Laundry & Ironing for Strelley homes
Cottage kitchens have nowhere to plumb a machine and no wall a drier can vent through, so the village half of the round is households with no way to wash and dry at home rather than households short of time.
The village half of this round is not people short of time. A cottage kitchen has nowhere sensible to plumb a machine, and putting a vented drier through the wall of a listed building is not something anybody is going to be given permission for, so drying happens indoors on an airer, in a room with a solid floor and a fire that is not lit during the day. That is precisely the situation the service exists for. The estate is a different customer altogether: households where the machine is fine and the line down the garden is fine, and the week has stopped fitting round either of them. School uniform and bedding are what those bags mostly hold, and both want a fixed day rather than a phone call.
Strelley sits in NG8, under Nottingham City Council. The local reference points are Strelley Hall, All Saints Church, the Asda on Strelley Road and Nottingham Business Park, which is usually enough for us to find a property without a postcode lookup.
What we run into on Strelley laundry & ironing jobs
Washing out of a house heated by an open fire or a burner arrives with woodsmoke in it, and it behaves differently from a smell sitting on the surface. Smoke particulate is fine and oily, it goes into wool and heavy cotton rather than onto them, and a thirty degree wash lifts none of it, which is how a load comes back clean and smelling exactly as it went in. It gets a longer cycle at the warmest temperature the label allows, an extra rinse, and it goes nowhere near the dryer until somebody has checked it, because heat fixes whatever is left. It is also kept off other households' loads, since smoke transfers between garments in a drum.
How a Strelley laundry & ironing job actually runs
The round covers both halves of the area on the same day and handles them completely differently. On the estate a bag can be left in a porch, inside an unlocked side gate or with a nominated neighbour, and that works because there is somewhere off the pavement to put it. What we plan around instead is the bin day: on collection mornings the fronts of these streets are lined with wheelie bins and the van cannot get near a kerb, so the round avoids that day rather than fighting it. In the village nothing gets left anywhere. The lane has no footway, a bag on a doorstep sits in the damp and in everybody's way, so collection and return are both handed over at an agreed time. Hanging returns want thinking about before the first one arrives, because shirts come back on hangers under a cover and a cottage hallway with a low ceiling has nowhere to put them. Everything is counted onto a sheet at the door, you keep a copy, and anything already stained, holed or missing a button is written down before it leaves the house.
Who books it here
Regular domestic rounds across the estate, tenancy turnarounds on the rented stock arriving singly through the year, and carpet extraction booked more often than in most places we cover, because the ground floors are solid concrete. The village produces a shorter, slower list: cottage deep cleans, and commercial work in the offices fitted into the hall.
We run Strelley on the same round as Bilborough, Aspley and Wollaton.
What we check on every Strelley job
Two things turn up on the board here that do not turn up everywhere. The first comes off the village side: households that have had the same bed linen for decades, flat cotton and linen sheets rather than fitted ones, stored folded in the same creases year after year. Fibre pressed along one line for that long is thin along it, and ironing straight down an existing crease at full heat is how a sheet finally splits. Those get a lower temperature, steam doing the work instead of weight, and folding on a different line when they go back. The second comes off the estate: school polo shirts and sweatshirts carrying a printed or heat transferred badge, which will lift, crack or go shiny if an iron passes over it. Those are pressed on the reverse with a cloth over the badge, and the sweatshirts are folded rather than hung so the print is not sat against a hanger.
What the laundry & ironing covers
A sample of what is included
- Service wash, charged by weight: Folded and bagged by person or by room if you tell us how the house works
- Service wash, charged by weight: Tumble dried or air dried, with anything that shrinks kept out of the dryer
- Service wash, charged by weight: Non-bio and fragrance-free detergent on request, at no extra cost
- Service wash, charged by weight: Washed at the temperature on the care label, not one temperature for everything
That is a sample rather than the whole list. The full laundry & ironing page sets out every section of the scope, what is deliberately excluded and why, how long it takes on each property size, and what tends to go wrong.
What laundry & ironing costs in Strelley
Typical UK rates. Washing is priced by weight, ironing by item or by hour, duvets individually. Our own cost research puts the Midlands at around the UK average to 10% below it, so Nottingham sits in the lower half of every range on this page.
£2 to £4
Typical cost in Strelley. A written fixed price for your property takes about a minute: ask for one.
| Property | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Service wash, washed, dried and folded, per kg | £2 to £4 |
| Minimum load, or a minimum charge instead | 5 to 8kg, or £15 to £25 |
| Washed, dried and ironed, per kg | £6.50 to £9 |
| Ironing only, per kg | £5.50 to £9 |
| Ironing, per hour | £14 to £20 |
| Shirt, washed and ironed | £1.50 to £3 |
A 6kg bag works out at £12 to £24 on the per kg rate but is usually billed at the £15 to £25 minimum, so that is the realistic floor for a single load. Ironing is the expensive half: washed, dried and ironed runs £6.50 to £9 per kg against £2 to £4 for washing alone, which is why sending shirts priced by the item often works out cheaper than sending a whole bag ironed.
Priced separately
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Duvet, single | £14 to £22 |
| Duvet, double | £18 to £27 |
| Duvet, king or super king | £25 to £32 |
| Collection and return, per order | Free to £5 |
These are typical Nottingham market ranges, not our price list. We quote a fixed price in writing for your property before anything starts, because a number produced from a bedroom count alone has priced an average property rather than yours. The figures above come from our own UK cost research, set out in full in this guide.
Can you get the smoke smell out?
Usually most of it, and we will not promise all of it. Woodsmoke absorbs into fibre rather than resting on top, so it wants a longer wash at the warmest temperature the label allows and then real drying, occasionally twice. What does not work is fragrance laid over the top, which lasts about a week and then leaves you with two smells instead of one. Wool and unlined coats hold it longest.
There is nowhere to leave a bag out at the cottage.
Then it is a handover, and that is why the round runs to a fixed slot. Nothing gets left on a lane with no footway, where it sits in the damp and in everybody's way, so we agree a time you are in for the collection and the same again for the return. If there is a key safe or an outbuilding we can use, that works too. Tell us which at the start rather than on the first wet morning.
Can you iron old linen sheets without wrecking them?
Yes, at a lower temperature than the fibre would normally take, and with steam doing the work rather than weight. The risk with an old sheet is not scorching, it is the fold: material that has sat in the same crease in an airing cupboard for years has thinned along that line, and pressing hard down it is what finishes it off. We fold on a different line when it comes back, which is worth doing at home as well.
Which day does the round come, and what happens if we miss it?
You get a fixed weekly slot on the same day every week, because that is what keeps the price sensible and the van already on your street. A missed week is not a problem. A bag that goes out on a different day sometimes is, since the round is routed street by street. If you need something back faster than the usual turnaround, say so at collection rather than afterwards, and we will tell you honestly whether the drying allows it.
Do you cover the whole of Strelley?
Yes, all of NG8 and the surrounding streets, under Nottingham City Council. We are based in New Basford, NG7, and there is no travel charge to any part of our area.
How much does laundry & ironing cost in Strelley?
The same as anywhere else on our patch, because we do not price by postcode. What moves the number for this service is the weight rather than the item count, whether ironing is included or just washing, and how often we collect. Tell us that and you get a fixed price in writing rather than a range.
How soon can you start laundry & ironing in Strelley?
Within a few days to set up a collection day, and after that it runs to the same day each week. The estate half is easy: wide roads, verges, garage courts behind the terraces and off-street space at many properties, and we group Strelley with Bilborough, Aspley and Wollaton on the rota.
