How a Gamston laundry & ironing job actually runs

Collection and return has to be reliable, and on this estate it is once two things are agreed. First, where the bag sits. Nobody is in on a weekday, so it goes in the porch, inside the garage with the door left on the latch, or in a lidded box by the front door, and it comes back to the same spot. A key safe works for the households that already have one, and finished laundry goes back inside the house rather than being left out in it. Second, the day. Bins go out on these closes the night before, and on collection morning the road narrows to a single track with wheelie bins along both verges, so the round avoids that morning where it can. The drives do the rest of the work: the van pulls in, the bag goes straight in the back and nothing is carried past anybody else's door. We run a fixed weekly slot and text the night before, and everything is counted in and counted back out, so a missing sock is a question with an answer rather than an argument. Hangers come back under a cover and folded items come back flat.

Who books it here

Regular domestic work in the family houses, commercial cleaning for the practices and offices around the district centre, and post-construction work that has not stopped since the estate began. New build plots, extensions and garage conversions all keep arriving, and construction dust needs different equipment from anything a weekly visit carries.

We run Gamston on the same round as West Bridgford, Edwalton and Colwick.

What we check on every Gamston job

School uniform is the item that shows whether a wash was thought about at all. Most of it is a polyester cotton mix, and polyester takes up oil rather than water, so a grey collar on a school shirt is body oil sitting in the fibre and it will not come out at forty degrees however many times it goes round. Washed too hot instead, that same shirt takes a permanent shine along the collar and at the elbows where the fibre has been flattened under an iron set for cotton. So collars and cuffs are pre treated before the wash, the temperature follows the label rather than the load, and the iron is set for the mix. The other item that repays attention is a sweatshirt with a printed crest, which goes in inside out and is never pressed on the print, because a hot plate takes a transfer like that off in a single pass and there is no putting it back.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Sorted by colour and fabric, so whites, lights, darks and towels run separately
  • Linen, towels and household items: Bed linen sets for lets, HMOs and holiday flats, cycled on a counted rotation
  • Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection
  • Linen, towels and household items: Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in Gamston

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in Gamston. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Questions

Laundry & Ironingin Gamston

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

Can you take the bed linen as well as the clothes?

Yes, and it is worth keeping it as its own bag. Linen washes hot and separately from clothing, and duvet covers are slow work, so they are priced apart from a shirt rather than counted the same way. The practical tip in a house running several bed sizes is to write the room on a tag inside the bag, because a double cover and a king cover look identical folded and otherwise come back onto the wrong bed.

Is there anything you will not take?

Dry clean only labels, tailoring and structured jackets, silk and hand wash knitwear, and anything with a broken zip, a loose button or an existing tear, because a machine turns every one of those into a bigger problem than it started as. Heavily soiled workwear carrying oil or solvent is out as well. If the label has washed off entirely we will not guess a temperature, so either leave that item out or tell us what it is.

How is a service wash priced, and how do I know what my bag weighs?

By weight, and the bag is weighed in front of you at collection or weighed and confirmed by message before anything is washed, so nothing is a surprise when it comes back. Ironing is separate and goes by the item or by the hour, whichever works out lower for what you actually have in there. Bulky items such as duvet covers and towels are worth mentioning when you book, because they change the weight far more than clothing does.

Can you wash the duvets and pillows too?

Pillows and single duvets yes, where the drum is big enough to let them move properly, which is what actually gets them clean and lets them dry through. King and super king duvets, and feather duvets of any size, we do not take, and a domestic machine at home should not take them either, because a soaked feather duvet that has not dried right through goes mouldy inside where you cannot see it. Those want a launderer with a large machine.

Do you cover the whole of Gamston?

Yes, all of NG2 and the surrounding streets, under Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in Gamston?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Gamston?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Nearly every house has a drive and a garage, so parking is the least of it here, and we group Gamston with West Bridgford, Edwalton and Colwick on the rota.
