Laundry & Ironing for The Meadows homes

A galley kitchen holds a washing machine and nothing else, and the yards face a parking court. What households here buy is the drying and the pressing rather than the washing, collected and returned at an agreed door and an agreed time.

Look at where a washing machine goes in one of these kitchens and the demand explains itself. The run is short, the machine sits under it, and there is no second space beside it for a dryer without giving up the only cupboard in the room. Outside there is a small yard facing a parking court, or on the walkway side no private outside space at all, and in the flats near Bridgeway neither of those. So what households here buy is not the washing, which they can do perfectly well themselves. It is the drying and the pressing, and it is bed linen most of all, since a double duvet cover has to be laid out and turned and there is no surface in these houses long enough to do it on.

The Meadows sits in NG2, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Victoria Embankment, the Bridgeway Centre, Queen's Walk, Meadow Lane and the suspension bridge, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.

What we run into on The Meadows laundry & ironing jobs

Bags from this estate weigh more than they look, because of what is in them. Clothes get washed at home. What comes out to us is towels and bedding, the items a household with no dryer and a small yard cannot get dry in a day, and those are the heaviest things in any wash. A service wash charged by weight is therefore small in volume and dense. It is worth knowing too that a bag packed damp gets heavier and starts to smell within a day, so if washing has been sitting wet since the machine finished, say so at collection. It changes the sort and the temperature.

How a The Meadows laundry & ironing job actually runs

Collection and return is the part to get right here, because a bag of laundry on a doorstep is a bag of laundry on a public footpath. The walkway frontages have no porch, no gate and no recess to stand anything in, and the whole estate walks past. So we work to an agreed time rather than a window, at whichever door suits you, and where that cannot be arranged we would rather use a key arrangement than leave anything standing outside. In the flats and maisonettes near Bridgeway the handover happens at the entrance rather than at the flat door, unless somebody is in to answer the entry phone. The other half of it is the schedule. A fixed weekly slot beats an on demand call every time on this estate, because the driver is already parking in the court and walking round, and a round that stops at three or four properties in the same block on one morning keeps the carrying sensible. For a let or a short let a counted rotation of linen sets works better again, since a clean set arrives as the used one leaves and nothing waits anywhere for anybody.

Who books it here

Regular domestic cleaning across the estate, a steady run of end of tenancy work because a large share of the stock is let, and window cleaning booked more often than the size of the houses would suggest, since ground floor glass sits at eye level on the walkways everybody uses to get home.

We run The Meadows on the same round as Nottingham City Centre, Wilford and West Bridgford.

What we check on every The Meadows job

How things come back is decided by the walk from the van. On a street with a drive, shirts and dresses go back on hangers under a cover, straight from the vehicle to a rail in the hall, and that is the better finish. Along a walkway on the wrong side of a block in a wind off the river, a covered rail behaves like a sail, and the cover ends up round the shoulders of whatever it was protecting. So the default here is folded flat in a lined bag with the count sheet on top, and hangers only where somebody is in to take them straight through a door. Shirts folded properly out of a press keep the collar and the front, which is what anybody looks at. The walk decides quantity too. Two manageable bags beat one that has to be dragged, so a large wash comes back split rather than as one load that arrives looking as though it was set down on the way.

What the laundry & ironing covers

A sample of what is included

  • Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
  • Ironing: Steam on the reverse of anything that shines, and a pressing cloth on wool
  • Linen, towels and household items: Workwear kept apart from household washing, which is the whole point of sending it out
  • Service wash, charged by weight: An itemised count sheet in the bag, matching the one taken at collection

That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.

What laundry & ironing costs in The Meadows

Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.

£2 to £4

Typical cost in The Meadows. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.

PropertyTypical cost
Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg£2 to £4
Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25
Washed, dried and ironed, per kg£6.50 to £9
Ironing only, per kg£5.50 to £9
Ironing, per hour£14 to £20
Shirt, washed and ironed£1.50 to £3

A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.

Priced separately

ExtraTypical cost
Duvet, single£14 to £22
Duvet, double£18 to £27
Duvet, king or super king£25 to £32
Collection and return, per orderFree to £5

These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.

Questions

Laundry & Ironingin The Meadows

Ring us on 07438 843980, or see the full service page.

We already own a machine. Is this worth paying for?

Only if drying and pressing are the parts actually costing you something. A household with a machine and no dryer loses the airing cupboard, the radiators and half the upstairs to wet washing every week, and the culprit is nearly always bedding rather than clothes. Sending the sheets and the towels out and keeping the rest at home is the version most people here settle on, and it is a smaller bag than they expect it to be.

Can you take our duvet as well?

Some of them. A single duvet or a pillow goes in where the drum size genuinely allows it, and we say plainly at booking whether yours does. King and super king duvets do not, and neither do feather items of any size, because those need a launderer with a much larger machine and a proper drying cabinet. Sending one to the wrong place is how a duvet comes back with the filling gathered in a lump at one end.

Nobody is in during the day. How does the return work?

By arrangement rather than by chance. Some households leave a key with us, signed for and logged against a reference rather than an address, and the bags go inside the door. Others move the return to an evening or a Saturday slot, which is straightforward as long as it is fixed rather than shifting week to week. What we will not do is leave laundry on a walkway step, or with a neighbour who has not agreed to it, because both of those end badly.

We let the house out. Can you handle the linen?

Yes, on a counted rotation rather than bag by bag. Sets are counted out and counted back with a sheet in the bag, kept together so the property always has a complete change, and towels run separately and hot. It works best when the number of sets is one more than the property actually needs, so there is always a clean one on the shelf when a changeover runs late. Damaged items get pulled out and shown to you rather than quietly returned in the pile.

Do you cover the whole of The Meadows?

Yes, all of NG2 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.

How much does laundry & ironing cost in The Meadows?

The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.

How soon can you start laundry & ironing in The Meadows?

Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. Park in the rear court and walk round, because the road the address belongs to and the door you knock on are often on opposite sides of the block, and we group The Meadows with Nottingham City Centre, Wilford and West Bridgford on the rota.
